I would recommend reading Tokyo Ghoul.

It has one page or two or romance hinted at between side characters, but no actual romance.

It also is very much a seinen manga, and is very well presented.

The anime was also very enjoyable, but you may not like it because of it being rushed and the second season being "original"

I have no idea how I even considered watching Hunter x Hunter 1999 because I am just an ultimate art snob and I usually hate stupid MCs, but somehow it's pretty much my favourite anime of all time. I know you said no pre-2004 but. Can't help it. Sorry.

Listen you. SAO is the only one on here that I understand... People have very mixed feelings about it. The other ones are literally so ridiculously loved because of their superior character development and story-lines, that your reallllllly missing out.
