Simply mention both the best and worst manga/manhwa translation from a publisher/distributor. You can either praise/criticize a publisher as a whole, or just a specific series.
Best: I have yet to find a very good one worth mentioning. Vagabond, maybe?
Worst: Parasyte (from TokyoPOP) It's what made me drop it in the first place. I still have the original one. They 'reversed' the manga so you could read it from left to right and that made some things difficult.
Just a minor spoiler...
They re-named the alien from 'Migi' (Which is 'right' in Japanese, he lives in the main character's right hand) to 'Lefty' because of the 'flipping'.
One of the best: Banana Fish, I just wish to god someone had ran some of the volumes through the spell check, every so often you get a misspelled word, just enough to piss you off.
lol @ Tokyopop Parasyte, I've seen the back cover of it, it's hilarious. And the "snake" edit. Luckily, I've only read the Del Rey translation, I've just seen bits and pieces of the TP one. At least TP got better, they do have some pretty nice translations from their heyday (Kodocha for example).
I'm actually not that big on Del Rey as a whole, I think they tend to sound a bit...stiff to me
Viz as a whole is awesome, from what I've read, I like Yen Press and CMX too. But right now no one beats Viz if you ask me.
I've some misspelled words and bad grammar but nothing will escape my head like one page of O Parts Hunter aka 666 Satan.
They missed an entire page of dialogue. The bubbles are there, but there are no words at all. Ugh.
Also, they'll change the spelling of names. Gai-sensei was Gai-sensei for a while in Naruto until they decided to make it Guy-sensei. It's just seemed silly to change it to me.
How long would it take to earn 50 million yen, Karasawa? - Katsuya
No longer than it would take to get to the bank, provided I have a gun. -Karasawa
I'm through talking with you. -Katsuya
I think any thing Tokyo Pop touches turns into shit. Battle Royal for example, every male character sounded like a cross between 50 cent and Samuel L Jackson. I actually saw Tokyo Pop use the phrase "Slow your roll" in a manwhua and it made me want to stab a baby.
It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it doesn't laugh or cry..... All it does from dusk till dawn is make the soldiers die.
EDIT: ...Believe it or not, but I've just now noticed that this topic is in the manga discussion board. Bah, I'm in no mood to delete this thing so if you don't care about anime translations' mistakes in Poland, don't read it.
1) To start with, the biggest mishap ever made in Poland regarding translating anime: Sailor Moon.
Usagi seems like a nice enough name, shame they didn't like it here - she runs around named Bunny(!). Apart from that, you would think that the title "Sailor Moon" shouldn't really be translated as "Sorceress from the Moon", wouldn't you? While we are at it, all girls were christened "Sorceress from the X" apart from Sailor Starlights: Sailor Star Fighter -> Stellar Sorceress of War; Sailor Star Maker -> Stellar Sorceress of Salvation; Sailor Star Healer -> Stellar Sorceress of Freedom. Going from there Witches 5 -> House of 5 Witches; Hawk's Eye -> Falcon's Eye; Sailor Lead Crow -> Fiery Sorceress(!!!); "XX make up" (during transformation) -> act / change me / help in need(!).
Then we have the ever present spell translations: Silver Moon Crystal Power Kiss -> Healing Power of Moony Kiss; Shabon Spray -> Soap, Jam (seriously, wtf? - "Mydło, powidło"??) and its upgraded form, Shabon Spray Freezing -> Soap, Jam, Ice! Then we hear Shine Aqua Illusion -> Sparkly Water Will Strengthen Me (!!); Fire Soul -> Might of Fire Work/Act; Supreme Thunder and Sparkling Wide Pressure both became one spell named "Storm and Lightning, come to my aid"; Jupiter Oak Evolution -> Oaks' Revolution (yeah, seriously, all oaks rebelled in our translation); Space Sword Blaster -> Deadly Dagger; Pink Sugar Heart Attack -> Moony Pearls, Pink Candies; Star Gentle Uterus -> Star Attack.
Sailor Venus' spells deserve a separate post, but I will only mention that in Poland Crescent Beam became "Pea, Bean" and its upgrade Crescent Beam Shower changed to "Pea, Bean, Strong Will", because the person translating thought that "beam" and "bean" are the same word (and it rhymes in Polish - "Groch, fasola, silna wola"). You can imagine how it looks like when in the middle of the fight Sailor Venus jumps up and starts shouting about bean and peas while waving her hands... Of course there were many more translation mistakes in Sailor Moon, but I only mentioned the most annoying ones.
2) Second biggest Polish mistake (imho) - Naruto.
Apart from the dumbest version of "Dattebayo!" in the world ("Kumalski" can't really be translated to English... "capishe" seems closest, but it doesn't really reflect translator's stupidity), lack of blood (screen will go all black, or scene will change to a different point of view so that you won't see a red drop, even if it's Sasuke turned hedgehog or Naruto without a lung that is shown) and idiotic names (I can't put up English pronunciation, but Polish readers will know what I mean when mentioning Chodżi, Neji and Hiuga) we have a translator who doesn't see a difference between Clone Jutsu and Shadow Clone Jutsu - both of them got the same translation. To quote from diff-anime.pl: "I'd hazard a guess that Eurocom studio couldn't get their hands on a Japanese translator so they translated English subtitles to Polish." Of course dubbing also sucks (one more scream from Polish Sakura and I will go NUTS!), but this topic is about translations.
3) Various name-translation mistakes like in Dragon Ball, in which Vegeta calls Goku "Kakarotto" (his name) and we've got it "translated" into "Moron", or "Piccolo" who became "Szatan Serduszko" ("Heart Satan"?).
Generally, I avoid Polish dubbing/subtitles with passion. English subtitles are my preferable choice of translation, mainly because they are mostly accurate and leave Japanese voices intact.
Best Translations- hmmmm... I would probably pick most of the Viz Media's Shojo Beat Manga Edition which I've bought (S.A, VK, OHSHC, LdO....)
I haven't read those translations lately, so I'm not sure of they're the best
Chuang Yi comics from Singapore (It says at the back of every manga they publish that it's for distribution and sale at Singapore ONLY. But I don't live in Singapore, nor did I go there, mind you. I bought it at our bookstore.xD) has a pretty decent translations too
Worst Translations- Reborn! by Viz
--that was pure and epic FAIL. I saw some users who have bought that translation, most of them saying it was a disappointment. But as an avid fan of KHR I am, I bought the vol. 15 (KHR manga is rarely seen at our bookstores, so I will buy it even if the translation sucks :D).
But I would have never thought, seeing Yamamoto Takeshi with a serious face, saying "OMIGOSH!" would be a big trauma to me.
After that, Gokudera appeared in his side and agree with him.
No, it's just not that stupid scene, almost all of them are in an OOC state that you cannot recognize who and who those characters are. Their actions and words are not compatible with each other. It's like you wore a spongebob outfit, but you're in an ANIME cosplay event.
I don't have anything against Tokyo Pop, since I've got only two translations from them (Maid-sama! and Charming Junkie.... I think) and they're both okay :D
