I'm working on creating a list of all anime characters that are non-binary, whether canonically or assumed so by fans. Here's what I have thus far: CRONA (Soul Eater) - Creator couldn't whether to make Crona male or female and in the end just never made a decision. Early translations just guessed Crona's gender and referred to them with those pronouns, but modern translations refer to Crona as they/them. HANGE ZOE (Attack on Titan / Shingeki no Kyoujin) - Creator has intentionally not clarified on Hange's gender, even going so far as to specifically advise translators not to gender Hange in any translations. In fact, early translations of the manga mistakenly referred to Hange with feminine pronouns and the creator actually had them go back and fix it. ASUKA YUU - (Hoshiai no Sora / Star Align) - Actually refers to themself as Non-binary (Gender X, technically) in canon! ***Gender X is the Japanese equivalent of non-binary. NATHAN SEYMOUR aka FIRE EMBLEM (Tiger & Bunny) - I'd have to go back and watch the show to confirm, but from what I remember Nathan was genderqueer coded and used the Japanese personal pronouns "watashi" and "atashi". ***Watashi is a gender-neutral polite personal typically only used by women in casual conversation, meanwhile "atashi" is a feminine casual pronoun typically only used by women. YUMENO KYUUSAKU aka Q (Bungou Stray Dogs) - Q's gender has never been specified in canon, but there's a chapter of BSD Wan where the other characters are trying to figure out Q's gender by watching to see which bathroom they use, only for them to use the gender-neutral "multi purpose toilet" typically reserved for elderly, children, and babies rather than the male or female toilets. KINO (Kino no Tabi / Kino's Journey) - Kino is not canonically non-binary, however many people feel that Kino is very strongly NB-coded. They spend most of the series as ambiguously gendered and are not, to my knowledge (I haven't watched the series yet), at all bothered by the fact that other people can't tell their gender or often assume that they're a boy. FUJIOKA HARUHI (Ouran High School Host Club) - Haruhi is not canonically non-binary, however a lot of people feel they're NB-coded since they don't seem to care at all about their own gender or how they are perceived -- they are at first assumed to be a guy and don't bother to correct anyone because they simply do not care. They then proceed to spend the rest of the series crossdressing as a guy and don't seem bothered by that at all. On the contrary, they seem perfectly fine with people assuming they're a guy all the time and treating them as such. ENVY (Fullmetal Alchemist / FMA Brotherhood) - While fans typically refer to Envy as he/him, no where in the series does it actually state that Envy is a guy. On the contrary, Envy's gender is never actually mentioned in the series. The only mention there is of Envy's gender is an official guidebook where they are supposedly referred to as non-binary/genderless. Envy also has the ability to shapeshift into whoever they please irregardless of gender, and their preferred form is one that is described as androgynous/genderless. RIMURU TEMPEST (Reincarnated as a Slime) - Originally a male human, Rimuru was reincarnated as a Slime, and all slimes are genderless. As such, despite the fact that Rimuru can transform into any species that they have absorbed, whatever species they transform into will always be genderless. Rimuru is usually referred to as either he/him or they/them by fans. INUKASHI (No. 6) - I haven't watched No.6, but from what I've read their gender is unknown and while other characters are depicted as trying to figure out their gender, no one actual knows. BOOGIEPOP (Boogiepop series) - Boogiepop is described as having an ambiguous appearance and voice, and seeming both masculine and feminine at the same time. Their actual gender, if they even have one, is unknown. THIRTEEN (My Hero Academia / Boku no Hero Academia) - For most of the series the creator kept their gender a secret -- this combined with the fact that there are two canon trans characters in this series led people to assuming Thirteen was non-binary, and while eventually they were revealed as a woman lots of fans still like to headcanon Thirteen as non-binary. INGA (Un-Go) - Inga sometimes appears as a young male and sometimes as an adult woman, though neither of these are their actual form -- they might not even have one. If they have a gender, it's unknown. So you could consider them to be genderfluid or just non-binary. PICCOLO JR (Dragonball Z/Super) - I know you're probably surprised by this one, but technically speaking Piccolo comes from a singularly gendered, asexually reproducing race. All Namekians may appear masculine but they are all one single gender. Likely, there isn't even a concept of gender on Namek. So, technically speaking, Piccolo is Agender. OROCHIMARU (Naruto/Shippuden/Boruto) - Originally Orochi was only NB-coded, but in Boruto it was pretty much confirmed during a conversation between Orochi and their son, when he asked them if they were his mother or father and Orochimaru replied, "There have been times when I was a man, and times, a woman ... Outside appearances don't matter. The will to uncover all truth ... That is the core of my being." TENOU HARUKA aka SAILOR URANUS (Sailor Moon) - Haruka is an androgynous character who has canonically been described as "both male and female". The creator of Sailor Moon has also confessed to drawing Haruka differently depending on whether they're wearing masculine or feminine clothing. OSANA NAJIMI (Komi-san can't Communicate) - Their gender is unknown. No one knows whether they're a guy or a girl, and everyone is pretty much OK with it (the only one who really mentions it is the Protagonist, and he drops it pretty quick). MOGUMO RYUUNOSUKE (Love Me for Who I Am) - Canonically identifies as non-binary! ENTIRE CAST OF HOUSEKI NO KUNI / LAND OF THE LUSTROUS - All the characters in the series are genderless. RADICAL ED (Cowboy Bebop) - Only NB-coded in the anime, but the live-action movie made them canonically non-binary. RANMA (Ranma 1/2) - The protag is a cisgender male who gets cursed to transform into a girl any time he touches hot water, and he transforms back with cold water. Functionally genderfluid, but he still identifies as male and wants to be rid of the curse. NEFERPITOU (Hunter x Hunter) - Neferpitou's gender is unknown and highly debated. Common topics are their androgynous but more feminine appearance and their using the more traditionally masculine personal pronoun, boku. ***Boku is usually considered masculine, but can also be used by girls -- particularly tomboys. FRANCOIS (Dr Stone) - Francois's gender is unknown and purposefully left ambiguous. SAPPHIRE (Princess Knight) - Sapphire was accidentally born with "the blue heart of a boy AND the pink heart of a girl". TENJOU UTENA (Revolutionary Girl Utena) - Utena is a girl who is obsessed with becoming a prince, has masculine hobbies/interests, and has a female love interest. For most of the series Utena has long, pink hair but eventually cuts it very short to the point that Utena gets mistaken for a guy. TACHIBANA HOTARU (Aoharu x Kikanjuu/Aoharu x Machinegun) - Tachibana is a masculine girl who has masculine interests and is often mistaken for a guy, and spends most of the series with the other characters under the impression that Tachibana is a guy. |

Here are some from the top of my mind: Angela/Ash (Kurojitsuji | Black Butler): is a genderfluid intersex character. Natsuru Senou (Kampfer): He can turn to girl whenever he is close to another magical girl and even starts attending an all female campus as a girl. Really cool genderfluid characters. Run/Ren (To love ru): As Run and Ren are royalty from planet Memorze, they can change gender in mind and body upon triggering a specific stimulus; in their case, a sneeze, making them genderfluid. Sorry I only remembered genderfluid characters XD (maybe because I'm genderfluid myself lol). |
