I'm getting a headstart on this. This series is basically a period piece, loosely based on the exploits of a real person. Here's the Wikipedia link to the main protagonist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C5%8Dj%C5%8D_Tokiyuki My only critique to the series trailer is that I wish they would have used honorifics, like Viz's translation of the manga does. Also, since this is based on historical accounts, I will be writing full names of characters in the Japanese fashion (surname first). |

Episode 1 The first episode starts with Tokiyuki doing all he can to skip out on archery practice. But then Ashikaga Takauji betrays Tokiyuki's father and slaughters everyone in Kamakura. Tokiyuki only escapes thanks to the help of Suwa Yorishige, a priest who proclaims that he can see into the future, and his assistant Shizuku. The art style is reminiscent of 80's and 90's anime, and even the opening and ending sequences have karaoke fonts in that style as well. Here's the Wikipedia article for Takauji: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashikaga_Takauji And even though it's basically a stub, there's a short page for Yorishige as well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suwa_Yorishige |

Episode 1 And thus, Tokiyuki begins his life living as Solid Snake as all he is good at is hide-and-seek, and this guy is supposed to be the heir to the Kamakura Shogunate. Things start out being another peaceful day, but everything changed with the siege of Kamakura on July 1, 1333 as everybody was wiped out by the Ashikaga clan, all while Tokiyuki's father commits suicide. Tokiyuki ended up escaping thanks to Yorishiga, who saw this coming. While Tokiyuki is not good at fighting, his elusiveness is quite the asset seeing that he had soldiers killing each other with friendly fire. An interesting take on the feudal era genre, and it will be interesting to see how Tokiyuki adjusts to life as a refugee in the Suwa land. The theme songs are very catchy, and it evokes the feel that this isn't exactly the kind of history read from a Japanese textbook. |

This seems kind of...over animated. It would also be better without the absurdist parts and over the top characters. I'm not sure why the more historical fiction based anime end up having weird bits of absurdism thrown in. Can't they just tell a serious story? |

Wow, I was expecting this to be an average adaptation but this is great. I like the art style and the animation changes a bit to fit the scene; it's really nice. There is quite a bit of humor in the beginning; the main cast are all children after all. The manga did a good job of balancing it out and hopefully the anime does the same. |

Episode 2 Seeing that it was Tokiyuki's uncle Godaiin who who led the attack that and betrayed the clan that naturally it hits Toshiyuki hard seeing that his father died by his hands. So with Tokiyuki a refugee, he's introduced to the rest of his foster family in Kojiro, Shizuku, and Ayano. So to get revenge on Godaiin, Tokiyuki lures him to an open field where Kojiro and Ayano are waiting for him. It was a tough battle seeing that this is a bunch of kids going up against an adult, but they defeat him, and Tokiyuki beheads him to take revenge. While it was a straight-up story here without anything complicated, the visuals and stuff are nicely done. |

Episode 2 Not even family can be trusted in this tumultuous betrayal, as Tokiyuki learns that his brother Kunitoki was sold out by their uncle Godaiin Muneshige and was beheaded. But Muneshige is at his wit's end, which gives Tokiyuki the opportunity to avenge his brother. Yorishige introduces Tokiyuki to two new allies, Nezu Kojiro and Mochizuki Ayako, and they lure Muneshige into an open field. The element of surprise is lost, but soon Muneshige becomes exhausted as Tokiyuki keeps dodging his attacks. Kojiro and Ayako rejoin the fight, and Tokiyuki soon cuts off his uncle's head. |

@SparkyBob Exactly....the contrast between raping and murdering kids and the weird happy go lucky priest is just odd. Just like I said in my first post, why can't any of these historical anime just tell a serious story? Vinland Saga seems to be the exception to the rule. |

@HOOfan_1 I think the intent is: If you want a serious story about stuff that actually happened, go read a history book or watch a documentary. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C5%8Dj%C5%8D_Tokiyuki |

The production alone makes this a must watch in my opinion. I was never the biggest fan of the manga but this adaptation is really stunning to watch so far. It's just come out that Shueisha has ordered emergency reprints of all available volumes so this is obviously hitting with the Japanese audience. |

Episode 3 Life in the Suwa domain begins as he undergoes training and gets to know his comrades better seeing that Kojiro, Ayano, and Shizuku are now his retainers. The three of them go on a hunt and run into a giant boar whose hide is too thick. But Tokiyuki uses his elusiveness to get it to fall onto a spiky rock. After that, they take a dip in the hot springs and form a team called the Elusive Warriors, and while they were relaxing, Yorishige eats their entire catch. Things can get pretty out of hand in Suwa, but Tokiyuki has some trusty friends now. |

Episode 3 Tokiyuki and the others arrive at Suwa Grand Shrine, but he's still not convinced that Yorishige is a suitable teacher. Yorishige manages to win Tokiyuki over by showing him his followers. Then he has Tokiyuki get to know the other kids better, and they end up going hunting and run into a monstrous boar. Tokiyuki evades the boar while the others set things up for the beast to crash into a tree and fall off a cliff onto a pointy rock, impaling it. Tokiyuki, Shizuku, Ayako, and Kojiro form a team called the Elusive Warriors, but after they relax in a hot spring, Yorishige ends up eating the huge boar by himself. Meanwhile, it looks like a very perceptive archer is bearing down on Suwa Grand Shrine. |

Episode 4 Here comes Sadamune, who is out to make sure the Hojo clan is gone for good, and his eyes are not so easy to deceive. He can see that Suwa has hidden soldiers ready to kill, and not to mention his archery skills are deadly as he manages to clip Sanae in the ear even though she's so far back. Seeing that Sadamune is hellbent on searching the Suwa territory that Yorishige makes a bet in that if nobody can beat him in an archery contest, he can freely search the place, and he has Tokiyuki taking up his challenge. Using his elusiveness, Sadamune misses aiming for him, while Tokiyuki lands a hit on one of the dogs, but with his last arrow he moves into Tokiyuki's blind spot and hits him in the head with a point-blank shot. Pretty intense duel here and now Tokiyuki will need to come up with something fast now that Sadamune has taken a big lead seeing that losing means he's going to get outed as a Hojo in some way. |

Episode 4 Takauji has lofty ambitions, and the emperor has sent the perceptive archer, Ogasawara Sadamune, to Suwa Grand Shrine to intimidate Yorishige and search his lands for any Hojo clan survivors. But Yorishige sees this as an opportunity to get Tokiyuki to observe Sadamune's archery techniques, so he sets up a dog-shooting competition and ropes Tokiyuki into directly competing against the archer. Tokiyuki dodges Sadamune's first few arrows while forcing the archer to focus on him, but Sadamune manages to hit him in the head with his last arrow from Tokiyuki's blind spot. Even so, Tokiyuki is actually feeling excited, and he still has some arrows left to possibly turn things around. |

Episode 5 Tokiyuki turns things around by shooting Sadamune twice while twisting his body around to shoot behind him. But Sadamune is a sore loser, and he intends to take the Suwa lands by force. Yorishige suggests recruiting a masked thief named Kazama Genba to steal the Imperial Command from Sadamune. Genba is a thief for hire, but he's surprised when Tokiyuki offers him land of his own for his services as opposed to cash. Genba and Tokiyuki sneak into Sadamune's fortress. Genba disguises himself as Sadamune to get the guards away from the vault, and he shows his skills further when he morphs his face to that of Tokiyuki himself. But someone has overheard their conversation in the vault, so Sadamune will be alerted to their presence soon enough. |

Episode 5 Even though Sadamune is out of arrows, all he has to do is sabotage Tokiyuki so that he doesn't get a clear shot. But Tokiyuki uses his elusiveness to hit Sadamune in the neck with a Parthian shot, and then with Sadamune knocked off his horse, a head shot for the win. But while Sadamune lost the bet, he's still hellbent on seizing Suwa by force. In light of this, Tokiyuki is being sent away to meet the thief Genba to steel the Emperor's decree that allows Sadamune to do this. Only problem is that Genba doesn't work for free, but Tokiyuki manages to convince him that if successful he will rake in the dough, but even so Genba still can't be fully trusted. But Sadamune is coming for them, so Tokiyuki better be on his guard or else things won't end well. |

Episode 6 Genba got the decree, but now escaping with it is the hard part as with Sadamune's sight and Ichikawa's hearing, getting away will require a lot of trickery. But in the end, Genba had the presence of mind to set the place on fire, and they use that distraction to get away. After that, a lot of bloodshed going as Takauji sense a lot of blood and body parts flying with the massacre in Kyo. Takauji is Tokiyuki's next opponent, but before they face that, they go crazy, especially Genba as he goes mooning around the place. The artwork there is really something there going to show just how bloody this time was. |

Episode 6 Genba and Tokiyuki set the vault on fire to escape, but Sadamune's lackey, Ichikawa Sukefusa, is persistent with his superhuman hearing. Sadamune and Sukefusa team up to try and track down the fleeing kids, but Genba overwhelms their senses before Sadamune realizes the vault is on fire. Tokiyuki's got a new retainer, but Genba is going to be quite a ruckus to deal with. Meanwhile in Kyoto, the emperor's son is no match for Takauji's charisma. |

Episode 7 This is a transitional episode here as Tokiyuki and company play in the frozen lake to ring in the new year. There, they meet a wanderer in Fubuki, and they talk about how his elusiveness has limits as while Tokiyuki has been able to dodge everything, he has trouble against those with super senses like Sadamune and Ichikawa. In the meantime, the bloodbath continues as Takauji and company continue their conquest, and they are being quite sadistic about it. |

Episode 7 It's a new year, and the Elusive Warriors go to the northern part of Suwa territory. But Sadamune is planning to take it over one piece at a time, and he's sent a former thief named Shokan to do so. On top of that, this is a time when Yorishige's clairvoyant powers are fading, and he's worried to death about Tokiyuki's life. When the kids reach the northern village of Nakayama, they're ambushed by a dual-wielding boy named Fubuki. Ayako and Kojiro fend him off, but the battle ends peacefully when Fubuki recognizes Shizuku. The village's adults have all been murdered, leaving only the children behind, and Fubuki has been protecting them from invaders. Tokiyuki offers his group's help with the village's next defense. Meanwhile, Shokan is planning to move on the village himself, after three previous attempts failed. |

@marklebid Yeah that was my complaint from the beginning. Switches between everyone getting murdered to comical several times in the same episode. Plus, unless they want to change history, the Muromachi period, ruled by the Ashikaga lasts for over 200 years, and Tokiyuki meets a pretty ignoble demise |

Episode 8 While the kids set up traps for the bandits and Genba gets reinforcements, Tokiyuki asks Fubuki to teach him, and it turns out Fubuki has just the technique that could suit the young lord. The next night, Shokan's forces advance on the village, and the traps and reinforcements don't impede them for long. Kojiro and Ayako assault Shokan to gauge his prowess, then lure him into a house and barricade the door, leaving him trapped so Tokiyuki can face him one-on-one. Fubuki joins the fray and parries two of Shokan's top warriors long enough for Kojiro and Ayako to join him. Meanwhile, Tokiyuki evades Shokan's attacks until he's backed into a corner. He then uses the technique Fubuki taught him and manages to slit Shokan's wrist when he tries to attack him. |

Episode 9 And yet another freaky-looking enemy appears as this time it's the Ant Samurai, Shokan, who Tokiyuki engages with. Before that, Tokiyuki needs to learn offense seeing that he's great at defense thanks to his elusiveness, but attacking is another thing entirely. So Fubuki teaches him a fighting style suited for his speed, but the catch is that it's only effective in one-on-one fights, so he needs to save it for the enemy general. And onto the battlefield they go as Kojiro and Ayako lure Shokan into a trap where it's just the Elusive Samurai and the Ant Samurai engaging in combat with Tokiyuki landing a hit on his wrist. Tokiyuki is starting to learn offense there, and his elusiveness can get him the one-on-one battle that he needs in order to win. |

Episode 9 Shizuku joins Kojiro and Ayako in taking down one of Shokan's top generals, while Fubuki eventually sees through the tells of the other one and cuts him down. Meanwhile, Shokan cannot land a hit on Tokiyuki as he dances and runs circles around him, and ultimately passes out from blood loss, seeing the young lord as a divine being before he does. Sadamune shows up with some soldiers, but they all are forced to retreat once Genba brings Yorishige and reinforcements from Suwa Grand Shrine. Sadamune manages to retrieve Shokan from where he fell, and as a result Shokan actually survives. Back in the village, Fubuki knew Tokiyuki had some big secret, but he is shocked at how big it really is when the young lord reveals his true identity. Fubuki is now Tokiyuki's newest retainer, and Shokan has given up the bandit's way to become a full-fledged soldier under Sadamune. |

I feel the the enemies got nerfed way too much, with the leader being totally dumbed down into being a generic sadistic psycopath. I get that this is somewhat like a prologue, and that they likely just wanted to showcase what the side characters are capable of (especially Fubuki) but, those battles could've lasted even just a bit longer than it did, at least Fubuki's and Tokiyuki's. Oof! That's a bummer. Hopefully, the recap is so they could use the time to animate the season finale without having too much of the random awkward CGI stuff. It don't look that bad but, it definitely stands out and looks so out of place. |

Episode 10 After managing to hold off the last invasion, it's time to chill as Yorishige loves yo eat eel with leeks. Then Shizuku does a Kagura dance at a pond that is actually a sanctuary for Suwa's divine beasts. In the meantime, the the Ashikaga brothers are gearing up as they have seized Kamakura and are looking to get bigger than that. And then Yorishige talks about how times change showing him the power to change the ice formation on Lake Suwa, and about how gods will weaken over time, and that everybody will eventually disappear. Pretty chill here as Yorishige had just a little bit too much fun. |

Episode 11 And now, Tokiyuki is tasked with convincing an army led by Hoshina to stop fighting and flee knowing that things won't end well for him if he continues fighting. So onto the battlefield the Elusive Warriors go, and after fighting for a day, Tokiyuki tries to convince Hoshina to back off and realizes he has been drinking way too much that has him thinking nothing but how to die gracefully. But Tokiyuki is trying to convince him that because so many look up to him that he's pretty much doomed his people by dying, and it took a butt smack to the face to finally get it as he realizes that he needs to retreat and regroup. So with that, Tokiyuki convinces him to back off. One more episode left as the next order of business is to actually get away. |

Episode 11 Tokiyuki's group is ordered to convince a general, Hoshina Yasaburo, to stop fighting against Kiyohara, a provincial official so corrupt that even Sadamune and Sukefusa disagree with him. Unfortunately, Yasaburo and his army are hellbent on dying gloriously in battle. Genba, Fubuki, and Kojiro help to impede the advance of Kiyohara's soldiers, but Yasaburo still refuses to see reason, and he lashes out at Tokiyuki. In the end, Tokiyuki starts smacking Yasaburo in the face with his butt, and Yasaburo finally agrees to retreat and regroup. However, Kiyohara won't make the retreat so easy, as his soldiers swiftly give chase. |

Episode 12 (Finale) Now that Tokiyuki has managed to convince Hoshina to retreat, now comes the hard part as getting away is not going to be easy, albeit giving Hoshina much better odds of survival than continuing to engage. Kojiro then goes jousting against general Yonemaru to slowly weaken him, but he takes a lot of hits. While he was busy engaging with Kojiro, his allies blindside Yonemaru to allow Kojiro to go in for the kill. And then Tokiyuki leads a squad of archers to secure the escape route, while Fubuki goes after Kiyohara, threatening to kill him, but leaving him alive. After all that, Hoshina's army is home free making it back to whatever is left of his territory and ready to fight another day. So with that, the show ends with everybody making it back alive, and while Hoshina lost much of his territory, the loss of morale would have been even more devastating, which they were able to avoid. And with that, Tokiyuki goes back into hiding for now. Final Thoughts This show doesn't exactly have the strongest source material out there, but what CloverWorks did to make this show stand out is nothing short of incredible. The show makes its mark with its art style that brings the show to life. The show does a great job in the creative use of visuals, all while doing an efficient job with storytelling seeing that the manga's pacing is problematic. And then there are the characters that really stand out, and it has a strong MC lead to make this show go. That said, this show has its issue with pacing, story construction, and it trying to be too many things. But in all, a show that's enjoyable from start to finish. Grade: B+ (8/10) |

Episode 12 Genba impersonates one of Kiyohara's generals, Wada Yonemaru, to divide the pursuing forces. Meanwhile, Kojiro faces the real Yonemaru on horseback and ends up taking a slash to his arm. But when he slows down and Yonemaru stops to taunt him, some allies pull Yonemaru off his horse and hold him down so Kojiro can land the killing blow, slashing his face in two. While Tokiyuki secures the retreat with the rear guard, Fubuki makes a move on Kiyohara and slices off his hat, causing the provincial official to lose his composure and force his troops to withdraw. Yasaburo's army may have lost territory, but that's all they lost, as they escaped with their lives. I was pretty sure this was supposed to be a 24-episode season at least. While we wait for any announcements on whether the series will continue, Crunchyroll put out an in-depth article on Tokiyuki. |

That didn't really feel like much of an ending. I guess they just chose an arc and said "end it here." Knowing Tokiyuki never succeeds though kind of makes the whole show kind of pointless though. I think they could have at least gotten to the part where the emperor is again pushed out of power. The show was enjoyable despite the tone being pretty light hearted for all the horrible things going 7/10 |

There were some parts of the production that definitely felt unfinished but most of it was incredible. The important moments had weight to them and were animated appropriately; the backgrounds were absolutely gorgeous; they did an excellent job bringing Tokiyuki to life; and I feel they captured the absurdity of kids fighting in medieval warfare well. I really look forward to another season. |
