Last night I watched The Homeless Student, starring Koike Teppei and based on the true story and book of one member of manzai duo Kirin. It was a good movie, though Koike Teppei just didn't seem to fit the part. I was expecting a more serious film, bt it's actually quite funny. Somehow I wanted them to have taken a more serious approach to his situation, but I guess this is based entirely on his point of view so I'm okay with it. check it out, folks! |

It has some sad and some serious parts, but for the most part it's funny kind of cute. His entire stint living in the park was pretty amusing. Also, Koike Teppei's naked bum when he takes his first bath after becoming homeless elicited some giggles. |

Just finished 1 litre of tears, overall very good. In the end credits when they were mentioning what everyone was now doing, the fact that they didn't mention haruto (her love interest) made me suspect that he was shoehorned into the story and didn't really exist? If thats true not sure how I feel about that. Also, the definitive ending makes me think the special is just going to be a recap? If so I think I'll leave it for a bit. |

Movies, movies, movies! Tonight so far I finally got around to watching Le Grand Chef/Gourmet/Sikgaek, the movie version from 2007. The drama version of Gourmet is by far my favorite Korean drama series and I watched it first, though it was made after the movie. I don't really want to compare the two, but if I were to recommend one or the other, it would definitely be the drama version. Yes, it's a whopping 24 episodes, each about an hour long and it lags in the beginning. But it's obvious that there's more room for character and plot development, and for a much more concentrated look at Korean traditional cooking. The movie is good on its own, but the drama is most definitely better and worth checking out. A few reasons (I didn't *want* to compare the two, but I have to anyways): 1) A better cast. Kim Rae Won is ADORABLE as Sung Chan! Bong Joo's actor is a lot cuter too. So the series wins over the movie in the eye candy department. 2) I actually cared about Jin Soo in the drama and the subtle romance between her and Sung Chan was very well done. In the movie, her character was just kinda... there. I cared more about every character in the drama than I did about the ones in the movie. 3) The food gets the spotlight in the drama. Gorgeous, mouth-watering food and a close look at how its made. Foodies, unite! The movie, on the other hand, focuses on the drama of the story and the conflict between the characters. The food and its preparation takes a backseat, unfortunately. 4) The movie's Oh Bong Joo is a really mean, ugly, greasy-looking guy with no redeemable features. Drama Oh Bong Joo is evil... but understandably so and a very likable character. I could go on and on. Skip the movie, watch the drama. You'll be a happier person! |

Really? I would most certainly have watched the movie without Koike Teppei. Edit: Every time I come to this thread today I forget to mention that I finished Kamen Rider 555. It was an alright toku series, though there was a lot that bothered me about it. I mean, I was excited for the first 35 or so episodes, but it got kind of bad after that and the ending was meh. More detailed comments in the discussion at my club, MAL Tokutaku, if anyone is interested. XD |

Just watched two more movies~ Taste Of Tea Yet another movie I was told by many people to watch. Didnt find anything special about it. IT was funny at various parts, but nonetheless BORING. Ohayo A 50's movie (Filmed in the 50s) which talked about missed dues and TVs. It was pretty entertaining half of the time, but the restI hardly paid any attention cuz it slowed down. But I enjoyed it! Now I need to find more to watch that I can rent. I dont have time to sit and watch stuff on the PC. D: |

Kamen Rider 555: Paradise Lost, the movie that was released in theatres during the series' airing. It's an alternate universe and of course benefits from a movie-sized budget. It was awesome to see the effects on the Orphenochs, especially. They kind of condensed the basic story of the series down into the movie, so it felt a bit rushed and they one giant, gaping plot hole as well as some smaller ones... But overall it was good Kamen Rider fun! |

So I finally watched ikigami . I liked the concept of it A LOT . And i loved the individual stories in it too. (Yamada takayuki made me BAWWWW)... BUT I really was hoping for some resolution to the movie. I felt unsatisfied with the way they ended it. So kids just keep getting the shots? I was sort of expecting something to happen to cause the law to be changed or something. It really bothered me that nothing happened. Also, was there any hidden signifigance to the beggining sequence of the guy almost kiling the guy who bullied him? And also the ending scene, with matsuda shota staring at one of the doctor-guys. Those scenes felt really out of place. Overall, it reminded me a LOT of sweet rain, except overall it really failed at piecing all the stories and situations together and felt rather random. But i did enjoy it a lot for the individual stories it told. |

In reply to your post about Ikigami, kat: The doctor was the guy at the beginning, who freaked out because his girlfriend got an Ikigami and died, and was carried away in a straight-jacket. I presume he underwent the same thing that the politician did in consequence of committing a "thought crime": recanting and/or reprogramming. Society doesn't change overnight. It can't change overnight. But it's a bunch of little changes behind the scenes that make a difference. Matsuda Shota's character was opened up to the truth about that dreadful law and the ikigami, and he realized his boss knows how screwed up it is too. The politician's husband found his calling in life having experienced first hand the pain of losing someone because of law. A handful of people found new courage to face the day because they lost a loved one to the law. You can see the changes beginning in the wings of that society at the end of the movie. I was satisfied with the ending because of that. I mean, it would've been so melodramatic if anything else had happened. It wasn't an action movie like Minority Report, it was a human drama. So I'm satisfied with the way it ended. Just not in the execution, forcing morals down my throat. This is one of those sci fi stories that shows a future society that could very much become real. It reflects the current society and tries to bring to light the current society's faults. I bet there's a statistic somewhere in Japan right now that says something like 1 in every 1000 people a day is thrown aside, because their company had to restructure them and they can't find or job, or they commit suicide out of depression, or they can't get the medical treatment they need, or they're used by others and then thrown to the curb. The point, to me, is that each of the individual stories were beautiful, and the fact they didn't knit perfectly together (well, they did imo) isn't a big deal. I just wish it hadn't been so preachy. |

Ah okay, i knew i had seen his face somewhere before in the movie. Thanks! I know that society doesnt change over night, but i guess after reading so many alternate-goverment/society books I sort of expected some sort of rebbelion of sorts. Like i kept thinking "oh, if the guy dies on tv, maybe people will realize how the law is stupid" or" oh if the guy attempts to kill his mom maybe the mom will snap out and try to change the law :O" <- though later i got the impression thats what she was trying to do all along. But i mean overall the movie left a lot to interpretation about how the society actually worked. Like what happened to pepole who got sent to the place when they spoke out about the law, who created the law? etc, a lot of questions were left unanswered. I blame this on the fact that its based from an ongoing manga that has 6+ volumes. I did like the fact that a society like this could become real, like you said. thats why i liked the whole concept of the movie alot, but the way they carried it out through the movie sort of dissappointed me. I did like the individual stories , like i said, but I guess when i watch stuff with multiple stories the movie just becomes amazing if they all tie together at the end. I absolutely love those kinds of movies/books/anime/manga whatever. It gives me a moment of "wow, i would have never thought these could be related!!! so cool!" xD so i was hoping the movie would at least do that. but my two expectations throughout this movie were not delivered, which is why i was a little D: when i finished. I think this movie had the potential to be so much better than it was. and it was a good movie already :x I actually didnt think it was that preachy overall :x maybe ive just read too many of these kinds of stories to notice XD |

Just watched tokyo tower (2007 movie). The first half was really slow and draggy, but the second half i started to love it, and fall in love with the mother, and by the end i was crying my eyes out. Odagiri joe was amazing. I dont understand why theres a 2006 movie adaptation of the novel too... but i may end up checking out the 2007 jdrama since i feel like a lot of loose ends didnt get tied up from the movie. |

The 2006 version is a TV movie and I'm assuming the 2007 film was made because of popularity? Personally I like the 2005 movie called Tokyo Tower, with Matsumoto Jun and Okaka Junichi playing 2 guys who have affairs with older women. XD I should watch this Odagiri Joe, movie, though. Ah yes, Odagiri Joe. Kamen Rider K-K-K-K-KUUGA! |

I just finished watching the Densha Otoko DX special. It was enjoyable, though a bit different in style in the series. 9/10 In quite a few ways, it reminded me of the Hana Yori Dango movie that occurred after seasons one and two. Both couples have at least one member on a faraway island, and at least one person has to face physical challenges on this island. In addition, the movie ends on the island, with large depictions of love (in the form of a heart) on or around the island. |

watched su-ki-da today. probably the worst japanese movie i've ever seen. I posted in the old-movie of the week thread :P oh, but aly summed it up nicely in her comment last month in this thread algelic said: - "Sukida" (japanese) - So booooooooring. I mean, I like the occasional silent moments in a movie, but this was pretty much 90% of it. Plus, the romance was not interesting. Bad then to make up for it i just watched Ichi. it was SO good. I loved ayase haruka's role. And Touma was so cute! and the end was T___T but <33 i really liked it overall :D oh, and ayase haruka singing was awesome too. |

I watched Ichi awhile ago. It was a bit over-the-top dramatic for me and the guy playing the villain with the eyepatch was poorly cast. Kubozuka Yosuke would have been so much better in that role!! And instead they stick him in as the rebellious "village kid" type role. BAH. |

I ended Akai Ito and LIFE. The first one is good, but I didn't like the ending a lot, too banal and predictible. And the second one is more serious, the theme of the series is treated carefully, but I think it can be extreme sometimes. I have to take a look at the manga anyway. |

Just finished the Gokusen 3 graduation special... for some reason. XD Well, I might as well. It was just an extra-long episode and I skipped through the usual speeches and fighting scenes because I've seen/heard it all before! Still, good old YanKumi. I will watch the movie when it's available, mostly for the return of the older cast members. Finally took a look at the movie cast: Kame returns as a new teacher at YanKumi's school, plus Oguri Shun, Narimiya Hiroki, and Ishigaki Yuma all reprise their roles from the first series alongside Kuma. Too bad I don't see MatsuJun anywhere in the cast. =( |

Gokusen 3 was so weak compared to the first 2 series. Not quite as good a cast and generally even more repetitive, predictable scenarios. YanKumi's speeches even seemed word for word from the first 2 series and I skimmed a lot during the episodes (without missing anything) because of that. The only bright point for me was the continuing saga of Kuma! =D Yet, somehow... I keep on watching it. @_@ Forget to mention about Gokusen 3 special: I seriously want YanKumi to marry Baba. He's so perfect for her in every possible way. XD |

Gave in and watched 20th Century Boys tonight. Never read the manga, though I've heard of it. I was going to wait for all 3 movies to be released, but seeing how that won't be until next year I decided to just check this one out now. It was kinda creepy, but enjoyable. Maybe a bit to ambiguous and lacking somehow, though maybe this is spot-on to the manga? I get the feeling I need to read the manga to fully be able to appreciate the film, which kind of sucks as it alienates non-readers like me. Sometime I'd like to read it, but I don't have to the time or interest level right now to do so. Gripe/WTF: It's kind of obvious that it's Sasaki Kuronosuke (Fukube) beneath the mask during the concert scene, and later on the balloon. His voice, even distorted, and stature are unmistakable to me. I'm sure I'm not the only one who could spot that, but I don't think the spoiler was on purpose, or if it was than I don't think it was necessary. I'm not sure if he's the real Friend or not, but I already figured out he's in the cult. |
