Episode 25

To start things off, Kenshin agrees to go to Kyoto, but wants to get there his own way rather than subjecting others to the collateral damage he expects on the way there, and Saito is quite disappointed with that decision seeing that he wants nothing more than to fight the Battosai, something Kenshin has no intention of doing. And then Sanosuke and Saito fight as Sanosuke and Yahiko plans to make the trip himself to ensure that Kenshin makes it back alive, and while Sanosuke took a lot of hits, he manages to show his conviction. Yahiko convinces Kaoru to make the trip as well with Megumi watching over the dojo while everybody is out. Things pick up right where they left off quite nicely as this arc is where this series really made its mark, and Shishio is one of the best-written villains out there.

So with that, the second of three arcs begins, and the original series becomes a fillerfest after the Kyoto arc ends. The third arc, Jinchu, would be partially adapted in Reflection, and I expect an announcement that it gets adapted as another two-cour series to come at the end of this season.

I just finished binging all the live-action films on Netflix, so nice to see this.

(Gotta say, those films had some impressive fighting, although Kenshin's weapon makes even less sense in live-action. He might as well just be hitting everyone with a piece of rebar.)

Episode 26

Kenshin is headed to Kyoto with Saito, and so are Sanosuke, Yahiko, and Kaoru who don't want this to potentially be the final time they see Kenshin. Also, Aoshi is making the trip after Saito tells him where he's going. Before that, he has some hoodlum monks who are defiling the graves of his fallen comrades that he has to take care of. Then Shishio's apprentice Sojiro drops by to let him know what he's up against in Kyoto. And then Kenshin runs into the ninja bandit Misao, who just conned some men out of their money. She tries to steal Kenshin's sword, only to find out that it's worthless as a reverse-blade sword. Misao is from Kyoto and went to Tokyo to search for somebody, but doesn't have the money to make the return trip, so she resorted to stealing, and then those guys come for her. Kenshin breaks the bridge seeing that he doesn't want to engage with them at this time. So through all this, Aoshi is going to Kyoto, while Kenshin now has somebody who can take him to Kyoto, but before that there's the matter of that missing person Misao is looking for that needs to be settled.

Episode 27

Now knowing that Misao is after Aoshi, who Kenshin just fought and is the only man left from the Oniwaban, Kenshin tries to sake off Misao, but gives it up when Misao falls into the gorge and Kenshin had to jump in to save her. While that's going on, Sanosuke gets lost trying to figure out how to get to Kyoto, while Megumi continues handling patients, and Kaoru and Yahiko go the easy way by boarding a ship to Osaka. While searching for Aoshi, Kenshin stumbles upon a dying man and his younger brother Eiji he protected. Those guys are from Shingetsu Village, a place that was attacked by Shishio's henchmen led by Senkaku and now they are squatting there as the village is no longer recognized. Eiji sees that his parents were hung, and the guys responsible for the massacre show up. Kenshin fights them, but one of them sneaks up behind Eiji and Misao, but Saito appears and kills him as he's none too pleased that Kenshin is wasting his time in a place like this when he should be in Kyoto. This goes to show just how brutal a guy Shishio is, and while he's not in Kyoto, this place is connected to the mummy samurai as well.

Misao is quite persistent, refusing to quit following Kenshin despite his best efforts to shake her off. Then they find a dying man who protected his younger brother Eiji, who fled a village being occupied by one of Shishio's henchmen. After hearing that Shishio himself is in that village at the moment, Kenshin heads there, where he finds Eiji's parents hung in a public display. When the people responsible show up, Kenshin fights them, and Hajime arrives to take out one of them who spotted Misao and Eiji.

Episode 29

As it turns out, Eiji's older brother Eiichiro was working with Saito on a secret mission seeing that he's from Shingetsu village, but he died protecting Eiji before he could complete it. Senkaku is holding Shingetsu village hostage and despite being ordered to not lower the corpses, Kenshin does just that. After that, Kenshin and Saito are off to confront Shishio inside the nearby mansion, while Misao stays behind to be with Eiji. Kenshin and Shishio have quite the heated exchange there as Kenshin is none too pleased about his reason for killing the village's residents. Before facing Shishio, he has to defeat Senkaku, who brags about killing 99 people. But Kenshin uses physics to defeat Senkaku as he went so fast, and while Senkaku matched his speed not realizing that he's going faster and faster that it puts a strain on his legs and it snaps. He launches a last-ditch attack, but that had no chance of landing a hit on Kenshin and a strike to the neck did the trick. So with Senkaku dealt with, it's now onto Shishio himself, though I know already that it won't be settled until they make it to Kyoto.

Kenshin and Hajime head for Shishio's mansion, where the burned man talks about his plans for bringing chaos to Japan once more. Shishio sends in Senkaku, the man who killed Eiji's parents and brother, but Kenshin ends up wearing him out so much he ends up breaking his leg, and his final attack proves futile as Kenshin lands a blow to his neck to knock him out. But Shishio is not someone to be trifled with, as he was observing everything.

Episode 29

After dealing with Senkaku giving him a broken leg and a badly bruised neck, Kenshin fights Sojiro as Shishio retreats to Kyoto telling Kenshin that they will settle the score in Kyoto. As Sojiro emits no sword aura that Kenshin can't use his signature techniques and instead it becomes a quick draw duel. Kenshin and Sojiro end up breaking each other's sword as Kenshin's reverse-blade sword is split in two, while Sojiro's sword is badly dented. Eiji is thirsting for revenge against Senkaku, but Saito tells him to back off and allow the police to take care of that for him. While that's happening, Sojiro is tasked with gathering Kyoto's Heavenly Blades. Afterwards, while Kenshin and Misao go to get a new sword before setting out for Kyoto, Eiji and Saito tie up loose ends at the village. Pretty much, there was no way that Kenshin and Saito were going to decide things in this village, and that's exactly what happens as Sojiro is somebody who was trained to counter Kenshin's techniques, and now Kenshin will need a new sword before continuing on. In the meantime, Sanosuke is lost in the forest.

Opening recap: Why Kenshin didn't slice his palm in half pressing upward against the sharp edge like that is beyond me. Anime physics strikes again.

That said, Misao is a cute little shinobi. Was cute in the live-action too.

Episode 30

Sanosuke gets hopelessly lost in the forest on the way to Kyoto, and along the way he meets Anji, a monk who's a Buddha devout. 10 years ago, Buddhism was abolished, and as such Anji is a fallen monk. He puts Sanosuke through some training to teach him Horiki seeing that after the beating he took from Saito, he needs to get stronger. So Sanosuke pounds away by pounding a rock with a fist aiming to shatter it. After all the pounding, he hurts his fists and the monk sees it increasingly futile, but he mastered the art of Horiki after a week of training himself to death. With that, it's onto Shimosuwa, where his father's army met their end on the next stop to Kyoto. As it turns out, Anji is one of the Heavenly Blades, though Anji isn't aware that he's siding with Kenshin. So now Sanosuke is a bit stronger after Anji had him pounding away.

Anji took a month to learn the technique, but Sanosuke manages to do it in a week. The thing is, Anji is actually one of the Ten Swords, so Sanosuke will no doubt end up fighting him once he makes his way to Kyoto.

Episode 31

Kenshin has arrived in Kyoto, back at the place where he made a name for himself as the Battosai. After taking Misao home, he has a chat with Nenji, who led the Oniwaban Clan while Kenshin was the Battosai. He agrees to keep the deaths about the Oniwaban Group sans Aoshi a secret from Misao. He's also looking for the swordsmith who made the reverse-blade sword, but Shakku Arai passed away eight years ago. So they seek his son Seiku instead, and sees that he's capable of making the reverse-blade sword after testing out a kitchen knife he made on a daikon. But Seiku has since stopped making swords seeing that in an era of peace there is no demand for them. However, there just might be a sword in storage somewhere that Shakku crafted before he died. In the meantime, Cho is getting ready to attack Kenshin as now Shishio knows that he has arrived in Kyoto.

Now that Shishio knows that Kenshin is in Kyoto, the Ten Swords are out to kick Kenshin while he's down and in a spot where without a reverse-blade sword, he needs to return to being the Battosai in order to defend Kyoto. Cho is sent after Seiku's family as he's after Shakku's final blade that has been offered inside a shrine, and he's threatening to kill Iori if they don't cough up the location. However, Misao caught wind of Cho and asked Seiku for the location so that she can contact Nenji and Kenshin through a carrier pigeon, and right away Kenshin rushes off to the shrine to confront Cho. Even without a sword, the Hiten Mitsurugi still packs a punch that would have knocked anybody else out, but Cho is equipped with Shakku's weaponry that includes his torso plate where Kenshin struck him. This Vash look-alike sure is out for Kenshin seeing that he's wielding weaponry that Shakku forged back when he made the world's most lethal swords, all while Kenshin still doesn't have a sword himself, but the sword at the shrine is the only guard rail left in order to fight back without becoming the Battosai again.

The Hakujin gives Kenshin fits as it stabs him in the leg. Seeing Kenshin trying to protect the family and the peace that Seiku made s the decision to go and get his father's final sword for Kenshin. And then Kenshin turns the tables using his sheath to block the Hakujin, then elbows him in the face to knock him down. Seiku throws him the sword, but he refuses to draw it. Then Cho puts him in a position where he has to draw it after falling for his taunt that allows him to launch a blindside attack. But Kenshin draws the sword and knocks him out not knowing that it is a reverse-blade sword. So with Cho defeated, he is arrested by the police, while the sword's hilt breaks seeing that it couldn't handle the Hiten Mitsurugi. And then it ends with a flashback to when Shakku gave Kenshin his reverse-blade sword that he made to atone for all the lives his weapons took. Pretty dramatic that was seeing that Kenshin acted on instinct, but he trusted the sword, and now he can fight back.

While that's going on, Kenshin sees his old master known only as Seijuro Hiko to ask for advice as to how to defeat Shishio without reverting to being a manslayer. Things are coming to a crossroads here now that Kenshin is surprised to see that Kaoru and Yahiko made the trip even though he told them to stay put going to show that as idealistic as Kenshin wants to be, there are some who just won't take things lying down and want to help hem get through these tough times.

Aoiya comes under attack while everybody is out sleeping, but Okina was prepared for the attack and lured the Owl Clan assassins into a trap. To protect Aoiya, Okina digs out his ninja garb and tonfas he thought he wouldn't need to put on anymore and engages in battle against Aoshi. But he was no match for Aoshi, who now wields dual kodachis, and not to mention the long daggers are sharp enough to cut through the tonfas. While that's going on, Hoji reports of the failed attack on Aoiya, and then Shishio reveals his power and why he's wrapped up like a mummy as he was tortured and left for dead when all of his sweat glands burned to a crisp, leaving his body scorching hot with no way of cooling it down. And with Okina totally defenseless with his weapon broken, Aoshi finishes him off with a six-slash technique and Misao arrives to see all that go down. So the second half begins with Shishio now getting even more serious, all while Misao finally catches up to Aoshi only to see him killing her grandfather. Misao is now at a crossroads as Aoshi is not the same guy she remembered him to be, all while Shishio is really turning up the heat.
