I enjoyed this anime but it was so ludicrous to divorce your husband over a chocolate bar lmaooo. Like was it really that deep?

Edit: Thanks for the ppl explaining this btw and yes, I still find this comical because I’m from America and stealing a chocolate bar is just highly unlikely to lead to divorce and downfall of reputation over here. But now I understand why this is serious in Japan.

In a small Japanese village , yes.
It was discussed quite a lot when the Episode came out , you can search in the Episode discussion/Reddit.

– Arthur Schopenhauer.

"Stupidity is a talent for misconception."
– Edgar Allan Poe.

so the girl airi (the girl that was helping him hide from the police) was explaining why she believes in ppl and went on this whole rant how her dad was accused of stealing a chocolate bar. all that made him get a divorce, leave town, and lose his job i think.

Erased is a good anime but it sometimes treats the viewer like an idiot.
That is clearly one of those times.

Well I barely remember this but I think it was the idea of theft and lying about it more so than the chocolate bar itself.

But yeah I agree it is ludicrous that someone’s wife wouldn’t even believe they were telling the truth and they’d care enough to get a divorce.

It just not really about the chocolate. Several reasons behind

1. Japan has its very deep culture about pride and society outlook towards ones self. Clearly the guy was labelled thief and a liar by his own friend and wife. Funny it may seem but a lot of Japanese people calls off marriage when someone attack ones pride and dignity there. Thats how they value it.

2. Trust seems to be broken a few times prior to the chocolate incident - its just the catalyst and final nail in the coffin.

You consider it as something funny. As far as I know, Japan has a pretty strict culture about these things. It wasn't about the chocolate bar. It could literally have been anything and Airi's dad would still have had to get divorced. Pride and dignity go a long way in their country, since ancient times. The acts of theft are looked down upon you, especially when you lie about it.

Erased is almost a decade old and this chocolate bar incident is obviously way older than that.
This could have very well changed now. Maybe your friends and family are not going to ruin your life just for stealing some candy but maybe they still do, only natives can really tell.

In a small village, word spreads quickly. Let’s say you stole a chocolate bar in a small village. Word spreads that you did so. Your reputation goes down the drain. The man once respected is now despised for his mischievous act. If I had a husband who’s reputation went down the drain in a small town, that’s basically game over for the whole family you know.

Okay thanks that makes more sense. I wished the family went together though. Airi believed in him even her mom admitted it and it seemed like she regretted not leaving with him too yk.

think about it like this, where are someone's morals if they're willing to steal something as small as a chocolate bar.

I thought the same. Theft is bad and I get what the point of the story was but cmon bruh, divorce over a chocolate bar? Out of everything?!☠
