| I've been reading translated manga since childhood, stuffs like Doraemon and the 4-koma Kobo Chan. I wasn't even aware they are Japanese, so I guess I'm just used to it to be bothered by not knowing 100% word by word. There has been a shift of preference though. I used to read in my native language but changed to English since I moved away from my home country. I am now more comfortable with reading in English because phrases in manga translated to my language sometimes sounds too cheesy or to formal for the setting for me. I just started reading a manga in Japanese because I can't find translations of it nor do I have hope for it. My Japanese is very very limited though, thus why I haven't done it much. I still have to use Google Translate a lot of times, but I can already feel some phareses do feel differently when I read it in Japanese vs other language. I still think most translated manga are good enough, since the story is told from pictures as well and you would be able to tell characters personality for example, just from how they act and the drawn expressions. I kind of have problem with a certain officially licensed light novel though. The characters sound really harsh and I'm not sure if that's what they're supposed to come across as. They don't look like that on the illustrations.. sometimes I even find my imagery is very different from the illustrations. |

| I know Japanese, so it doesn't apply to me. I still read most manga in english though. It's actually pretty hard to get my hands on raw Japanese manga. Flying Witch was better in Japanese but ultimately no matter how much Japanese you study you'll never know all the slang and the constant doubt means the english is better unless it's a series specifically considered "good for Japanese learners". If the translation ruins it, so be it. There are plenty of manga in the sea, if the translation is bad I'll change to a different manga. As for what I've read in Japanese: Yotsuba to, Flying Witch, Dark Gathering, (a little of) Eminence in Shadow, Conbini de Kimi to no 5-funkan, Mieruko-chan, about 6 web novels, and Hidamari Sketch. |
| Translations can be very good, especially in recent years since manga become even more commercial. More money in the market = better translations on average. I would never want to miss out on manga (or comics in other languages/from other cultures, like french or italian or spanish) just because of that. I've read a lot of manga in both german and english and have been very happy with the translation quality, especially since I tend to read more gekiga and literary or historical manga which are often translated by really reputable publishers that don't just operate in the manga market and who aim to please an academic audience as well. I could see there being some issues with sub-par translations for manga that are largely aimed at kids and young teens tho, since publishers might not think they have to put in as much effort for those target audiences. But most of the ones I read never have problems with localization, in some cases theyre closer to the opposite, they are so deeply japanese/based on real japanese history that there are tons of footnotes or a glossary at the end to explain who/what all the historical figures or locations are and what specific terms of that time period mean. |
