I've been goin around acquiring this anime and that, and though some were exceedingly good, none have really fit the bill of what i'm looking for.
If you dont like to read, should probably skip to the bottom, i'll say exactly some of what i'm looking for, but first i'll give an explanation of some of what i've seen recently and my feelings twords them.

GITS and Cowboy Bepop are my top two favs of all time, and i've been looking for other anime with similar looks/feels. They both put futuristic and scifi in a very believable atmosphere, nothing that should have been felt unexplainable. Cloaking, Spaceships, badass guns and thinktanks... Nothing felt out of place, which is a problem i've seen in alot of similar themed animes...

The characters make a good show, imo, but what i'm looking for first is the setting. Any good anime will have great characters, but its theme i'm after ATM. That nice, badass spacepunk scene, with space fights, or a darker future with cybernetics and advanced technologies.

I've seen Appleseed, which was pretty badass. Probably the only cyberpunk i've seen that was as good as GITS... probably because i think the same person made them...

Im watching outlaw star ATM, great anime but though i've just started, i feel its a tad lacking in the believable feel department. I think its the atmosphere it sets mostly. The main char is a badass who uses his head (not wtf powers/gadgets, those can ruin an entire anime for me) and so far its pretty good but i'm not 100% digging the space animation, its super jumpy and you dont really see anything, and its a bit corny at times (not that its a bad thing, just not what i was lookin for)

Darker than Black was pretty kickin too. Liked the characters, though i felt a little empty on the character development, and needed more supernatural phenomenon, it could have been a VERY creepy anime but just wasnt. Still, again, mostly very believable, and cool characters. Any other anime's like this, that have supernatural occurrences and good action?

I'd slap xxxHolic up there with Darker than Black tbh, save the action and and seriousness. Obviously less believable but the characters made up for it. Again, could have been way creepier but wasnt. Would be cool to see an anime that would leave you with that creeped out feeling...

Soul Eater was cool, even though i watched it mostly for the characters... This TBH was one of those animes i'd usually not like, but it for some reason fell in with my good favor. The characters were pretty cool, though their unchanging habits made more then a couple 120% obnoxious... like Black Star... i wanted to strangle the kid. Was almost glad when i thought he died and was disappointed when he got back up... Which reminds me... Did no one important die in that ENTIRE anime? lot of "OMG I'M DEAD!!! loljkjk..." if you ask me. Also, people tended to pull super powers out the wazoo every time they got in trouble, rather then using their witts... And the way it looked wasnt that real feel i usually prefer (like GITS, Cowboy bebop, Darker than Black). Also i'd give it a bad score on the believable factor, since it could obviously never happen. Still liked it... though i doubt i could tell you why...

I stopped watching desert punk... The main was an irritating bastard who couldnt get tits off the mind long enough to get work done, and OF COURSE he got obliterated but still won. If the main wasnt so irritating in this regard i'd probably like it. He was badass and smart in a fight, and the theme was excellent. Again, the look and cornyness i dont dig so much. Also, if the main makes obliviously stupid mistakes for dumb reasons, like blows an incredibly well set plan because he stopped to play some grabass half way... 100% kills it for me... Soul Eater had this effect early on, and i nearly dropped it too.

Freedom had an amazing storyline... I didnt dig it at first but it grew on me, and it became very emotional and moving, which is increasingly rare for me in an anime. Few times i felt like tearin up, which doesnt happen much. Good set, liked the story, liked the setting, characters were good and animation was on point. Kids for characters doesnt always click with me, but that was easilly passable.

Sorry for this... but I DID NOT LIKE AKIRA... i know some people really get a hard onfor this but i found it annoying. The bratty main character kids, it was old so the animation wasnt enjoyable for me, the voice acting was terribad... The way they presented the psychic powers just erked me... No explanation just "oh yea they got em" and it didnt seem to fit. Did okay for realisim but i just couldnt believe in it. Too many things killed my immersion...

I feel thats a pretty decent list of what i've watched, and what i liked and didnt like...

Okay, with that out of the way, perhaps enough to get a window of what i like and dont like, a few themes of what i've been looking for.

(like xxxHolic/Darker than Black)
An anime with a (maybe dark) supernatural theme. It should have action, and i'd like to see something creepy. Above all, if its not believable it'll break the immersion. It should have things that just happen, and you dont know why, but it shouldnt leave you in the dark about everything.

(Like GitS)
An anime with a futuristic cyberpunk theme. To me, this is gana HAVE to have some decent, high tech action (but not too over done, like ALWAYS rollin in with and blowin up tonsa mechs and robots, theyre expensive ya know so why would you toss em like that). Gits got me how they rationed the heavy armor to when they NEEDED it, and usually geared up personnel. It should have a believable and a foreseeable theme.

(Like Cowboy Bebop)
Spacepunk Action... I admit, i love space combat. The chaotic 360³ lethal combat with all sorts of weapons, from lasers to missiles, and ballistics. Cowboy bebop got this just right imo, even though they spent alot of time on land but it was still good. As i said, Outlaw Star did it injustice by being too jumpy in space fights, kinda left me with a confused feel. Couldnt ever track what was happening in the fights.

Again, if it just included alot of time on a starship, thats cool too. I just wana see more space related storylines. Of course, if it doesnt have a level of realism, how can you believe in it?

Above all, if the realism goes below a certain point, i probably wont enjoy it. Its what kicked me so much about GITS and Cowboy bebop, is how they put so much thought into the setting to make sure it was fleshed out and believable. More so in GITS, you knew the writer thought "would they be able to do that in this setting, and if so how and why" and then conveyed that it was both realistic and possible. I loved that feeling, especially in a cyberpunk, but it could be in anything.

As Naruto once said, BELIEVE IT!!! ... (then i punched him in the face for wearing orange)

Sorry for the long post, but thanks for any help.

You can try Macross Plus as it has many similarities in character designs as Bebop(Watanabe worked on this a bit) and does have a sci-fi setting but is more focused on romance and relationships rather than action.

For sci-fi settings, I would recommend Legend of the Galactic Heroes, it is old but the show is very engaging(so engaging that I recommend it while still watching it) it has space battles, drama, almost anything you could ask for

Escaflowne has a more steampunk feel in a fantasy world, but should definitely be watched for its soundtrack, battles and characters

I could go on and on but I made little notes about each anime I have watched so far so maybe something in there will give you some interest

So, you prefer more character-centeric anime with a consistent and well-explained supernatural/sci-fi setting. You don't like it when none of the characters die, nor do you like it when they just die and then "get better." The characters should also be fairly mature emotionally and intellectually and not be whiny/overpowered like they are in most shounens.

(like xxxHolic/Darker than Black)
Blood+
Kara no Kyoukai movies
Tsukihime- somewhat suffers from being a 12 episode anime based on a 50+ hour VN but still have the consistent supernatural setting
Elfen Lied

(Like Cowboy Bebop)
Crest of the Stars
Planetes-You aren't going to find a more reastic sci-fi than Planetes

Starship Operators. More than anything else. The characters lack individual development, but the space combat is my personal favorite.

Otherwise, you've lots of options so early on, so pick and choose. It should be easy to figure out which ones are supernatural, space and cyberpunk.

Baccano!
Boogiepop Phantom
Paranoia Agent
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Dennou Coil
Flag
Ghost Hound
Mononoke
Wings of Honneamise
Crest/Banner of the Stars
Toward the Terra
Gunslinger Girl

Wow, thanks guys for the quick, and be it surprisingly helpful responses (not used to good first encounters on forums). Great suggestions all of them, more then 90% are new to me so no shortage of options to choose form there. Thanks a ton!

Lol yeah you nailed me pretty good there. Not that i havnt enjoyed Bleach and DBZ, but as far as dieing and then getting better... im hard pressed to name two better ones (in both, i know atleast SOME ONE literally died, and came back) and it drives me nuts... Oh yeah, and thanks for the links, made things much easier, not that i'm ignoring any other suggestions. Ergo Proxy looks pretty kickin... I'll probably have at least previewed most of them soon enough...

Once more, thanks!

EDIT:

I forgot to mention in my original post... I generally dont like to read what i'm watching, so English dubbed anime's are preferable. I tend not to trust the subs, and as i said, i dont like reading what i'm watching, i find it distracting from whats goin on.

Some good suggestions already above.

If you try Flag, as senerikfred suggested, and like it, you could also try Gasaraki, which is in some ways quite similar, but probably more flawed (it's very slow-moving and talky, and some people find the supernatural elements don't gel well). It can be found dubbed.

In the dark/action/supernatural vein of Darker than Black, you could try The Skull Man, which starts off as a fairly slow-burning mystery and gradually becomes a bit more action-packed towards the end. The setting's quite an interesting alternate-history city-state within twentieth-century Japan, if my memory serves me right. Not sure if this has been dubbed, or even if it's been licensed.

Have you watched the Ghost in the Shell movies? You might also be interested in the first two Patlabor movies (the Patlabor OVAs and TV series are -- while in my view still excellent -- more light-hearted and a bit less cyberpunk-y).

Anyway, hope these help, and even if they don't, good luck in your search!

Legend of the Galactic Heroes sounds REAL good tbh. Unfortunatly its only in Japanese, but i might go ahead and check it out anyway, with so many recommendations toward it.

And i've seen one of the GITS movies, it was pretty good. I actually own a disk of Gasaraki, which i picked up at random from when the old rental shop back where i was closed... Was an anime, so i grabbed it up. Thought it was pretty interesting, but didnt get a feel for it since i picked up a middle disk...

On the flipside, Flag, a show about a photographer... not sure how interesting that could be... but i'll give it another look.

Flag's protagonist is a photographer, but most of the main cast are soldiers that she is documenting. There is action, if not in every episode.
