I have came up with a MAL Updater OS X frontend. You still need Growl to see if it's updating, but you will be able to control it when you need it instead of having it running in the background continuously when you don't need to (and it's a waste of resources). The program itself is lightweight and is a small window that won't appear unless you put MAL Updater OS X GUI in focus.

The program itself only uses around 10 MB of RAM, so it doesn't use that much memory. Currently, you can't hide the dock icon since RealBasic does not support using the MenuItem icon... meaning creating a menuitem on the Menu bar is currently not possible.

This GUI requires 10.4.11 or higher since there isn't any Ruby support below that.

Download (3.1 MB) - Universal Binary
http://malclientosx.googlecode.com/files/MALUpdaterGUI-1.2b.zip

This contains the GUI and the MAL Updater OS X 1.2 scripts. 1.3 will be added once the original developer of it reuploads that version.

To Install and use: Run the MAL Updater OS X Installer and then launch the program. Then you need to verify your MAL account. To start scrobbling, just click "Start Scrobbling" and it will start. It will generate the ruby script required with the username and password and run it every 10 minutes. Once you done, click "Stop Scrobbling" and it will stop and will delete the script. The script is deleted as a security precaution and the password is encoded to prevent other people from having access to your password

Source Code will be posted on the MAL Client OS X SVN.

Special thanks to TakakoShimizu for creating the original MAL Updater OS X Ruby Scripts.
