In the anime Alicia and friends band together with Yumiella, and defeated the Demon Lord together. Plus at the end they left on good terms with Yumiella. Even when Alicia lost control of herself and stab Yumiella, resulting the castle taking Alicia under their care. In the LN the defeat of the DL is still the same and so is castle taking Alicia under their care is the same rest is fundamentally different. I'll leave as a spoiler to read.
Which ending you prefer? I know the ending is basically the same but I think LN ending makes better sense to me with Alicia attitude towards Yumiella.

I can understand Oswald and William pulling something like that, but it doesn't make much sense to me for Alicia to betray and try to kill her. I haven't read the LN, but it doesn't sound like a reasonable ending.

@Codyics Everything I'm going to mention can be found in the anime. Alicia never trusted Yumiella to the point she thought Yumiella was the Demon Lord. When Alicia was growing up, she was led to believe people with black hair and eyes were evil. Plus, Alicia thought she was going the special one at school with her light magic, so she was jealous of Yumiella.

They betrayed the kingdom. Everyone would have died if they succeeded.

Alicia thought Yumiella was evil, so she freaked out.

So in the LN they are imprisoned ? Would that affect the possibility of getting a second season?

@TEMPEST_1 It won't change anything with a season 2 or 3.

As long as it doesn't hurt the chances of a season 2 it's fine with me.

So Yumiella and Alicia building a friendship in the previous episode(or maybe episode 10?) never happened in the LN?
If it did, I find it hard to understand, why Alicia will betray Yumiella at the end in the LN (without getting possessed by the game scenario).

In the LN Alicia never really got friendly with Yumielia. When Yumielia took Alicia level grinding, she hated every minute of it. She swore to never forgive Yumielia for it. Basically the same ending but it got there somewhat differently. The spoiler for little farther down the line in the LN.
I just find it interesting it feels like has a good ending and bad ending depending on where you look.

I prefer the LN version. I didn't read the LN besides what's in your post, but the anime was too much happy ending and cliché for me.

I generally would have preferred if she was more selfish / badass.

I do, too. Even with the changes, if they wanted a second season, everything would remain the same at least.

So...

They downplayed the anime version is what you're saying.

Where it gives a bit less "drama" to the ending.

@amlg Exactly right. They chose to go with the happy ending in the anime.

The ending sucked. The fact that she is basically a God and still needs to team up with those low level characters was dumb. I mean, if she needed to use the light sorceress that's one thing, but the other characters were crap. I didn't care about any of them. Not even her "boyfriend". I would have rather had 13 episodes of her bumbling through school and life being OP.

@Anime_God_King Yeah Yumielia still solo the Demon Lord. The only reason the tag along were there so they can steal the credit for defeating the DL. The royal family needed credit so they can say, they still had the right to rule.

Based on my understanding from reading the light novel up to volume 4 (the anime adapting up to the end of volume 1), the altered ending in the anime would be difficult to continue into the next season. It’s possible that the ending was intentionally made this way because there are no plans to continue into the next season?

I found out there are 2 entries of this anime one being manga and the other being LN, which got me confused as to which one to read. Judging from the comments both have a different kind of approach on what happened at ep 12. I guess i will go with the manga one.

I wouldn't call either of the endings good or bad.

LN makes for a much better story overall. Anime completely rewritten Alicia and pulled the "the world forces bad things to happen, people have no agency" angle out of nowhere. LN is a much more down to earth story about modern day human tribalism, and Alicia's character is consistent through the book.

I'm probably going to keep reading the LN. There was an interesting hint dropped in the epilogue.

EDIT:
Caught up to LN volume 4. What's interesting, is in the afterword the author regrets how Alicia ended up in LN, and praises "good girl" Alicia from manga edition.

In the afterword the author says that LN is an adaptation of the web version, it's improved by editing and has 1.5 times more content. So it's entirely possible that in a translation of the web version some events unfold differently (I haven't read it).
