Well, that's majorly disappointing, but the idea that they are using these big events for just merchandise means that they are really piling up the cash. So popularity or economical problems shouldn't hinder Season 3. I guess they are building up a new crew team for the anime.

There are a few differences between now and then.

In 2016 they didn't expect the series to blow out like it did and didn't schedule a second season in advance.
Right before the second season started airing, the director wrote that the community would wish for a third season, implicating he was already open for a third season.

In 2016, the light novel adaptation of the web novel wasn't far enough for a second season.
Currently, there is enough content to adapt for two double cour seasons, with a fifth potential season currently in the works, as well as a lot of content to adapt as movies and OVA's.

yeah, i think we wont wait 4 years unlike 2016 they now know what to expect.Only and biggest problem for adaptation is white fox itself.It is a fantastic studio,but its on its last legs with staff so even if they adapt 3rd season i dont know if animation will improve

Yea... budget... but what is budget for when they cut half of it? I would very much rather it be White Fox with some help from a bigger studio.
