That's pretty shit. As a shounenbabby, I will always enjoy a good fight scene but I have no patience for when they get drawn-out weekly which Naruto was definitely very guilty of towards the end. I suppose they're popular with the younger audience and the cliffhangers must drive up ratings somehow.

I found that tldr quite fascinating to read. I think it's the most in-depth I've seen a Jump author go. I only have to assume that Togashi negotiated the terms of his contract very strictly. There are a couple of things Jump didn't let him do (such as his dream gay football trap manga), but he must've had some pretty clear ideas of where he wanted to take HxH to begin with and I'm thankful for it and the way the cast of HxH are written.

I think they're definitely a necessary part of the genre, but yeah extremely lengthy fights definitely are a mistake. Can confirm the last bit as back in the day those DBZ cliffhangers were amazing and I loved 50 episode fights. Not so much anymore obviously.

Less worrying about weekly hooks and more focus on overall direction, I assume. I'm actually somewhat interested in the concept of a manga model that doesn't rely on weekly/monthly magazines and instead publishes tanks like books are published. I'd be curious to see japan try that out mainly for the kinds of stories we'd get, but ultimately it probably won't be as lucrative as the old-fashioned model.

Yeah, spending several months just working on a specific volume would likely give the authors a lot more freedom since you would only need the cliffhanger at the end of the volume.

That as well, he hasn't really expanded Brook past skull jokes. Franky has brought a lot of new ridiculousness to the series with each arc while still staying true to his original personality. All the other characters have had new gags and their old gags have been escalated to keep them funny and ridiculous. Brook so far has been more of the same.
