Subtitles not working

Any advice? I have the Sentai blu-ray "EF: Tale of Memories and Melodies, Complete Collection". I bought it from Amazon so I don't think it's a fake. It looks legitimate.

But in the language set-up screen, you can't select "Japanese with English Subtitles". It's there but the cursor won't move.

If you hit play and begin an episode, you can use the audio button on the remote to switch languages from English to Japanese, but the subtitles don't appear. If you hit the subtitle button on the remote, the screen shows 1/2 English, but goes no further.

This is true with all four discs.

I've never seen this before. Am I missing something obvious?

F_ck the subtles. I always end up reading the subtles and I miss most if not all of the show.
