Plot Summary

After the Golden Kingdom is sunk underground by an insane magician, its king emerges, promising all of his treasure to any who defeat the magician, before crumbling to dust. Guilds are spurred on by this promise, traversing the labyrinthine dungeon in search of the magician. Laios, the leader of one such guild, encounters a dragon that wipes out his party and devours his sister Falin. Despite having lost the entirety of their supplies and belongings, Laios along with Marcille, an elven healer, and Chilchuck, a halfling thief, immediately reenter the dungeon, determined to save Falin.

Time being of the essence, Laios suggests the taboo of eating the monsters of the dungeon as a means of gathering supplies. Upon the preparation of their first meal in the dungeon, they are stopped by an onlooking dwarf named Senshi. An enthusiast of monster cooking, he helps them prepare their monster ingredients for safe consumption. After learning of Laios' circumstances, Senshi expresses his desire to cook a dragon and joins their guild, thus beginning their food-filled foray into the dungeon together.

First episode is now up on Netflix as this time we have Netflix dungeon rather than Netflix jail.

Episode 1

It begins with Laios being transported out of the dungeon by Falin after his party gets defeated by a red dragon and Falin ends up becoming dragon chow. Needing to find a way to save some money given the need to spend their money on equipment that Laios resorts to eating slain dungeon monsters for food. So it's back to the dungeon where they cook up a scorpion hotpot, and they run into the dwarf Senshi, who is quite the chef. Thanks to his expertise in cooking that the party enjoys a nice lunch. After that, Senshi joins the party as he longs to make a meal out of a red dragon. Seeing that she is an elf that Marcille would naturally be a picky eater knowing that they generally are vegan. Senshi sure is quite knowledgeable there about making meals out of monsters, and his explanations about how plants are fertilized in the dungeon is really something. That was a great way to start things off as it looks at another side of adventuring, and that is what to eat while on the dungeon quests. Senshi absolutely stole the show as with him around, there's no need to go grocery shopping.

Something tells me that Laios wanted to try eating the dungeon monsters for quite a while before this, and having to rescue his sister on a budget merely provided the perfect opportunity. Plus, anything they learn while preparing the food may actually help them in slaying the monsters more expediently.

This series has the feel of a traveler's version of Restaurant to Another World. By that, I mean the party is traveling around gathering ingredients to cook for themselves instead of remaining in one place and cooking for people who come to them. It's also a good thing that Netflix decided to do the same-day dub treatment on this series, like what they did with Violet Evergarden in most English-speaking areas (although they didn't give that privilege for that one to the U.S.). My one gripe about the dub is that Netflix has no forced English subtitle track, like what Crunchyroll tends to do with their simuldubs. I don't want to have to deal with what are essentially closed captions if I'm not deaf.

Quite cute, but their new travelling companion is just way too convenient.

I was looking forward to the culinary fails as much as anything.

Nice that dying is just a temporary inconvenience, I was a bit taken aback at how casually they treated the death of Falin

This feels really weird...anime really loves to get pedantic about cooking, but throw in the fact that they are basically fighting for their lives and racing against time to save his sister, they seem far too matter of fact about their journey.

Episode 2

The party makes roast chicken out of a basilisk that consists of a bird and a snake, two heads, but still one body. Then they need some veggies and pulling mandrakes is quite dangerous. But Marcille insists on doing things by the book using a dog to pull it, and resorts to using a giant bat, which means sacrificing the bat to do it. That proves to be a mistake, but Marcille managed to recover from the mandrake's screech. Then Chilchuck puts his ability to disarm traps to use to get them some olive oil to make mandrake kakiage and big bat tempura. Senshi continues to be quite resourceful with food there, and it's pretty amusing to see just how these monsters can become food. Marcille and Chilchuck have quite a lot to learn when it comes to all that.

Marcille wants to show everyone she can be useful, but her by-the-book method of harvesting mandrakes almost backfires on her. It was silly hearing her talk in a deadpan tone while she was recovering from the screech. But it turns out her harvesting method actually resulted in a more delectable dish in the end. Then it's Chilchuck's time to shine as Senshi has him use traps as kitchen implements to cook another dish.

The party comes across a hallway where the armors are alive, and they move to block the party from getting to the door on the other end. Laios sneaks through and meets a living armor that's much stronger than the others. While dighting it, Laios sees an egg case on its shield that has him believing that there's something living inside of the armor. It turns out there's a bunch of those mollusk creatures that together are moving those armors. After finding out that those "living" armors are just a bunch of clams that they cook and eat them. I didn't think they would find something to eat seeing that armor is mostly metal, but they managed to make a meal out of the monsters moving them, all while Laios has a new sword to wield.

That was real weird finding out how those sets of living armor move around. Plus, this is the first time Senshi has cooked something resembling clams or oysters, but it turned out all right. Now Laios has a new sword to replace the one that broke, but it seems it too has a shellfish-like creature within it.

Episode 4

It's off to the third floor to an abandoned palace where it's infested with golems and while they are almost all dirt, there's plenty of vegetation that grows on them as there's plenty of fertilizer in them. Senshi has been using them as a veggie garden and they keep the monsters below from coming up. Then the orcs from the lower floors come up and start attacking the adventurers hanging out at the hidden tavern, and Senshi agrees to let them have the food there in exchange flor being allowed to go down to their village where he cooks a great meal for them, making bread and veggies. The orcs may have been nothing more than bandits, but they deserve to live in peace rather than being slaughtered by the humans and elves, at least those in the village. This goes to show what great food can do.

Kabru's party is enjoying a great meal back in town before heading into the dungeon. They go into the dungeon and think they have struck it rich, but those treasure turns out to be bugs with the appearance of coins and other treasures as they get wiped out. On the other hand, for Senshi these treasure bugs make for some highly nutritious meals. Then they encounter ghosts and without Falin around, they have nobody to exorcise the ghosts. But thanks to Senshi he has holy water whipped up on the spot. And thus, they turn those ghosts into sorbet, something they wouldn't enjoy with Falin around. Senshi continues to find more things to eat in the dungeon, and it's too bad Kabru's party won't get to experience it.

I've heard of monsters mimicking treasure chests, but these insects that look like coins and jewelry take it to a whole new level. But like any insects, these treasure bugs are rich in protein, and Chilchuck has actually eaten coin bugs before. Plus, the creature in Laios's new sword can react to threats. Then the party encounters a bunch of ghosts, which brings them to the sobering truth that they need to push on forward without Falin's help. Fortunately, Senshi makes his own take on holy water and attacks the ghosts with it. The ghosts chill the holy water, turning it into sorbet. I wonder if eating this will act as some kind of ghost repellant.

Don't you, you know, turn into a ghost when you die? Couldn't you just possess your own body and move it somewhere it's easy to discover?

What are people doing while waiting for a rez? I assume they are not moving on to the afterlife because then they wouldn't come back when revived. So they have got to just be hanging out and waiting. What's the cut off time for a revive? 1 day? 1 week? 1 month? They don't seem to be in a hurry at all to retrieve Falin so it must be a long time. Does the ghost just hang around until the expiration date than move on? So they basically die twice to really die?

I'm guessing that someone's body has to be completely destroyed before they become a ghost. Once the body is destroyed they would either move on or cling to the material world as a ghost. That's my theory anyway. Falin's body is still being digested by the dragon so not a ghost yet. No resurrection once the body is destroyed.

When they saw those adventurers were dead but had no obvious marks on them I'm not sure how they wouldn't immediately think of poison. Kind of the obvious conclusion in that situation. I really wasn't expecting them to show us that party and then kill them off like that. This show is usually so cheery.

Laios goes into those paintings wanting to eat the food in them, but his first time in he was in too much of a foul mood to eat. Second time, it's at a wedding reception, but he couldn't eat there and takes some food with him, which disappears when he returns. Then he has a fancy dinner at the coronation ceremony, but that same guy who saw him entering the first two times knew he was an outsider, and upon returning he's hungry again, going to show that it was a bad idea eating inside those paintings. Then Chilchuck finds himself in a bind after being tricked by a treasure bug and attacked by a mimic. But after figuring it out, he not only gets out of the trapped room, he catches the party a mimic crab to eat. This party just keeps on finding creative ways to eat as there's plenty of food to be found in the most unexpected of places.

Kabru's party wakes up, but somebody who had been watching them and knows what happened used this opportunity to extort them. Laios and party comes across a lake full of wildlife with plenty of seafood in it. Senshi cuts up a horse after being forced to kill it when it attacks. And then Laios finds some fish eggs and whips up a meal with the barley found near some dead adventurers, all while Marcille takes the fat of that dead horse and uses it to make soap which also allows the party to walk on water. Marcille kills a bunch of bladefish with her explosion spell, but them comes a giant kraken that disrupts the ecosystem by eating the fishmen that eat the bladefishes. Afterwards, the party cooks up part of the kraken and Laios consumes a parasite that gives him an upset stomach. Hard to believe seafood could be found in the dungeon, but there it is, and Marcille really came through making that soap that allows the party to float.

Laios's party reach an underground lake, where quite a few things happen. First, Senshi is forced to kill a kelpie that he thought he befriended a while ago after it tries to drown him while riding on its back. Then, Laios and Chilchuck find Kabru's party again. Evidently, they were merely paralyzed from the Treasure Insects, and after following the trail of Laios's party, they somehow got ahead of them and got wiped out again. So Laios and Chilchuck take some barley floating around their floating bodies and use it to cook a meal. This has got to become some kind of running gag.

Finally, Laios's group become part of the dungeon's ecological cycle when they take down a really huge kraken. But when Laios tries to eat it raw, he ends up consuming a parasite that ravages his stomach. Senshi shouldn't have to worry too much about disrupting the cycle of life down here, even though he has a point about doing things in moderation.

Marcille's background is explained as she was the top of her class during her magic school days, and she met Falin in school. But while they were both skilled mages, they couldn't be any more different in the way they approach things as Marcille is the cautious type, while Falin is more adventurous. They quickly became friends, and that's how they ended up in the same party. And then Marcille gets herself in trouble as she's attacked by the water and is running low on mana, all she can do is launch herself out of her water and to safety on the shore. While her mana level needs to be recharged, Senshi's grilled meat feast really brings her back to life, while also catching the attention of another party of adventurers who caught the smell of it. Nice story about Marcille there, but now they will need to get by without her for awhile, and then there's another party who wants to eat what Senshi is cooking as well.

The party who caught a sniff of the meal is led by Namari, a tomboy dwarf who Laios previously adventured with. They have a healer in the party that can fix Marcille up, but they aren't going to do it for free, and not to mention in this dungeon death isn't permanent unlike outside of it. Laios helps out and gets caught by a bunch of tree tentacles, and Laios has Namari use a crossbow to save them, all while Senshi finds yet another ingredient in the tentacles. And then Marcille decides to drink the undine to recover her mana with Senshi and Namari trapping it and boiling it over an open flame to defeat it, and Marcille uses the undine water to make stew where she regains some of her mana. While Namari could continue on with Laios and company, Laios understands that Namari has money to make, so they part ways. Namari made quite the impression there as while she's brash, she's a great fighter who can use weapons she has never wielded before like that crossbow.

Namari has joined a researcher family, and the patriarch, Tansu, has no problem in using her as a shield. Tansu is also the family's resident healer, but as Laios's group suspected, he won't help restoring Marcille's mana for free. So Laios agrees to help Tansu with his research, when they get caught dealing with some ivy tentacles, which Laios's group then try eating like a banana. Then Marcille suggests she drink the Undine that injured her to restore her magic, and Namari and Senshi use Senshi's shield-grade pot and lid to trap and boil it, after which Marcille makes a stew.

So the dungeon has an interesting mechanic that essentially won't allow people to die, which is also what makes resurrection within the dungeon possible. It's less like death isn't permanent and more like adventurers pass out after taking too much damage.

Starting to understand why this is popular, have to admire the author for coming up with a biological basis for all these common dungeon monsters and then inventing a plausible way to cook and eat them. No way I thought they would find a way to catch and eat a ball of water the shoots bullet like jets of water.
Also glad they finally explained why no one dies and can be resurrected. Makes Senshi that much more impressive given how long he has been in the dungeon without needing to be brought back to life.

Unfortunately, dropping the bridge on the dragon's head didn't slow it one bit, and Laios's idea of playing dead to get out of that pinch would have worked if his sword hadn't shaken itself out of his hands. Fortunately, Chilchuck manages to blind the dragon's left eye with Senshi's mithril knife, giving Laios an opening to reach its weak spot, though it cost him his leg. But Marcille reattaches it with her magic.

Good news: this was the same dragon that ate Falin. Bad news: it looks like she's already been digested. Even if her soul is bound to her body in the dungeon, how can they fix it up from this state? And how is Laios going to explain his living sword to Chilchuck?
