I actually think being a Turk yourself is actually a malus just because it is human nature to immediately relate the object of investigation to things we already familiar with and ignore everything else. Earlier someone mentioned "Ackerman" being of Persian origin when anyone who lived in Germany can testify that the likeliest explanation would be the German surname Ackermann. That said Eren could very well be of Turkish descent. I can certainly see either or both of his parents being Turk. As a sanctuary for all mankind, it makes sense for people from many ethnicity to be present within the wall. Also Anatolia is within a reasonable distance to Germanic lands. My own theory is, given the ambiguity of Romanizing Japanese as shown by Levi/Rivaille brouhaha, that "Eren" should have been written as "Erin". Irish name in origin that can be given to male and female. I prefer this theory as Turks did not come to Germanic area in large number until the 1800s while Celts have settled that area for more than 2000 years. |

I liked the theory about their nationalities though, but like someone said it's a fictional world, so we can't just rely on this. But following the theory, there's any hint about Rivaille, he could be japanese as well, because of his tiny eyes and short high. Berserk is a fictional world based on real life. SNK might be too. Levi a Japanese? His pupils aren't right to me. Asians generally have squinty eyes, but the pupils shouldn't be smaller either. Methinks he's a Jew. |

The first time iv'e seen someone say something nice about Jews on the internet xD What you said is actually quite accurate, Jews are the most intellegent race through out Earth's history by a large margin, and this was actually proven. Went a bit off topic there so: Levi is one of the most common jewish names, so its a fair assumption that he indeed is a Jew. |

I find it hilarious that people still use someone's hair and eye colour to determine their race. I find it even more stupid how people still believe that only Americans and Europeans can have blue/green eyes and blonde hair. Has anyone ever seen Northern Pakistani people? Kashmiri people? How about Lebanese? Syrian? Irani? Afghan? They have eyes and hair colours that I've never even seen on Europeans or whoever you mean by the typical "caucasian". Now having light/pale skin is also a similar matter.. |

I can imagine people in real life that the characters actually resemble. Mikasa for instance. I actually sighted a look-a-like at the station once. Turkish people don't have any feature they can be identified with. So "he looks turk!" is quite a reckless statement. The guy looks like a regular anime boy. I am surprised nobody created (afaik) any conspiracy theories about Eren's nationality being a clue about future events. Since that is what everyone likes to do with the overhyped shows or books, create deeper meanings that the writer or director didn't intend to. |

Since that is what everyone likes to do with the overhyped shows or books, create deeper meanings that the writer or director didn't intend to. This was my initial thought. I would not have declared him turkish at all and just assume that he was like everyone else, except one thing. His first name. At first, I assumed nothing based on appearance. His name, coupled with an appearance of an middle eastern/mediterranean person led me to believe he's turkish. Eren is a Turkish name in case you were wondering. Have you met many mediterranean/middle eastern peoples? My whole kindergarten class was full of them. My neighbourhood was full of them. Take my word for it, I think I can judge appearances (Australia is a multicultural nation). neUtrino_23 said: Guess this sums it up the best. She's apparently stated as one of the last orientals (Asians) in the walls by those kidnappers that abducted her. I think ethnicity has some importance here. You think the names are coincidental? The author created them with meanings being the names. Eren means holy in Turkish while Jaeger means hunter in German. |

The only thing which is Turkish is the language and the culture - not the looks. Some people in this thread pointed out that Eren might be a Turkish name and we won't get any further with that. Don't all the humans in SnK have the same nationality? They're living under the same reign. HalfMetalJacket said: Why some attention to Mikasa's ethnicity then? She's apparently stated as one of the last orientals (Asians) in the walls by those kidnappers that abducted her. I think ethnicity has some importance here. You think the names are coincidental? The author created them with meanings being the names. Eren means holy in Turkish while Jaeger means hunter in German. Mikasa's ethnicity had as much importance as the amount of perversity of the sick guy they wanted to sell her to and the money they'd make with this fetish. I said nothing about 'coincidental', I said the creator(s) picked names and appearances which aesthetically pleased them and also that all cultures are mixing up inside humanity's last enclave. So... Eren Jäger is a fine name for a guy to hunt down titans - nothing more, nothing less. |

Deconstruction ≠ Darker & Edgier Trope ≠ Cliché (Face it, nothing is completely original. Can't make something from nothing so to say.). Fanservice ≠ Ecchi (Though ecchi can please the fans!) I am surprised nobody created (afaik) any conspiracy theories about Eren's nationality being a clue about future events. I am turkish as well but in the first episodes, before I've read any of the forums, I thought it was just another japanese name since it was kinda appropriate for the language. It maybe the turkish but even it is I think those names are there just for the feeling of "mixed society". I don't think they have any further significance. neUtrino_23 said: Adramelech said: Turkish people don't have any feature they can be identified with. Yes, actually the name "Turk" is given to the communities that talked turkic languages back in time. So, it wasn't about "race" to being with. |

Can't we have fun speculating things? We really shouldn't use the word race in this context. Nationality and ethnicity are the correct terms to use here. Aside from that, please leave us alone to speculate. It's fun to speculate these things, okay? There's no harm speculating these things, is there? |

There's the harm of repeating and keeping alive racist stereotypes - and that won't be different if you call it ethnicity. Just skim over 2 or 3 pages of this thread and you'll find enough stereotypes (some pretty bad) to make you puke. |

LevailRenn said: Forgive people if they don't know everything about every culture in the world. How dare they not know everything! Then why assume like an idiot, no? Anyway, as I said before, I just think that the creators use random physical features coupled with random names. I don't think it's easy at all to pin a character fully on one race. There are mixes of many physical features in each race. Giving a group of people a certain type of look is stereotypical and untrue. |
