Girl goes to a mansion and finds vampire boys. I don’t remember why she went. All of them try to force themselves on her in each episode and act very edgy. The show is really bad and cringy but I remember continuing to watch it because for some reason I liked Laito’s character design.

There are many reviews talk about how bad the plot is. Well, in my view, the plot is pretty much messed up so that people will buy the game for the whole plot. I really believe it’s a marketing strategy by Rejet. Unless you play the game, you won’t really get the whole story of Diabolik Lovers.
Being the marketing victim, here is the plot that I know from playing the game. In case you find the anime plot is very disturbing, I suggest not to read further. It will get uglier. So here it is, Haunted Dark Bridal in summary…
Yui is an orphan raised in Church by Seiji, a priest. One day Seiji told Yui he had been summoned by church abroad. He needs to go to Eastern Europe, in an area where he used to be around when Yui’s father was young. Yui doesn't like the idea she will be left behind. She wants to go with him. Seiji told Yui it is hard for him as well but he has no choice. He assured Yui that an arrangement had been made for her and gave her the address to the Sakamaki manor. He told her they are far distance relative and related to the church as well.
That's how Yui ended up in the Sakamaki household.
The head of the Sakamaki household is a politician in the human world and a Vampire King, ruler of all vampire in the demon world, Karlheinz. He wants one of his sons to take over the throne but the condition for that, the king must be killed. But he is too powerful, none is powerful enough to kill the king. One of the reasons Karlheinz being so powerful is that he is married to the daughter of the Demon King, Cordelia. A vampire power can be powerful depend on the partner of the vampire.
So, in order for his son powerful enough to kill him, claim the throne, and becoming the next head of the household, he need his son to obtain the blood of an awakening bride that will give power to surpass the Vampire King. Basically, he is making the effort to get himself killed. (It’s a vampire thing) So, for that purpose, sacrifice bride had been send to the boys. The one able to successfully turn the human girl into a vampire, will became his bride and become the next Vampire King. (Most of the boys doesn’t really care much about the throne by the way, although they would gladly have the power to kill their father. Depend on the route and character you play, there can be lot of killings and deaths going on or no death at all).
The Church seems helping Karlheinz in choosing the sacrifice bride. Although the Church feel bad, but, a few sacrifice is necessary to safe more life and they also looking forward for the death of Karlheinz. Although the plan goes well, the awakening of becoming a vampire is not easy. The sacrifice bride either ended up lose their life or lose insanity. Yui is now the next sacrifice bride send by the Church.
If you haven’t watch the anime, ever since Yui starts staying with the Sakamaki, she always experience pain in her chest. As the story goes, Yui starts to experience some changes in herself. Yui then found out she possess Cordelia's heart which was transferred in her when she was a baby. Depend on the routes you choose playing the game, some of the route Cordelia take over Yui's body. So, how did she end up having Cordelia's heart? Here is the long story :-
Karlheinz and his younger brother, Richter had a duel for hand in marriage with the Demon King's daughter. Karlheinz won the fight and got married to Cordelia. Richter who genuinely in love with Cordelia, saddened with his defeat, travel around the world as poet in the human world. Karlheinz on the other hand, I believe it’s more kind of making use Cordelia for gaining power. He don’t really giving much attention or listen to whatever Cordelia tells him. He had a second marriage with Beatrix, then later with Christa. Cordelia is in much jealousy when Beatrix giving birth to Karlheinz’s first and second child, Shu and Reiji. This causing Cordelia putting pressure on his eldest son, Ayato, to become the best among all of the siblings especially not to loose to Beatrix’s first son. Beatrix too gave little Shu a hard time for he is the first son of the Vampire King. Little Reiji seeking acknowledge that he is far better than Shu from his mom, struggle with the rivalry grudge. Beatrix died as she got killed by first class vampire hunter hired by Reiji. At her moment of death, Reiji approach Beatrix to show her it is his doing meeting her death. To Reiji surprise, Beatrix very satisfied as she had expected from Reiji. She had a peaceful death which make Reiji really pissed off. From then, Reiji made a lot of research and experiment to revive vampire back from dead so he can revive Beatrix and kill her again. In Reiji route, when facing Cordelia controlling Yui’s body, made him realized how his mother must had felt relief as she had been freed from Cordelia.
Christa, on the other hand, has a different story. At the time Christa gave birth to Subaru, she lost her sanity. She always abuse Subaru, screaming and shouting, even hurting herself. There are time when she will be in her sane state. That's the time she hands over the silver knife to Subaru. Christa is being locked up to be kept alive by Karlheinz. Among the three wives, Karlheinz seems to love Christa the most. Cordelia keep getting ignored by Karlheinz which making her vow to kill him by her own hands to prove her love to him.
In an event in Karlheinz’s castle, Richter came and facing Cordelia as his sister-in-law, accepting the harsh reality. While addressing Cordelia, Cordelia insisted Richter not to call her such way and told Richter how she regretted for not choosing him over Karlheinz. Richter calling her an evil woman but still he submits himself to Cordelia, because he too realized that he still has the chance to beat his brother if he can make use of Cordelia’s blood.
Cordelia relationship with Richter is like an open book. While punishing little Ayato by throwing him into a fountain in the castle garden (I think it’s a fountain), Cordelia purposely called Richter to meet her there. She insisted Ayato to stay in the water and not to come out. Richter asking Cordelia is what she about to do is also part of Ayato’s punishment. Cordelia replied the things she about to do is a punishment towards Karlheinz for favoring the other more than her. Cordelia make out with Richter and walk away with him leaving Ayato with his scream in the water. She also make out with Richter when little Kanato is around playing with Teddy. Richter asked Cordelia if it is really alright while little Kanato is there. She simply replied Kanato is a good boy and he will just play by himself. The two continue while Kanato talked to Teddy and laugh creepily. Another thing that Cordelia had with Kanato, is that she found Kanato's singing voice always make her feel on heat. She always asks Kanato to sing for her.
While there were many bad treatments towards Ayato and Kanato when they both still a child, not much story about little Laito. However, the adult Laito had the worst. While she had the scandal relationship with Richter, she too toying around with anyone she can seduce and get laid on, including the adult Laito. Whenever she doesn't feel satisfied, she will call Laito to come to her. As Laito's feeling towards Cordelia got deepened, he kills most of the men she slept with out of jealousy. Cordelia doesn't seem to mind losing her toys as she easily get bored with them. If her toy doesn’t get killed by Laito, Kanato will turn her toy into a wax doll. Cordelia even give Kanato one of her maid to be turned into a doll out of her rage. As for Richter, on the other hand, Cordelia told Laito not to kill Richter as he can be a good use to her. The most traumatized moment for Laito was when he got punished by Karlheinz, where he was locked up and chained in prison of the castle to repent. Cordelia came to Laito’s prison. Laito though she came to safe him but to his surprise, she came with Richter. Right in front of Laito she makes a move on Richter. Richter hesitated but Cordelia said she will walk away if he won’t play her game. The two making love right in front of the chained Laito.
Hence you can imagine the hatred the triplets had towards their mother. On the night when Ayato attacked Cordelia, Cordelia ran to Laito, asked him to safe her, only to be pushed off from the balcony. Unable to move, she called Richter to come to her, asked him to cut her heart and transfer her heart to a new body. After Richter carried away Cordelia's heart, Kanato found Cordelia's body and burned her to ashes. Kanato kept Cordelia ash inside a bottle and placed inside his Teddy to be carry around kept close to him. Richter randomly found Yui while she was a baby. She already lost her life but able to survive because of the new heart. Richter couldn't keep Yui by her side as he doesn’t want Karlheinz to find out. So, he brought the baby to a vampire hunter, Seiji, also the priest, to take care of the baby. Coincidentally, the same vampire hunter Reiji hired to kill his mother.
Cordelia despite being weak and unable to move, she able to use familiar to put in Yui's name into the Church's list as the sacrifice bride. Only with the intention to take over Yui's body upon her awakening and kill Karlheinz with her own hands as she had vowed.
Thanks to Cordelia's heart, Yui is the only sacrifice bride that last long enough compared to others.
As for the ending, there are many endings in Diabolik Lovers. Each character’s route has 3 different endings. The vampire ending (the happy ending), the manservant ending (not a very happy ending) and the brute ending (bad ending) plus an after story unlocked the same time with vampire ending and heaven bonus story can be unlocked for each character.
If you are interested to know each ending, you can look up at tumblr dialovers-translation. I could never be able to finish and understand the game without her impressive hard work in translating the whole game.

Oh my God, no wonder the anime and even the manga seemed to make absolutely no sense. If this wasn't posted here, I would've spent my entire life wondering what made this absolute mess of an anime get a second season.

It has a far better plot than most romance titles, certainly than most harems. People often complain it has no plot but then proceed to watch one of the many, many romance titles which really has absolutely no plot progression and call it good.
@plstce As for what the actual plot is:
Yui's the child of a priest who's sent away on an overseas mission and is left in the care of “distant relatives”, upon arriving in the mansion Yui finds out that these relatives are all, in fact, sadistic vampires and after running from them initially finds out that his parent had adopted him when he was delivered to the Church young, and that they are not biologically related.
Yui has nowhere to go now and realizes that he might have been sent as a sacrifice and often experiences strange chest pains when in the vicinity of these vampires who also remark when sucking Yui's blood on how it tastes better than anything, and how they're drawn to it.
Yui starts to see the ghost of Cordelia, the parent of these vampires around the mansion. At this point various flashbacks of the vampire's youths are also interwoven which explains many of their quirks and a figure called Richter shows up, who seems to have some grand plan.
Several of the flashbacks reveal that and how the vampires killed Cordelia who was a very bad parent, but they also leave a mystery open that after being pushed from a balcony, Cordelia lay dead with a hole in his chest where his heart should be, which was never recovered.
Yui's chest pains get worse and it's then revealed that Cordelia's soul is inside of Yui and that Richter actually found a dying Cordelia, who asked the former to cut his heart out and implant it into a child to præserve his soul. That child was obviously Yui who is revealed to have been carrying the heart of Cordelia this entire time, explaining the chest pains and why his blood is so attractive to the vampires who all have an incestuous love–hate complex with Cordelia.
Richter's plan is to awaken Cordelia from inside Yui, which happens, and Cordelia's spirit takes over Yui's body, though the latter tries to fight back a various parts. Cordelia believes to be using Richter as a pawn, but the opposite is actually true.
At the end, the vampires stand off against Cordelia but aren't willing to kill Yui's body; Yui regains control at this moment and stabs himself in Cordelia's heart, killing Cordelia, but Yui is given a new heart and is hinted to have become a vampire in this process in the final episode.
As for the common complaint that Yui does not run away. That's integral to the plot and many of the vampires do point this out to support their argument that Yui is a masochist and enjoys all the mistreatment, which is clearer in the game where the player can hear Yui's thoughts, who absolutely becomes aroused by all the mistreatment. There's nothing “no brain” about it; he simply on some leve enjoys being bitten which should be obvious from the sexual sounds he makes when it happens. In the game, one can choose as the player to admit this to the vampires or deny it, in the television series, they adapted the denial-routes where he doesn't admit it, but they'll see through it anyway.
All in all, not a super stellar plot, but certainly better than almost all romance, especially harem. Most of them don't have such tightly-woven plot twists.
