Those new to donghua might be surprised that there are often two versions of shows. One industry buys the rights to make a sort of animated web comic drawn in rudimentary 2D, although quality has greatly improved in recent years. Then, the works that do well might be picked up by a higher budget studio for a 3D production.

Despite the 3D versions being more of an eye candy, I've found the 2D versions to be vastly superior in terms of plot and character development. The 3D versions might give some extended fight sequences with flashy lights, but skimp out on much of the humor and character development arcs. The protagonist Ye Chen in the 2D version was much more devious. He was talkative and comedic, often narrating his scheming thoughts. The 3D version made him the same as every other 3D protagonist -- like a wooden board with no personality.

This even happens to all the side characters. There are more interactions with all the characters in the 2D version that fleshes them out and spells out their significance. The 3D versions will often introduce a character that become a main character in a jarring transition. The way they act don't make sense, because they weren't given the opportunity to build rapport.
