So watched the trailer for the show today. It looks great actually but not sure why this is rated TV-MA (on amazon prime). My brother wants to watch this but i am not sure if this will be okay. Though he already has watched things like one piece, , jjk, frieren, attack on titan and chainsaw man as well (I actually advised against Chainsaw man, told you need be 16 but he watched anyways. But nothing happened to him in the end and he is all fine and things). The sexual aspect of chainsaw man wasn't gross by any means but rather something he understood when you grow up as a teenager (many people start dating at this age). One caveat, none of the shows on prime were 18+, all of them were either 13+(one piece, fairy tail, assassination classroom) or 16+ (jjk, frieren, attack on titan, chainsaw man) But dandadan is 18+, is it really that sexually graphic and explicit, to not watch it? Also note: we are asian americans, we arent prudish on sex and violence like most american families.

I mean you say non-American but it's not like every other culture is non-American. Every culture has their own take on it, so we can't answer your question for you because we don't even know your culture, and even if we did, most of us aren't FROM your culture to give any kind of insightful reply.

The show has violent themes, but it also has sexual themes. There's at least two scenes with a teenaged girl being sexually predated by adult men, including attempted r$pe.

I assume that's why the show got an 18+ rating.

@LifelineByNature Is it as graphic as kill la kill or idaten deities, because that is one of the only things not allowed in the house. Elfen lied and sao s3 is barely a pass to be honest when we watched. I hope this may give some perspective.

Also, i agree with your statement, it is hard to define what a "non-american" is. But then just assume we are more liberal on such aspects than most American families, at least to give you some context

@mg1109 No idea because I haven't watched those shows. But from what I know of Elfen Lied, you're probably ok with Dandadan if you've seen that one.

@LifelineByNature I had to argue with my parents about letting him watch that show because he already has seen shows with nudity in school (see oppenheimer and schindlers list) for his history class, elfen lied would be fine, which they agreed. But even 4 of 11 episodes of elfen lied are 16+ (rest of them are 18+ on amazon prime). The entire s1 is 18+ on amazon prime for dandadan. The manga is also rated 18+ unlike chainsaw man which is teen plus on shounen jump +. Kill la kill has more tiltilating sexual themes unlike elfen lied which is why we dont let him watch that.

Yes, Dandadan is perfectly fine for teens, the romantic moments are actually great.

@Zarutaku How graphic is the attempted rape scene? is it idaten dieties level of shit or a bit tamer like sao. (or even one piece 341, idk how that made it to the anime).

it's less extreme than chainsaw man, don't know why it's rated as more mature.

@JKKH Also about the violence from episode 7, is it also very bad like chainsaw man. (idk on youtube people were crying after watching it, maybe psychologically traumatizing?). What about the sa scene from episode 12?

Fairly graphic, but comically exaggerated.

@mg1109 Both of the sa scenes are pretty tame. the character is stripped down to underwear and held down in metal clamps (it's like an alien abduction scene) but she breaks free and nothing happens. the later scene she gets harrassed by creepy aliens at a bath house, I think they grab her legs, but she also manages to get away with nothing happening. No nudity or groping or anything like that from my memory.

Violence is also minor, no gore. just shonen fights. there's some blood. episode 7 is probably the most extreme, a woman is beaten and thrown into a mirror and gets cut up by the broken glass. it's sad but nothing worse than anything in csm

It does have some graphic violence so it's deservant of that rating, I guess it depends on what kind of content you want a 14-year-old to watch.

If you're going to imdb you can check the age certificates for different countries. In the case of dandadan it's all over the place. Interestingly, Japan puts it at 18+ according to imdb. Singapore and Malaysia do the same. The Philippines however have it at 13. Taiwan at 12. A lot of European countries have it between 14 and 16.

No, Chainsaw Man has much more serious violence than Dandadan.

It depends on each individual kid. You said your brother was fine with Chainsaw Man, then you have nothing to worry about.

Dandadan isn't gorey and it doesn't show any actual nudity, but it does have some weird sexual stuff but i'd say if you've seen south park and family guy stuff like that those are probably worse. It's not like there's anything actually bad to see, so if you're worried about nudity or gore those are not in it. But there's some questionable moments where it could be considered sexual harassment/assault but no sex or nudity

The sexual harrassment/sexual assault stuff is just a bit touchy feely, some references to buzz words like genitals and a few naughty words. That's as bad as it gets

And i'd say it's more sexual than itaden deities but without gore, chainsaw man is definitely worse too

It's shounen so yes especially if he already watched CSM, Elfen Lied and AoT of all things which they are much more graphic than Dandadan. It's weird they allowed him to watch Elfen Lied when its even seinen (target audience are adults), not sure why its an issue with Dandadan, Kill la Kill - which its PG-13 - and SAO s3 but not Elfen Lied. Elfen Lied isn't only about simple nudity, its has a lot of gore and other very violent stuff even much much more graphic than other gore shows. Also Dandadan and Kill la Kill are generally very silly shows while the others shows are the opposite. About Dandadan episode 7, people were crying since the scene was very sad, not other reason lol. In fact, it's one of the saddest backstories in Dandadan.

So yes, I think its ok for him to watch Dandadan considering the stuff he watched already. Next time, I suggest to check demographics first (shounen, seinen, josei, shoujo) rather than ratings especially when they are all over the place like Dandadan. If the Anime doesn't have demographics like SAO, then check age ratings or ask here. Thanks.

It was almost impossible to convince the parents to let him watch elfen lied. One of his friend watched it when she turned 15. She was completely unbothered by it though i think she was japanese, it would make sense she is unbothered. I told my parents its like combining schindlers list (there is genital nudity but it is not titillating) with stranger things (fun fact, elfen lied is the inspiration for stranger things). It is gorefest and horror. After 4 hours of argument, things went through. I am not sure how this will work in the case of dandadan (his friend hasn't watch that so he doesnt know), how do i explain the plot of dandadan to the parents, that is the mystery. Need help.

@Mazoy It airs 12:26 AM in morning. Most R18+ shows are aired at that time. Surprizingly, in india, uae, indonesia it is 16+. Uk is capped to 15 and same is australia though (fun fact, frieren is also 15 in uk, australia and 16 in germany like dandadan).

stil the big question is, why the fuck chainsaw man is more kids friendly than dandadan according to these age ratings (my parents are too old to look into the review of shows on internet). Also, elfen lied is rated 15 in the UK: https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Elfen-Lied-The-Complete-Collection/dp/B000RWDY40

As you can see in the images, Dandadan is 18+ while csm is 16, solo leveling is 14 and sao s3 is 13. I think amazon prime has drunk the car coolant a bit too much
