I'm interested in playing Japanese Visual Novels & Eroges but the problem is I don't know the first thing about them. What I'm trying ask is how do I download them & make sure it successfully runs on my PC without crashing. Whether it be old games or new games, I'm wondering what I need to do for it run smoothly as possible. Also, I've heard you might need a translator if you're going to play these in English. Does anyone know any accurate translator apps or clients for Japanese VN's I can use? Any useful info at all will be much appreciated.

I am guessing you use Windows? Download Microsoft's Japan locale so you can swap your system between English and Japanese. Lots of games will simply crash or not run when you don't have it.

Do you often play games on your PC? Most of the popular eroge have official translations you can buy and download just as with any other PC game. Jast and Mangagamer are a couple of companies known for translating and selling these sorts of games.

Many english translated eroge games are available on Steam, like Nekopara, Katawa Shoujo, etc... You just need to know where you can download their uncensored patch, and thats it.

The thing about eroge and galge is that the market remains exclusive to Japan, for reasons that seem obvious. So if you really want to get deep into this, your only option is to learn Japanese. Or you could say "screw the story" and just play the game for the visuals. In fact 3D simulation games usually don't have any story, so you would be fine with that genre.

But for ADV or novel style games, not knowing Japanese severely limits your options. Very few games have been officially translated. And there are some fan-translations, but quality of those varies. And the translator client you have heard is actually a machine translation overlay. It's equivalent of reading the dialogue while it's getting translated by Google translate, it's not a good experience.

So overall, this isn't something that's easy to get into. I would say you should give up unless you are willing to deal with a lot of headache.

On a side note, you might came across vndb.org, the most popular english website on topic. It seems to have a lot of useful information but, the staff behind it has been doing things that are questionable to say the least. A forum post about it explains it in detail

Be wary if you decide to look up information there.
