Japanese fans started discussing the chapter and it seems that the chapter is about "healing Taichi" through Chihaya's & Arata's acknowledgement and the help they get from his card.
Shinobu seems to have thought about the relationship of the two cards: CHIHA & TACHI which are written by brothers,
Taichi did not come to the imaginary club room but entered the Urayasu room & upon seeing him, Chihaya thought that "she was always so close to Taichi all the time"
So Chihaya & even Arata kept "TACHI" in their sides and sent SE instead, in the luck of the draw, a player should send the card they think won't get read and despite the fact that Arata treasures SE, it seems that he understood from Suo that SE won't be read.
And effectively, TACHI was read and both took it and won their titles as if to say that Taichi was also there when Arata & Chihaya decided to become Meijin/Queen respectively, and this is Taichi's blessing to them in some sort.
So officially, Shinobu & Suo lost.
Two of sensei's colored illustrations of the main cast of Chihayafuru were also included in the magazine alongside with some messages:
Suetsugu sensei also shared this NOTE, an interesting one where I personally understood why she decided to give Taichi an important moment near the end and we are again reminded of her old tweet about the 3 types of Horror which we posted about before HERE
I'll quote these parts from the note which I find elightning:
"The master of horror, Stephen King, says. The "enemy" in horror can be classified into three types.
• Dracula (an enemy that comes from the outside)
• Frankenstein (the enemy that created you)
• Jekyll and Hyde (the enemy that is inside you).
For Chihaya, her rival Shigenobu is Dracula (an enemy that comes from the outside),
for Arata, his grandfather is Frankenstein (an enemy that he created ),
and for Taichi, his past self is Hyde (an enemy that is inside him).
The enemy for everyone is probably one of these too.
We have spent 50 volumes describing how to overcome each "enemy".
Believing that there is a battle that can make even our enemies happy.
Those of you who have followed along with me through the series so far will know what I mean.
.......
Stephen King also says.
'I make horror to help people come to terms with the horrors of reality.'
I would say to my own work.
I make manga to help people find a place for their passions in reality.
Chihayafuru is a story about passion. It is a story about those who have found something irreplaceable and those who cannot have it.
It is not a story about how difficult it is to find such passion in the real world, so we can watch the struggle in a fictional world.
It is about shaking up the child in your heart, the child who is in a deep sleep. Give me the chance to teach you that your name is passion."
The latest issue of Belove arrived at my house a day early, and my family, having read it last night, rushes to my bed and says, "How often do you hear that this is the end of volume 49? "How could you think this is going to end at 49 volumes! It ain't over at all! But you're a genius!"
I wish that were the case. I just want to get it to you.
This article talks about the end of Chihayafuru
it mentions the release date: August 1.
A special colored poster
an article commemorating the end,
and congratulatory messages from the casts of the anime "Chihayafuru" and the movie "Chihayafuru."
in addition to 80 pages said to be dedicated for this final chapter. Some wondered if this is about the last chapter alone or the chapter plus the spin offs sensei promised to draw, but we already have 246 with 47 pages, if we add 80 pages we get a total of 127 pages which seems few for the final volume. So the 80 pages are most likely for the last chapter alone until the opposite is confirmed.
And in ths same article, we find the cover of volume 49
Sensei streamed the process of signing the special edition of vol49, once again 1000 copies, autographed with a message and some of them also have illustrations of some characters
The archive of the streaming is here for anyone who wants to see it.
She finished the signing now and Chihaya is her last illustration as she said in a tweet.
The poem chosen for this volume is "49/Mikakimori"
and the special use during the events of the volume is in chapter 245
when Arata took it to make Suo finally take back his words from back when he told him that he doesn't find his karuta exciting.
According to this TWEET, Suetsugu sensei commented on a fan who mentioned Chihaya's illustration and the lotus flowers in her hair and said that she initially wanted to use that illsutration (with the lotus flowers) as the cover of volume 49 (which was supposed to be the last volume)
but after realizing that there will be another volume and after considering Taichi's role in the second half of volume 49, she decided to draw him for the cover.
Can we deduce then that for volume 50, the cover will be a solo Chihaya illustration?
After struggling a bit with the NAME of the last chapter, then submitting it ad getting approved right away, she tweeted again a few hours ago to announce the completion of the MANUSCRIPT which is the final draft made by the manga artist which is handed to the magazine in order to publish it concluding with this the manga she started drawing 15 years ago!
This is a big deal, Oricon published the news already and reminded everyone of the chapter will be 80 pages, it will feature the cover, a special color poster and an article commemorating the final story, as well as congratulatory messages from the cast of the anime "Chihayafuru" and the movie "Chihayafuru"
Sensei said that it was so much fun for these 15 years.
Both Tsutaya bookstores (paper books) & BookLog (an online book review community featuring a bookshelf interface that allows users to display books, CDs, DVDs and other items) have announced the best selling/reveiewed books in the week between July 10 & July 17, (Tsutaya: 11-->17 July & Booklog: 10--> 16 July) and Chihayafuru volume 49 ranks 5th for Tsutaya and 1st in Booklog's list of best circulating books !
A long running series with a monthly release schedule seems to be hard to recover despite the announcement of it's approaching end.
After a recovery of 13.13% made by volume 48 compared to vol47, the recent volume (49) is down by 6.7% in its first 5 days after it was estimated to sell 100k copies.
This article shares a chart, and mentions that manga revenues in general dropped for the second week of July for almost all series which explains the low sale numbers despite having Chihayafuru in the 5th spot.
Suetsugu sensei decided to gift the 4 winning schools in the national karuta tournament that took place yesterday July 23 a new autographed illustration featuring Chihaya, Arata & Taichi in a pose that looks similar to the hug we got on ch246, like a teenager-version (I kind of see this happening in the next chapter.)
So could the colored illustration we are promised to get with the last chapter actually be this one?
"Chihayafuru" by Yuki Suetsugu is on cover of the upcoming Be Love issue 9/2022 to celebrate its last chapter.
On the cover it says: "The last chapter"
and there is mention of 81 pages (maybe the 81st is the chapter cover?)
These are the illustrations that sensei shared while counting down alongside fans waiting for the last chapter of Chihayafuru
For each character, she seems to have made them confess what they truly wanted either in the whole manga or at least the last arc using panels taken from this last.
I'll probably add the next ones as sensei tweets them
