I can’t stand dubbed material both in anime and regular tv. I think most of the time it just feels “off” because I can imagine what the Japanese voices would sound like and then the eng dub is just completely different from what I would imagine and it ruins it for me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

95% of the time I'm watching a show with subs. Only on rare occasions I'm watching an anime dubbed. It's just how I'm used to. Overall I prefer to watch a show in the original language than in the dubbed version.

I prefer to watch in the original language (if I am aware of it) + JP is a nice-sounding language in general.

The art is always objectively better to experience as it was created by original creators. For various reasons, but the main one is simply because this is how it was originally done. It's the pure and unaltered form of art.

That's why you go to the art gallery and always want to see the and appreciate the original instead on looking on photos or buying printed copies or replicas.

Voices are carrying a whole cultural heritage on the top of it. Mannerism, the way that directors made the voice actors act can't be copied and re-created in other language. Remove them and you have completely different characters. So, you're not even watching the same thing anymore.

People who say that “you don't understand what the characters are saying anyway” are full of ignorance. To the point where I don't know if it's not trolling. No, you don't need to know the language to appreciate the work of the original creators and what the voice actors give with their work.

And the best are those who say “that I can multitask as I watch dubs”. So are you watching, or doing something else?

This applies to any work of art from any country, not just Japanese. I would never watch a dubbed anime, but I'd never watch German move dubbed, or the Simpsons with my local dub. That's just a heresy for me. Not to mention about how localizations are done for dubs too that are altering the dialogue. Dubs have no single advantage for people who finished their first years of education. The only place when dubs are justified is kids content.

Also the phrase "dub vs sub" is annoying. It's dub vs original and subs are irrelevant. It's about voice acting and work of original creators, not subs.

So, for me there's no such thing like "deciding which I'm going to watch", it's original voice acting or nothing.
