I barely remember my own name and the names of some of the people I know, because I even forget those sometimes, so yes. I can distinguish them but I usually just refer to them by something characteristic instead of their names.... unless is a character I really like, then the name never goes away.

I forget more than I would like to forget, sometimes I have to revisit the characters page to make sure I understand the dialogs

❝見つめないで 悲しい方を
目を瞑って 口づけしよう
甘く溶けるメロディー❞

❝邪魔しないで
真夜中のパラダイス
息もせずに潜っていく
二人だけのダンス❞

i do a decent job remembering names while I’m watching, but afterwards I forget them hella fast unless I found some new favorite characters, or it’s a new favorite show. Most of the time if I forget their names mid show there’s way too many pointless characters

Yeah, almost every time especially with short anime series. There’s shows where I can instantly remember every name, and then there’s shows where I still forget their names after a rewatch (even though I enjoy the show)

I take a faux-Zen approach, which is to say that I don't actively make an effort to remember anything, because I find that if the story and characters are worthwhile it won't be long before I remember everything about it, every detail humanly possible including character names. And if they aren't worth it then it isn't worth occupying space to remember the mediocre or mundane.

So from the first episode on I just don't even try to remember character names, even down to the simplest ones. And if the show is one I find myself actually really getting into then it's quick and without effort that I remember everything organically anyway.

The most difficult ones would be "normal" Japanese names with a given name and a family name/surname both - something that a real Japanese person even today would have. Rather than a more memorable one name moniker or title. So "Rytuaro Okamura" or "Kohei Fujiwara"; a conventional real life name, as opposed to something more indicative of anime.

For me it’s not really forgetting who the character is or what their names are it’s kinda like mixing up characters for other characters in the same show

Really only secondary/minor characters that I have no interest in.

If they have english names I'll have more of a chance of remembering them. In any other context? yeahhhhhh no.
