Menchi pretty much hit the nail on the head.
It makes more profit adapting the works of no name self published authors than it does insanely noteworthy authors without some special reasoning like anniversary remakes and whatnot.
Because at least in those situations you can get away with hocking overly expensive fan memorabilia.
But it's fine to do that.
They make profit, anime fans get stuff to watch over the week and maybe you might find a hidden gem.
But the fact they pretty much go for currently popular trends is saddening.

And outsourcing is another can of worms.
But if they didn't they would actually have to pay their workers what they are worth.
And your $30 anime series would probably be more like $80 and the number of shows available on streaming platforms would probably drop immensely or we would see yet another price hike in our subscription fees.

@runec

This started as a self published web novel, it was picked up by Kodansha (who has a deal with Disney), the largest publisher in Japan, who also owns stakes in Broadcasting companies. All these companies care about is having new content to repackage and sell to the masses (why Disney bought Marvel, Muppets, Star Wars etc. and Netflix throws money at anything) no use being a publisher if you have nothing to publish or a broadcaster if you have nothing to broadcast. What's easier then paying pennies for something someone already wrote, who is an amateur and so will take less than a pro (and you probably don't have to get in a bidding war with other companies over), repackagaing it as a published LN, and manga, and then turning it into a cheap anime (again as we all know the people who make anime are paid barely anything) to broadcast and make money off the commercials (or subscribers if it's a channel you pay for), plus the streaming rights?
This business model must be making them a killing because we keep getting more and more of this stuff every year. The streaming rights alone probably make every anime instantly profitable, think about it. Anime used to be only broadcast in Japan and only made money off advertising that ran during the show, now every show has a worldwide streaming audience that pays to watch it, and the cost to make it is pretty much the same ( or probably even cheaper with all the outsourcing to other Asian countries, judging by the names in the credits).

I've noticed a lot of these start as self published web novels so it must be a gold mine for them.

Well, maybe gold isn't the right word.

Geez did the staff quit on this show? It looks like 3rd graders are drawing the secondary characters. So he's beat but can get up because you threw a sword near him, that you "poured you soul into" to make by beating twice with a hammer 9_9
This is why Red Ranger is looking better and better. This and Magic Noble Liam have become unwatchable.

Episode 8: Swirls down the toilet.

First: The nun wasn't actually 'surprised' by him eating a fruit, it was an 'off' translation. It was more like, "So that's your move eh?" in a competitive game.

Second: Officially worst show of the season as far as I can tell. All the cliches ChatGPT could think of crammed into what felt like a 40-minute episode. Garbage directing all around, Light was lying there on the ground for over 10 minutes apparently while the bad guy just looked at him.

@MenchiK1

She hit it 14 times. Everything else she can do once, but for whatever awful directing drama this one had to be 14 times ...

So does she use a copper hammer?

That guy's lightning skill was so OP you'd think he would have gotten roped into working as an adventurer like Lena did as soon his ability appeared.

I'm glad they keep re-telling us what Lena is doing because I keep forgetting between episodes.

Light sure showed those guys to not underestimate anybody. While that trick where Zamdo forces his opponent to choose between death by suffocation or death by second skill fruit would have killed just about anybody else. But not Light and he now has the ability to use fire. While Monica crafted quite a piece of work, it still breaks. This goes to show how Light is so strong that not even the weapons he wields can keep up with him.

Episode 9

The attention turns to Lena now as she's looking for Dratena to locate the Wicked Dragon, who is quite a big threat to the land. But speaking her name is apparently taboo in this city as it turns out that her family used to rule the place, but thanks to Dratena's necromancy ability that her family is now in ruin. However, it gives Dratena the ability to pursue her passion, which is dancing. The one known as Flower Hat and her assistant Yuan are sent to the city to look for Dratena, and with Lena, they find where she's located as she's in a theater with Lena and Flower Hat posing as dancers to infiltrate the place and get all the information they can out of her. But Dratena isn't exactly willing to listen as at the very least she wants to perform her show before that. But given the changing situation, performing ought to be the last thing on her mind. So it's no wonder why Dratena became who she is, and she wasn't that way until she ate the skill fruit that gave her necromancy.

My guess is they will come out with some story about the nun having some sort of power of foresight and she's just using her power to try and save the world, she doesn't want to have to kill people, but sometimes it's necessary. Nevermind that she has a smile on her face as she sends assassins out to kill innocent people.

Kind of tired of these "get a random job that determines your entire path and future in life". Why can't you just pick your job or get your natural talents appraised. Anyway, after being poisoned and dying his story ends and the young girl who poisoned him lives with grief for the rest of her life...

The obviously evil nun forcing Lena to become an adventurer against her will... Yeah i wanna see her get slapped. At this point i don't care if it's for the "greater good". Putting a woman in a party with a psycho lecher and tearing her away from her own path, while also failing to even do her one job, appraise the skills people get.

Edit: I tried watching episode 3 but i couldn't make it past half way.

Episode 10

After escaping the theater, Flower Hat guides the girls to the laker where the Fairy Stone is behind this mess, and the mastermind Argos shows himself. And then Flower Hat deals with Argos himself using her skill, and while it appears to be just an investigative one, it holds a special power where she can use the magic from any book she reads. While she engages with Argos, Lena and Dratena are tasked with destroying the Fairy Stone, but seeing how much the town relies on its protection that Lena is conflicted. But in the end, she goes through with it, letting Dratena know that Lena will take full responsibility for whatever happens. But Argos has one last trick up his sleeve as he summons a Wicked Dragon. It's a good thing Flower Hat had the presence of mind to evacuate the town beforehand seeing that the city will be wrecked no matter what happens as now Lena will have to fight another Wicked Dragon. Things have become quite the mess in this town.

Wow were they saving their budget for this episode? After the last few crappy ones that was kind of a surprise. So what's this Argos' plan? With Flower Hat flip flopping every episode it's hard to figure out what is even going on in this show as far as who is good and bad. And really this is the first time Dratena realized she could use her power for good? And where did the convenient Pokemon unicorn come from? They had a little flashback but I don't remember.

I don't think she's really flip flopped. She was there to interrogate Dratena about the dragon that Dratena summoned, and she didn't have a problem knocking some heads together if they got in her way. Then in this episode, with the town under attack, she is willing to work with Dratena to turn the monsters away.

It seems to be related to the unicorn that was "trapped?" in the fairy stone in the middle of the lake. Maybe it is some sort of avatar of that unicorn. I am guessing it knew the Argos guy was trying to corrupt the fairy stone or something so went to try and get help in town or something.

Episode 11

Dratena shows that she can fight, and while she held her ground for awhile against a strong enemy, that Wicked Dragon was just too much for her. But then Lena gets blessed by the fairies and becomes one herself to take down Argos and that dragon. That transformation was something there, though the battle was anticlimactic to say the least. So with that, Dratena is now an ally as she has a friend she can count on in Lena. While that's going on, Monica is being told that it would be for the best to go on a journey of her own. One more episode left to go.

Well that was incredible. Incredibly bad. Sure, just fly up and slap the bad guy on the cheek with your sword. I mean, why chop his head off when you can do something that will have no real effect on the fight at all?

Episode 12 (Finale)

And to end this, the unicorn Syrondoros inside the Fairy Stone has been freed after Lena defeated the Wicked Dragon to save Athena, as well as the guy guarding it. But before the fairy guardian is sent off, Lena and Dratena dance with Lena only doing once cycle before letting Dratena take the stage by herself with the town watching her. After that, Flower Hat reveals the truth about the Holy Sister in that her appraisal skill is actually a precognition skill, and that the Wicked Dragon incidents are part of her grand scheme, which is to eliminate Light as the Fruitmaster is the biggest obstacle to her plan. Back in town, Light is given some new gear, all while Monica tags along on his next adventure that leads him to meet Signe in the holy city of Lanedine. So with that, this show ends having barely scratched the surface of this grand conspiracy by the church. I didn't expect much to happen, and that's exactly the case here.

Final Thoughts

This show has all the elements of a hot mess of a fantasy show with a generic plot, a badly written story, and above all terrible production values as this is a low-budget studio that adapted this. The show was decent enough to start things off that convinced me to keep going with this show, but the show quickly goes downhill after the first story arc with the storytelling getting stale and uninspiring, and while all this can be forgiven to a certain extent with better production values, that wasn't going to happen with this studio. It was especially problematic in the final arc with Light mostly absent. While it was mostly bad, there were some pretty good things to come out of this show to at least make it watchable with the story concept, the eccentric characters, and decent drama. But just about everything else was a huge letdown, so it is what it is.

Now go read the manga. Well at least the last battle with the demon and dragon upped the art budget from Light's fight. Too bad the fairy dance was a montage of still images, the slight dance in the OP gave me hope they might actually animate it more. Oh well, not horrible but nothing great either I guess I'll have to rank it slightly ahead of Aristocrat at 5.5/10.

In the end, Lena felt more like the MC than Light. Obviously they are hoping for a season 2 with that "ending"

Maybe it's because there have been so many HORRIBLE fantasy show's this year, but this one wasn't that bad. Good enough for a 6/10

I was surprised that they completely left Light out of the climax, and for that I'll raise my score a point. 6/10

I got tired of the slideshow animation, but the story is interesting enough to keep me watching, and I'll watch a second season if it comes out. I prefer Lena as a main character, so the more we see of her the better.

Why would she make a single edged sword when he's been using a double edge?

A blue haired kudere, how original.

I didn't see how well animated the dance was. I skipped it.

I don't much care which one is the MC. Splitting them up probably made the show slightly worse imo. 4/10. It was different than Aristocrat Ruin, but not any better.
