Episode 1 And here is a new way to introduce a wimpy-ish MC in a fantasy setting as Krai decides to become a hunter and form a party with his childhood friends, only to find out he’s not cut out for the job and just wants to quit. But his friends think he should lead them, and that puts him in a tight spot. And the he’s in the center of a tavern fight and needs to be disciplined for it by being required to take an undesirable quest, or chore as he calls it. This time he won’t have Arc bailing him out again. At least it’s an interesting concept, but I’m hoping that the wimpy MC doesn’t drag things down.

I suspect that Krai is more cunning than he thinks he is. His gut instinct is probably better than most other characters' reasoned logic. Or everybody else is just so stupid that it doesn't really matter if he's the leader or not. I like how things are shaping up so far. My first impression is that it seems to have a good mix of action and humor. I'll be watching.

Sort of RPG-based but at least it doesn't have stat screens. (Yet.) Production values seem mid-to-adequate although they did cut away from the bar fight, which was probably for comedy reasons but I consider that a warning sign anyway. MC seems tolerable, and there's an assortment of waifus. Unless this takes a nosedive somewhere, I'll probably be in for the season (I have extra time on Sundays anyway.) The title is both misleading and weirdly hard to remember (at least for me) but at least it isn't as bad as some of them have been recently.

Okay, he's not as pathetic as I was worried he was going to be from that plot summary. Though it seems like we're already leaving the MC behind for some side characters.

It's weird in Japanese also but maybe flows better. Nageki no bourei wa intai shitai The grieving spirit wants to retire The implication of a 'grieving spirit' is like a miserable ghost stuck in the real world unable to move on to the next world. Bourei is a ghost/spirit of the dead but colloquially can mean someone who's way past their prime, of retiring age, still at a job but they won't leave and are inconveniencing the younger folk. |

@zkeleton Frankly I would have preferred that certain main characters in other shows followed that idea... I might start thinking of this one as Irresponsible Captain Krai.

The MC is really annoying and I am worrying this will get old. At least the way he thinks of himself is like the blond hero guy in Reincarnated as a Slime...Masayuki? Where all the people around him worship him, and end up doing everything for him and making him legendary

That was fun and the art was nice, and Tino was super cute. I'll probably watch just for her even if the rest goes to sh*t, hopefully it doesn't. MC doesn't bother me, I'm tired of edge lords and dumb asses.

Episode 2 And thus, the Grieving Souls party is born, as the Grieving Soul in the show's title refers to the part and not the fact that Krai saw somebody close to him die that he has lost all reason to live, much lest continue on being a hunter. He chose that name in hopes of someday convincing his comrades to abandon him. With a new mission in hand, he's sending Tino to do it, but she needs stronger party members. And so, Tino and Gilbert battle it out to see if he, along with Greg and Rhuda, join Tino on this quest or not, and Tino totally outclasses him so he's on-board as Krai knew that Gilbert had left his old party. Krai continues to do things with his mind as he's plotting something and is looking to know as much as he can to make it through with this quest. Pretty amusing stuff once again as Krai is being put into an undesirable position and is using every trick in the book he can come up with to make it into retirement.

Episode 3 The quest begins as Tino, Gilbert, Greg, and Rhuda head into the dungeon, but they are having a lot of trouble as they are up against a phantom, which is a very strong monster not normally found in that part of the dungeon. They were about to bit the dust when they realize that they are totally outmatched. But then Krai rushes over there arrives just in time to save the party. This goes to show that Krai makes a big difference even if he isn't exactly fit to be a hunter. But he's really going nuts seeing that he just flew across the sky to get to the dungeon on something he doesn't trust.

It's irritating that he really doesn't have any sort of capabilities. Doesn't he get *anything* from being level 8? I thought the hook would be that he's essentially a relic specialist but it seems like even his relics are underwhelming palour tricks. At the very least I had expected that in a life or death situation it would turn out he's actually a great leader just a reluctant one. But it seems the show is really going to go with him being clueless and everyone just continually believes its all some sort of elaborate master plan.

I'm two episodes in and still not sure what this anime's goal is. Each time I think there's some glimmer he's got something going on it turns out to be trickery. (Which I guess fits his nickname.) Is it a story about a hapless guy failing his way up? And what's with that glow that happens at times when he's talking to others? Hoping it turns out his friends knew he was useless in combat and the reason he got picked to be leader was because they didn't want the job any more than he did. XD One more episode to reach the Rule. Not sure if my curiosity to see what might actually be going on is enough to overcome listening to Tina constantly gush over her master. zkeleton said: That ED is just annoying. I usually listen to the OPs and EDs at least once to see if I'll like them, but I didn't get five seconds into this one before I hit the skip credits button.

@HOOfan_1 The name of the ED is 'Scream" sukuriimu. There are various words about yelling/screaming in frustration at adventure life not going as planned. Also wanting to eat ice cream aisukuriimu. Probably trying to make a mildly horror related thing with the guild being the wailing souls. 嘆くnageku; to lament; to grieve; to regret

Episode 4 A magic bag that only holds chocolate seems useless for hunting, but it came in handy for this mission, and Krai nearly led the party down the wrong path in the dungeon, only to find the stranded hunters by accident. And then the enemies that gave these guys a tough time were defeated by none other than Liz, who had been wearing a mask. So with that, the mission is complete, and while they are continuing to give credit for Krai, he knows that he doesn't deserve it. A pretty silly turn of events there just when things were looking bleak, but nevertheless he did complete the quest.

So this is a one beat gag? Seems like the glowing light is just a way to show he's thinking to himself? I'm usually not a fan of "character has hidden secret power they don't even know they have", but I was hoping he might have some insane persuasion skill that he's unaware of and uses unconsciously. It's a more palatable explanation than "everyone around him is an idiot". I'm surprised Eva falls for his facade. Usually the right-hand of the leader knows all the dirt and chooses to keep it to themselves for the good of the organization.

@HOOfan_1 I suppose I'm trying too hard to make the anime make sense. Comparing it to Dandadan though Dandadan is completely bonkers I understand its world, the plot, the stakes, and the character motivations which makes it an engaging story. Retire I don't get the plot (is there one?) or the stakes (are there any?) and the MC's motivation could be instantly resolved by just saying "I'm out". There's nothing keeping him from retiring but himself.

Episode 5 Now that Krai has a successfully completed quest under his belt, it's onto the next chapter as it introduces Sitri, who is the party's alchemist and the brains behind the team. A long time ago she created a slime that's quite powerful, but it has gone missing. Krai has nightmare that Sitri's slimes go out of control and burn the city to the ground, and wakes up right beside Liz as he's trying to figure out where the slime went. Given the severity of the situation if it remains unresolved, things were rather lighthearted. And then that ending, Sophia is definitely up to something. Anyway, this is the start of what ought to develop into a crisis situation if that nightmare is any indication.

Yikes what is Liz crazy? She's not a yandere, just homicidal. Or is there already a"-dere" to describe her? Tino is just as crazy to be trained by her. Of course given the girl who made the slime that's the equivalent of a nuke I'm guessing eveyone except him is kinda nuts.

@MenchiK1 Yandere seems right. She's willing to kill -- specifically anyone who inconveniences or besmirches the name of the guild leader. Like Tino with her poor performance, reflecting badly on the guild master's leadership and subordinates who are nicely training her! The origin of yandere is from 病 yamai, illness in general. Can be physical or (for the purposes of the yandere) psychological.

Episode 6 Krai has been tasked with investigating the White Wolf's Den with Sven's group. Ark isn't available, so Krai has to stand in for the job. And in the meantime Akashic Tower led by Noctus has been plotting and scheming as they declare war on the hunters, and Sophia is plotting something really big, and it involves using that slime that was stolen. All this is happening because of something Krai said that he didn't really mean as he continues to unintentionally stir up chaos.

This running gag of him muddling his way to accidental success makes him the least interesting character in the show. Once or twice is amusing, but as an ongoing thing it's just tiresome. At some point he needs a command presence or something to solidify his role as MC. Also, a sad lack of Tino's underbooty in this episode.

Episode 7 The raid at the White Wolf's Den begins to take down Akashic Tower and slay the slime. They are joined by "Talia", who is an alchemist who knows about slimes. It didn't take long before they found a monster who was injected with the slime, and it's resistant to both physical and magical attacks. Talia provides an anti-slime solution that Sven lures the monster to, but that didn't take care of the problem. Then Sitri arrives throws something to defeat the slime. Sitri surely showed what she's capable of, and while she isn't physically strong like Liz, her intelligence is really something.

Episode 8 As it turns out, Talia is somebody who learned alchemy under Sitri, so her knowledge comes from that. Sitri saves the day as she uses her alchemy to heal everybody, as well as to get those slime monsters to fight each other. While Akashic Tower was ordered to follow Sophia's lead, they decide to disobey them as those guys get quite desperate. Flick unleashes his Calamity Thunder move, which is supposedly his ultimate technique, but Sitri knew exactly how to counter it. So with that, the battle is on to take down Noctus an the Akashic Tower gang, but they need to be wary about Sophia as she's a big threat.

By simply not including the MC in this episode except for a brief appearance at the end, they actually improved the show (though that's not saying much, TBH) I've not heard such cheesy villain dialogue in -- well, since yesterday, when I watched Demon Lord 2099. Some really embarrassingly bad villain-writing going on in the low-rent shows this season. Please note that I am not including Acro Trip in that condemnation because in that one it's being done on purpose.

Episode 9 Just like that, Krai arrives with backup, and they turn the tables in the battle against Akashic Tower. And then Sophia reveals her true identity as Sitri, all while Talia was used as her body double. Sitri became an undercover member of Akashic Tower in order to learn from Noctus, and while she didn't tell Krai about it, he knew right away what she had been up to. So with her identity revealed, she uses her newly-created slime monster to take out the Tower, and in the end they were left without their memories, all while Noctus became the fall guy for this whole incident. Sitri sure is the brains of Grieving Souls as she really made Akashic Tower look silly in all this.
