Although, the story is sorta changing my biggest complaint about it in the shape of Velvet's character development. I hated how the game wanted us to sympathize with her at the beginning, when she's clearly become a horrible horrible human being. |

PS.Blog: Nier: Automata Was Fueled by an Unknown Passion. Hello, I’m Yoko Taro. I’m the director for a game called Nier: Automata that launches March 7 on PS4. The reason why I’m writing here today is because I received a question from the PlayStation.Blog team: “The original Nier has become a cult classic, but what does it mean to you, and what were your goals for the sequel?” But… it’s hard to answer because I didn’t have a noble vision for it. Rather, it was more like a force of habit. When I created Nier, it was getting harder to create games within the business structure of the company that I was working for at that time, and I thought to myself “This is so tiresome, maybe I’ll just leave the company.” The concept document that I wrote at that time, thinking that it would be my last, was the prototype for Nier. After many twists and turns, the previous Nier became a title that I like, although it did not sell too well and I did end up leaving my previous company. However, fans of the previous title have continued to support it for a long time after that. This reached the producer’s ears, which led to the start of the Nier: Automata project… this is the sequence of events leading up to our release of this game. Everyone at PlatinumGames who developed this game respected the previous title and created a spectacular game for us. I was in charge of the scenario, but it’s all poop so I don’t want you to expect too much from it. Sorry, I went off track there. What I wanted to say was that both the previous Nier and current Nier: Automata are games that exist due to the constant support of fans. The true nature of a game is not a strong and charismatic director displaying his or her vision, but instead is something formed by some kind of an unknown passion felt by a greater number of people. And after being formed in such a way, I’m not quite sure what kind of result Nier: Automata will bring about. I do think that there will be all sorts of reactions to it. Some may think that it’s fun, and others may think that it’s boring. But as someone that took part in the creation of the game, I do hope that it would hold some kind of meaning to everyone that plays it. Alright then, goodbye. http://blog.us.playstation.com/2017/03/03/nier-automata-was-fueled-by-an-unknown-passion/ This guy is just a treasure. I've never played any of his games before, but everything i keep hearing and knowing about them now makes me think about how talented the guy is and how shitty this industry is for not giving the guy the resources he needs. |

It would be cool if I could play the other titles. I did that too and i was pretty fascinated TBH. It's incredibly hard to find a Japanese game with this much attention to the story anymore. lol Let's not get ahead of ourselves now. The Nasuverse is multiple times more complex and way denser, if only by the sheer number of works. Their gameplay looks pretty meh. This is why i think that his games were always hampered by bad to mediocre elements that he had no control over. If i were ever to each any of his games, i'll probably try Drakengard 3... on an emulator, because the game's performance on the PS3 was a joke to say the least. -Mahesvara said: I believe the game was just getting you to sympathize with her reasoning rather than her actions, so I didn't have a problem with it, she's an anti-hero afterall. Neither her reasoning was sympathetic, because it's selfish and evil, nor can she even be called an anti-hero, because, again, her objective is selfish and self-serving. What really did it for me was when she was asked to destroy a warehouse and she does it without asking any questions and when she's told it contained medicine for the poor, she doesn't give a single fuck. Later, when she knows that the warehouse contained addictive drugs, not medicine for the poor, she literally says that she doesn't care and she'd have destroyed it either way. Anti-hero? She was pretty much a villain. |

You can understand how each series leads to the next and where they timelines split and some char relationships a lot easier. I dont know if it was the fault of the vid/narration but the Nier/Drakengard series didnt have that. I was lost when they started crossing from fantasy world to modern japan setting . |

I'd say it's probably the video you watched. The stories of Drakengard and Nier have a lot of fluff, it seems, so it becomes easy to get side tracked and talk about a lot of irrelevant things in the bigger picture, but everything else seems straightforward. If you want a good video/s explaining the entire series or just Nier to get prepared for Automata, i highly recommend this one: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLI1L9JVl6TFdwfvKUuebNp_zOAL5XXDT5 I recommend just watching the 3 Nier videos, as they're all you'll need. |

@astroprogs First off how is trying to avenge the death of your brother considered evil? Even if Artorious is seen as the savior of the world, the game does a good job at showing that him and the Abby are really shady early on. Sure its selfish self-satisfaction, but it isn't evil. Yeah early in the game it focuses on on her draker side, but it also shown subtlely that she still has a lighter side to her. Labeling her as a straight up villian and a horrible person is a complete diservice to the complexity and depth of her character. |

It was to avenge her brother regardless how many other people's brothers she may kill in her way. It's selfish to the point of being evil because she puts her desire for revenge over other people's well-being. "How dare he use and kill my brother!!??? I'll get back at him by using pretty much every single person i meet, including taking the life of the Malak who risked her life to save mine." Let's also include telling that Malak "I won't thank you!" in her dying moments while draining her life out for extra edginess. Hypocrisy thy name is Velvet Crowe. Judging from the first ~7-9 hours in the game, she was a pretty horrible person to every single one she's met with the exception of one because of a plot-related likeness. Funny and quirky moments don't make her any less of a horrible person when her actions are pretty efficient in doing the talking. Another set of encounters that just made me actively dislike her, at least until she started getting character development, were the ones with Eleanor. I mean, c'mon, she's pretty clearly a good person, why be such an ass towards her? Here's the point I'm currently at so you get an idea of what I've and haven't seen of the game. The scene where Eleanor loses consciousness after Laphicet stopped her when she tried to kill herself after losing to Velvet. |

It's selfish to the point of being evil because she puts her desire for revenge over other people's well-being. Its not like she's actively trying to ruin innocent peoples lives or killing them, she just didn't care about the collateral damage left behind by her actions. That's just recklessness."How dare he use and kill my brother!!??? I'll get back at him by using pretty much every single person i meet, including taking the life of the Malak who risked her life to save mine." Let's also include telling that Malak "I won't thank you!" in her dying moments while draining her life out for extra edginess. Hypocrisy thy name is Velvet Crowe. Seres was going to die in the first place and she was the one who wanted Velvet to devour her, so she could gain her power and you could tell it wasn't easy on Velvet at all to do it in the first place, so that's a terrible example. Seres's sacrifice would have been pointless otherwise.Judging from the first ~7-9 hours in the game, she was a pretty horrible person to every single one she's met with the exception of one because of a plot-related likeness. Funny and quirky moments don't make her any less of a horrible person when her actions are pretty efficient in doing the talking. She was just cold, indifferent, and standoffish. After being betrayed by someone you had absolute trust and faith in, it makes complete sense for her to act that towards others. The only party member I recall her treating really poorly was Magilou, but she was asking for it most of the time as she was an instigator. You also have to remember the people she's teamed up with aren't exactly good people themselves either. Why was she an ass to Eleanor? She's on the side of the enemy and she has blind faith in the person that Velvet hates the most, so her ignorance irritated her.Another set of encounters that just made me actively dislike her, at least until she started getting character development, were the ones with Eleanor. @-Mahesvara >she didn't care about anything else. >she just didn't care about the collateral damage Apathy for the well-being of others is evil. Actually, in the real world, we call it Sociopathy. The point wasn't if Seres wanted to be sacrificed or not, it's that if the situation didn't play like it did and Velvet needed Seres's power, would Velvet kill her anyway? Judging by her actions, she would. She only cares about avenging her brother and, at that point, it's clear that she'd stop at nothing. I didn't say that her character didn't make sense, i said that she was a horrible person. Yes, being betrayed by a family member she trusts the most, watching her brother get impaled by that family member in front of her eyes, being unable to save him and being in solitary imprisonment for 3 years doing nothing but killing monster would totally result in a broken psyche and unreasonable/unhealthy priorities. All of this, however, doesn't make her actions any bit less evil. Sociopaths are clearly ill AND evil. Sociopaths don't get sympathy, they get isolated from society to protect it from their harm and get treated or imprisoned for life in a medical facility if their condition is untreatable. The people she teamed up with aren't much better either, i agree. >She's on the side of the enemy and she has blind faith in the person that Velvet hates the most, so her ignorance irritated her. It's almost, like, you know, they could communicate and explain their view points instead of one side keeps shunning the other with all the aggressiveness and "crybaby" comments. Unfortunately, one side was a sociopath incapable of sympathizing with other people's PoV. >Yeah, you barely scratched the surface of the game tbh, you're at the beginning of chapter 3 and there's 7 chapters total. In that situation she really didn't have any choice. She didn't want Seres's sacrifice to be wasted, because if she didn't devour her there Velvet would have probably been recaptured again. Also the connection between her in Seres runs a lot deeper than you know, you'll find out later in the story.Judging by her actions, she would. -Mahesvara said: It goes both ways. Eleanor was doing the same though, she is shunning Velvet's group as well. Only thinking they're a bunch of evil Daemons out to ruin the world and the Malak's are acting as rebellious tools, because as a member of the Abby, she's taught that Malak's are nothing more than tools for exorcist's to use. It really doesn't. From what I've played so far, from the top of my head, i can count at least two instances of Eleanor going "That's terrible. Why would you do 'X'?" only for Velvet to reply with what boils down to "don care fuck off". Eleanor exhibited numerous signs of being a good person in her encounters with the group, Velvet never did, not even once. Eleanor at least asked to try and understand, Velvet never bothered. -Mahesvara said: I assure that where things are headed, for example, despite how they treat each other now, her and Eleanor actually develope a good relationship. Just don't expect Velvet to become some goody twoshoes though. That's good to know. Of course not, that kind of 180 shift not only would be unrealistic, it'd be plain crappy from storytelling perspective. I fully expect her to keep her sharp attitude. |

Hey @astroprogs if I were you I might hold off on finishing the Zesteria anime, at least until you finish Berseria. The reason being that since the anime is going to an original route and they keep making references back to Berseria: Velvet's name and story is brought up multiple times, they had two Berseria episodes, and Velvet's even in both OP's, so I have a feeling that the climax has the potential of spoiling a lot from Berseria including the end game. Just a word of caution. |

Reviews for Nier Automata are out! Highest-rated PS4 game of the year so far. Brackets are number of reviews: 89 (36) NieR: Automata 88 (97) Horizon: Zero Dawn 87 (87) Nioh 87 (9) Night in the Woods 86 (93) Resident Evil 7: biohazard 84 (8) Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands 84 (77) Yakuza 0 84 (21) Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone 80 (11) Forma.8 80 (89) Gravity Rush 2 Put simply, NieR: Automata is the greatest game ever made. It’s not just that it is the deepest and most narratively potent game ever developed - and it is a truly deep narrative experience - but more than that, Yoko Taro has finally found perhaps the developer on the planet capable of doing his visionary work justice. This game is a true, genuine work of art, and anyone who wants to prove that gaming does possess an equivalent to the greatest novels, operas, theatre plays, or paintings, now has that very game to point to. Yoko Taro is gaming’s Shakespeare, Da Vinci, and Welles, all rolled into one. Digitally Downloaded: 5/5 LMAO wow. |

Sorry about the Nier spam, but I'm fanboying pretty hard right now and i just can't help it. RPG Site: Okay, to finish off... so, Taura-san, if you could take Platinum and make a game in any other Square Enix franchise - East or West - what would you make? Taro Yoko: [in a high pitched voice, hand over mouth] Final Fantasy! Takahisa Taura: [laughs] No... I mean, I could only think of another Nier after this! RPG Site: I know you guys work at Square, but what about you? Taro Yoko: Hmmm... Dragon Quest... if I was allowed to do anything, I'd take Dragon Quest and make it a really brutal, really nasty game. You'd see the monsters start eating people, they'd be molesting the female characters too. Yosuke Saito: There are already places like that in Dragon Quest! Yoko: Ahh, I don't need to make it then, it's been done already. Saito: ...but I don't think Dragon Quest has been done overall in that way. [laughs] Yoko: I'd love to see all the cute little villagers running around screaming and getting torn apart! Saito: I'd like to do Space Invaders in the arcade... Taito is in the same group as us, after all. I've never made a proper arcade-only game before, after all. Yoko: If it's a shooting game, I'll make it for you. Call me, call me! How the hell did i never hear of this guy before Automata? Also, i really love this art of the protagonists of the highest rated Japanese games ATM entering the next Game Awards ceremony: Link: Let's go, guys. 2B: *smiles confidently* Hmph. P5 Protagonist to security guard: Yes, these two are my date escorts. |

ShinsoPriest said: So how about that Zelda BoTW? Do you think it's overrated? Getting a perfect rating everywhere I look day 1 is just suspect. Bit slow at the beginning but once you get your paraglider you are absolutely free to do whatever the hell you want and explore freely to your hearts content. If you are a fan of open world games, exploring and doing things your way, you will definitely love it. If you prefer linear games that moves from a to b to c with cutscenes containing a rich developing story and characters then maybe not (but I do recommend giving it a try with a rent!). I'm personally not too big on open world genres but even I'm pretty hooked. The high praises and over hyped perfect scores are a little exaggerated. I'd personally give it a 8-9/10. It's a fun experience! Buy or Rent? Buy Wii-U or Switch? Both are good. The frame rate problems on the Wii-U are over exaggerated. My Wii-U is one of the later models and runs it just fine (my bros Wii-U is the first one and that shit suffers hard). Switch version only plays well as a handheld (this amazing experience is not meant for a tiny screen!). Dock mode suffers worser frame drops due to the upscaling and the game being a port. If you have a later generation Wii-U and want to play now, get it. If you want the Switch version but not too desperate to play then I recommend waiting as the system is currently suffering from hardware issues (left joycon desync and lag) and even software glitches (cartridge can't be read indefinitely unless you plug a headphone into the socket and then unplug it...). It's not a day one purchase. Wait for revisions, better deals, bundles and more games. |

Some criticisms I've read of BoTW are -subpar framerate -repetitive tasks -weapon durability being too low and being an annoyance -boring bosses, some of which are almost identical -really easy last boss -poor ending compared to other Zelda titles -low density world -mediocre story -music not being as memorable as it goes for a more atmospheric approach 8/10 seems like a good score. I don't own a Wii U or Switch though I've played all the Zelda games except for the NES games, DS games, and of course BoTW. |

A lot of people who praise the game to the heavens seem to acknowledge its shortcomings, but "the good overwhelmingly outweighs the bad" is usually the argument. With Zelda games, it's always wise to wait a couple of months after release for the blind fanaticism hype to die out and more balanced and clear-headed opinions to rise up to the surface. |

I'm under the impression that the people who gave perfect ratings are the ones who received a free Switch and review copy, so they're inclined to give a perfect score without even finishing the game. |

I definitely wouldn't generalize. One site at least, Giant Bomb, gave it a perfect score and they're known to be one of the most honest in the industry. I can't talk for the rest, but I at least trust these guys to give their own genuine opinion. |

ShinsoPriest said: Some criticisms I've read of BoTW are -subpar framerate -repetitive tasks -weapon durability being too low and being an annoyance -boring bosses, some of which are almost identical -really easy last boss -poor ending compared to other Zelda titles -low density world -mediocre story -music not being as memorable as it goes for a more atmospheric approach 8/10 seems like a good score. I don't own a Wii U or Switch though I've played all the Zelda games except for the NES games, DS games, and of course BoTW. I share the exact same sentiments with every points. This is correct in my experience. Particularly the last point. Story is very meh. astroprogs said: A lot of people who praise the game to the heavens seem to acknowledge its shortcomings, but "the good overwhelmingly outweighs the bad" is usually the argument. That and blind optimism as you mentioned. Kinda like a relationship. Starts off good til you start seeing the cray cray and flaws (some will admit to it while majority excuses it). eg. The Force Awaken is a garbage remake of A New Hope and we all remember how that was highly praised and continues to be spoken in such high esteem to this day. |

I've watched it and had a wtf expression on my face the whole time so I don't think it's much of a spoiler. I mean a dickless man getting double penetrated and birthing a new dickless man begs A LOT of questions. |

Seriously though, i'm on a complete black-out about the game and i intend to keep it that way until i play the game myself. |

Just saw the SAO movie. Pretty damn good. I keep forgetting how good a theater is at enhancing the experience. |
