Ergo Proxy does not have any filler episodes but whatever you say. I don't like the Disney episode either for the record but it's still not a filler.

Hi 👋 I just wanted to compliment your profile picture. I rarely see anyone talking or mentioning Satoshi Kon's works anymore and I was a big fan. Way offtopic XD

Thank you, I feel extra special for getting praised by someone who registered in 2012 and has so few posts.

I hope you are still a fan of Satoshi Kon too.

Quite! The only movie I haven't touched was Perfect Blue. I largely use MAL just for organizing my lists, I'm under the impression many members are much younger than me so I don't have the desire to engage too much. 😅

I have just finished watching this myself. And my answer is yes, absolutely.

It has some rough edges and odd episodes here and there, but there's a lot to enjoy, especially if you already like atmospheric sci-fi.

I recommend giving it 3 episodes. I think those episodes set up the tone and the premise pretty well.

Even if you end up not liking it that much, I'd say it's worth a try. It does feel pretty unique and interesting, even in 2025 (or especially in 2025, you could say).

That's a strange thing to hear honestly, considering Perfect Blue is probably Kon's most popular film. Btw, the movie Black Swan shamelessly copied Perfect Blue and won an Oscar for it. The movie's director is known to copy Kon before too.

I don't see an option to spoiler tag on mobile but I was largely avoiding that one due to a certain scene. Same reason why I was a bit put off from reading Berserk. Maybe I'll attempt it again, I survived Paranoia Agent after all 😅 Yea I heard of that. Inception I think? was the movie that copied some scenes in Paprika. And the Matrix was influenced by 1995 Ghost in the Shell but I'm not sure if they did a direct copy with scenes.

What I am talking about is blatantly ripping off in this case whereas Inception and the Matrix are more on the inspired side of things. Lion King ripped off Kimba the White Lion for example too.

I understand which scene of Perfect Blue has made you avoid it but the scene is not as bad as you'd think since it's an acting scene and not the real thing. Though you are probably right about avoiding Berserk.

Btw you might find this video interesting

Watching that brought a wave of happy nostalgia and at the end I'm a little sad because I remembered Kon was working on Dreaming Machine and I don't think that movie will see the light of day. 🥲 Thank you for the video I saved it actually. 😊

I can see why you have Demon Slayer in your favorites. This anime is not meant for zoomers who love action oriented edgy stuff like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and don't want to think a lot about the story, so you are really not the target audience.

Speaking as a zoomer: I feel this post is based af. The idea that the audience needs to be spoon-fed while watching content, made for entertainment, for mature audiences, is a gross and dramatic way for people to easily shade the good show that this really is.

The bottom line is that Ergo Proxy is amazing. It captures your attention well in the beginning using a hook that is familiar. Using an epic entry enshrouded with mystery. Following the hook with only the most original story, characters, and atmosphere(I like the grungy look, what can I say)

Those of us who love this show love it because it is so original and the heroine is hot, so...

Ergo proxy has a pretty straightforward story, it just tells it in less blatant ways and intends to keep a mystery during it (also it even has a episode dedicated to exposition in regards to the broad plot). The philosophical references and names are there for aesthetic reasons (bcs is cool, like on evangelion with religion) and to make some of the things happening in the story with the characters more obvious (the gnosis terms for example, in case you look for the meaning). Not that i buy that 100%, it is pretentious as well. A lot of people pretend that it is a very complex story full of depth but in reality it is more simple than that, it is safe to say that you dont need extensive intelectual pondering to understand at all. Lain has more to it in regards to broad intricate themes but honestly even i have a straighforward view of Lain's story and i dont find that one hard to get neither, but regardless ergo proxy is not confusing overall, just intentionally obscurantist. The interactions between the characters also feel natural, even subtle. The show tries things different in some eps yet they still feel charming enough.

It is noticeably flawed but it is worth to watch it. Great atmosphere all the way through. Also has one of the best openings ever, the first seconds of Kiri still makes me feel special since i first watched it when i was 14 in 2018
