I know the manga was put on a seemingly infinite hiatus like Vagabond so there isn't really an ending. Is this anime the same way or did they write an ending just for the show?

If I am not mistaken the anime has an ending. Just remember that it is an awesome anime. I listen to the songs until today!

they didnt write an ending just for the show, they just wrapped up chapter 43 in a way where you dont need to read the rest. highly recommend reading it tho

Anime finishes off at chapter 43 or something, ending is great but still it would feel sort-of incomplete. Haven't read the manga yet but i know it's incomplete as well. I would say watch it, ending doesn't matter, it's a really great series.

It's one of those shows where the ending isn't as important as the character development and situations that arise along the way. While I can't say if there was any character development involved in this show, it's more about what happens, how it turns everyones world around and how they react to it in their own ways. So i would suggest to watch this as a fun and emotional rollercoaster rather than being fixated on the ending. But to answer your question, while watching the anime I was convinced that it didn't have an ending and there were a lot of unanswered questions, but now that I think about it, you could say it had an ending (not a happy one though, but that's the beauty of the show, it doesn't run on coventional ideals but is more bent towards the practicality) but it still is kinda incomplete.

A complete resolution to the story? No.

Something that feels like a wrap-up in spirit, and is in more ways true to life and the nature of the show in what it leaves unresolved? Yes.

It leaves off at a Cliffhanger. I’m so devastated, I remember catching up to the manga back in 2009 just to find out the author became ill.

There is said to be a second season only will be made once Ai Yazawa finishes the story according to madhouse.
