I would like to eventually but right now I just stream whatever I'm watching and buy the DVD/Blu-Ray of the shows I like the most.

My policy is to never delete anything I download from the internet, anime or otherwise, unless it's broken, harmful, or a duplicate downloaded by mistake.

I have two external HDDs (2TB + 1 TB) which are full and the main one which is also 1TB is full. The content of it is 90% anime and anime movies. I seed/re-upload a lot, so one of my external (the 1 tb one) is already dying.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Depends.

My internet speed sucks, first and foremost. And last year in this same month, I did not own any of the laptops (that I own now). I used to use my decade old PC with a Pentium IV processor and 80gb hard drive (that I upgraded to 500gb then)... it ran Ubuntu Linux. And I used to keep it turned on all the time.

I used these softwares :
uGet
FlashGot

And I downloaded from a particular anime streaming website that had download links below each episode stream. In low quality like 360p and 480p as well. So I used to put them all on download and set priority too. This way, I would download huge number of anime. I would set one on download in the night and go to sleep to find it downloaded the next morning. I have 300gb of anime today, all of 360p to 480p quality. Except for 2 or 3 that are 720p and 1080p (Steins;Gate and SnK).

Try to avoid torrents when it comes down to anime downloading. They generally don't have the quality you want. You should download and keep a backup, basically to share with your friends or to just have it for some or the other reason.

I haven't downloaded anime in about 6 months now. Been streaming all the while.

I've had many external HDDs of varying sizes over the years before upgrading to a 2TB HDD earlier this year. I only keep the stuff I like and delete what I don't particular care for. Will probably have to buy another soon since I'm running out of space.

What if the download is not properly marked and you wind up with a foreign language subs?

You end up with a broken blade in that case. I would file that under "harmful" tag, for an anime that you spent hours downloading and cannot watch is nothing less than heartbreaking.

I download all the anime I watch. Even if I stream it, I download it later. At this point, it kinda became like a collection of sort for me.

I have 3.22TB of anime in a NAS system that my boyfriend put together. That's not all I watch and it's not all that I have, I have more in different folders.

3.22 TB nice :)

I am currently in the process of purchasing 10x 4TB HDDs and and 2x 5 bay JBOD enclosures in which to move all of my data over to, giving me 40TB in storage space. Currently I only have 14TB downloaded due to hard drive space. I do this because I fully believe that one day in the near future, the Internet will become heavily policed and downloading/streaming anime illegally will become impossible, or at least too risky/difficult to do as much as we currently do. This will mean that the majority of anime will be lost to people who don't own it. I'm storing it all up in the event of that happening because my obsessional personality won't let me rest.

Yeah... I believe it's going to rain and I'm going to lose my Internet connection and have nothing to do.

It only happened to me once. At least it was only like 300MB so took no time to DL.

They can't do anything about IRC. I support this mentality anyway. If I could afford it I would do the same thing so I could later provide the anime/games/whatever to people who want it.

I'm sure that one day they'll find a way... but at least for now IRC is stable and reliable. I'd hate for it to go down/be policed. And thanks for supporting the idea :) I plan to start on manga too, eventually, but I reckon that will be much harder to stay up to date with and to track down old, forgotten releases.

No I mean it's literally impossible to prosecute anybody from it due to how IRC works. They can only track the amount of data sent/received but not what is sent. The only way they could try that is by hosting their own content and trying to do it that way. I think that would qualify as entrapment though. Mangatraders was the best site for manga. Sadly it's gone. I heard the entire archive has been uploaded elsewhere though.

I don't think Anna ever said that. But surely you've been in or read various threads about buying anime that're full of "I don't buy anything, it's a pirate's life for me," "I have like 4 DVDs, the rest is pirated," "I support the industry by buying a bigger hard drive", ">buying anime lol," and similar responses. And historically, many shows got hundreds of thousands of downloads or even 1 million+, yet breaking 10,000 sales was a major success and many shows struggled to break 4 or in some cases 3 digits. (As detailed in this podcast.) Yes, some people who download do also buy, but the percentage is quite low.

You'll find that the most common answer to this question is "720p for most shows, 1080p for movies or really HQ shows, 480p only for old stuff that isn't available in HD."

That's really a shame that some of the great animes are in low quality like 480p because when you watch it on for instance 42" screen it looks like it's a god dammit mash. Just saying.

I only save anime that I kind of like, but it's still too much for my 500GB ext.HD. My laptop's 1TB hard disk is nearly full now. I need more space because I am not mentally prepared to delete anything more...

Downloading all the One Piece episodes was a bad idea though. :/

I have a 5tb external hard drive for any anime, movies or anything like that to go on, and a 4tb hard drive for my games. Though I generally end up buying anime that I really like when it's readily available on bluray and not ridiculously expensive. I do sometimes buy anime that I haven't seen yet as well though, gotta support the industries you love!

And all of those numbers are inflated anyway since they consider every single download a lost sale.
