What a moronic argument. Why are so many threads on this site filled with bullshit like this?

But seriously, a chess anime would work so long as it was really just about the characters in the club. Bamboo Blade isn't really about kendo, you know.

I think there is none. There are a few that have references or even chess battles but none of them are actually about chess.

I couldn't help but smirk when I read that some people consider chess to be "one dimensional". It may appear to be so but you could also consider that most of the games are indeed shallow while looking at them from a certain perspective.

Somehow the book l'Argent written by Emil Zola comes to my mind. It isn't about playing chess or anything but about stock exchange and the administration of a bank. That is in my opinion something very shallow but Zola wrote a book that is a masterpiece and yet still very technical and detailed.

Anime is the same you can even make an anime about making bread why wouldn't you be able to make anime about chess. I mean Kasparov's games are for example extremely intense.

The comedy just writes itself. I didn't write anything about "charachters", whatever the hell that is, or even "characters", for that matter. Read that post again. It's solely about the difficulty of presenting an intrinsically challenging, time intensive game like chess in a manner that a casual viewer, who could give a fuck less about all that, can understand and appreciate.

You're comparing a hypothetical anime about chess, which takes thousands of hours of practice and study to understand at a championship level, to an anime about BOXING, which even a four year old can understand a world championship match as punching the other guy before he punches you?!

...*facepalm*
First of all, it's quite easy to typo "Characters" like that. If this was a real argument, would you start calling him out on something if his tongue slipped and he pronounced something oddly? It's a stupid and distracts from the subject at hand. You've constantly been picking on/insulting Monad's spelling and grammar and even questioning their age... Rather than making points for the argument at hand. Nice.

Secondly, you're completely missing his point - He's NOT comparing Boxing to Chess! He's just saying that an anime about chess doesn't solely have to feature the game, it would still have characters and interactions between characters!

I think the major difficulty in finding or producing an anime about international chess would be its relative popularity in Japan compared to similar strategic and tactical board games. Up until the 19th century only the Emperor and Japanese nobility were allowed to play games like Shougi and Go, and noble families even had their own style of play and skills like Martial Artists. Thus, these games are in many ways viewed as high-brow scholarly pursuits. You'd be hard pressed to muscle out that kind of competition.

It could be reasonably done, however, were there to be enough interest

Complexity of high level play aside, I would tend to think that these types of shows would potentially garner a great deal of interest from children and young adults (even adults) in a game itself.

The shows don't have to be about championship level play, they can be about beginners' level and challenges between newcomers who are actively learning about the game (and thus the audience along with them).

Being involved competitively in just about any area- grades, sports, and yes even games of strategy is encouraged by Japanese culture as a respectable activity. Using relate-able characters, tension, and drama to generate interest in these activities seems natural, and I'm sure many a person has been drawn to learn more about a new pursuit as a result of a show or movie.

The point of any commercially televised show is first and foremost to be entertaining (so as to make money). But, that doesn't mean that you can't make a show about cooking bread, playing Shougi or the Piano, or even learning about Bacteria- fun. If it inspires people to learn or try new things so that later they may come to better appreciate the complexities of everything that happened in the show, that's not so bad, is it?

Are these just games? Maybe. Although many of these types of games facilitate the improvement of logic and reasoning skills, memory and concentration, as well as decision making skills which is really to the detriment of no one. Those are easily quantifiable skills, but playing games competitively or for fun with others also engenders confidence and improves social skills.

Needless to say, the skills obtained from playing these games have immensely valuable applications in every day life (and health benefits)! If the person find themselves truly passionate about a game, that's just icing and cherries on a priceless cake.

No Game No Life.
Chess plays a role in the first 4 episodes and will play a bigger role if we ever get a season 2.

Durarara - Chess and a mix of Shouji and Othello are used by Izaya to play his own version of the game.

I haven't noticed any anime solely about chess, and all the anime that I have seen that have chess in them have been "Trash Chess", fake chess games consisting of randomly arranged pieces and obvious disobeying of rules. As a USCF 1600 rated player, I find it horribly insulting.

Lelouch: If a king doesn't lead, how can he expect his subordinates to follow?
Well, Lelouch, you are allegedly an amazing chess player, and maybe everyone in Britannia plays some weird alternate universe variant, but it's the rules. Chess doesn't work that way. Lead with your king and you won't be able to castle. You lose if your opponent is at all decent. Also, go read up on opposition.

Ciel Phantomhive, you don't know the rules either. What is wrong with you? PAWNS DON"T WORK LIKE THAT. YA CHEATER.

Even the chess in FMAB was fake. So was the chess in Maid-sama! Can't Japan just find somebody who knows the rules?

(Sorry, but I needed to vent my rage somewhere, and if you are a real chess player, you will understand.)

Hikari No Go is about Shogi which is like chess. I would also like to play you in chess so that I may crush you.

Hikaru no Go is about Go...not shougi. Great series by the way.
Shion no Ou is about shougi, but I haven't seen it.
And Akagi, Saki, and Legendary Gambler Tetsuya are about mahjong.

Those are about all the series I know of about board games. None are chess, but I believe shougi is very similar to chess.

Shion No Ou is one of my favourites! Does anyone want to play a game of chess on chess.com?
