So wasn't Rudeus's earth magic what caused the bears to be covered in mud and hence be protected from the fire? Isn't it his fault they were trapped in the first place? So it kind of didn't make sense for Suzanne to 'thank' Rudeus for saving their lives??? Or was the mud magic instructed by the other party members?
Also the crowd in the guild chanting Rudeus's name after the party introduced themselves...
The direction of the first episode just doesn't sit well with me tbh
The animation was nice, although it's heavily overshadowed by Jujutsu Kaisen.

I think it was already planned to get the Grizzlies in mud and blast them with fire but who knew that they would cleverly use the mud to cover themselves up and be immune to fire.

It was just an unexpected event which was overcame with Rudeus' help. I think this justifies it ✌🏻

if he hadn't used earth magic, the bears would have ran towards them and it could have been dangerous as they were unaware of black bears, imagine they were stuck in close fight and just them black bears came. if not for mud they would have been surrounded even earlier. we can say it had both pros and cons.

the reason he was thanked was because the party members were injured and exhausted after dealing with that many bears. they couldn't possibly have fought the giant sloth of white bears at the end and make it out alive. that's why they thanked rudy. imagine if the whole scenario played out like it did but rudy was absent, they all would have been bear dinner 100%.

also why do you have to compare animation with jjk? both are completely different style. mt is back with it's usual animation which looks gorgeous.

i don't think the chanting has any hidden meaning or anything. it's just for fun, they introduced themselves to the guild, got their approval and are just having fun.

this is what i concluded.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.
Feeling half happy, half sad.

It's better to thank Rudeus and develop a better relationship with him rather than blame him and chastise him for doing his job. I think they should have reprimanded him for silently standing there and doing nothing while the other party members were putting their life on the line to cover his ass. But when they all were exhausted from fighting, Rudeus just goes in there casually and nukes those bear to finish it in 1 hit. They were both amazed and grateful that he was there with them. So the "Thank you" by Suzanne and Sarah.

I dont care if JJk has better animation than MT. I'm just glad MT doesnt have an average or subpar animation like tons of shows out there. Also, I think Zom 100 has the best animation this season so far, after that nuke of the 1st episode dropped.

Rudeus only did what they told him to do. He literally was just there for support. If things went wrong when Rudeus used his earth magic, it would be the leader's fault who instructed him to do so, not Rudeus'.

Also idk why you would compare the animation of MT to Jjk. They're just not in the same realm, MT clearly never had the talent nor budget to support such high quality production. Jjk is a giant in the industry and there's higher expectations to be met from its staff.

Zom 100 didn't have the BEST animation as per effort put in, but the vibrant composition and color design really elevates it and makes it very good to watch
Wait fuck I forgot to mention storyboards, those were probably what carried the first episode. Very creative storyboards!

Mushoku Tensei season 1 had the most perfect animation, far better than JJK S1 (although if JJK S2 would top it is yet to be seen) and it had a stacked enough staff list. The compositing and color design were the most fitting for the series and all in all it was near flawless. S1 Part 2 did have some rough edges but they made a flawless Turning Point 2 episode and that's the highlight, so it was more like clever usage of budget. S2 is different though, it actually lacks staff BECAUSE of JJK and Onimai. That can be called a production planning mistake. There would be very few mind blowing animation sequences in Part 1 but I expect the 6 month gap for part 2 to bring some nice staff to the list, and maybe, hopefully for the old director to return.
My point is, Mushoku Tensei could have looked better than JJK

Let me tell you I'm not a hater of this show, assuming this refers to me. A look at my profile would solve all your doubts regarding that. MT is one of my most fav anime of all time, and it was also my third/fourth anime I ever watched. I just asked a genuine question/put forward a valid criticism.

thanks for clearing that up!
(but JJK S2 still looks visually better. I mean it's a bigger show anyway so eh...)

the plan was that rudeus would slow them down, we heard that beforehand. so it's more likely than not that they told rudeus to use earth magic

This isn't too much of a problem bc this will be a at least 2 part season. You're right tho.

In the manga it’s another group of bears that just so happen to be sleeping in mud already, I’m guessing it’s the same case here

The plan was made around hunting Luster Grizzlies. A group of Black Grizzlies in mud showed up. I'm guessing they have different resistances and intelligence. That's why when they first see them, Sara says "No way! Black grizzlies!?" the subs I watched has black in Italics for emphasis.

The bears that Rudeus traps in mud are white.
The bears that are completely covered in mud were black (not just because of the mud).

This is stated during the episode with their surprise "omg black bears!".
Basically, they got ambushed by "higher tier" bears while doing their slayer task. If Rudeus hadn't blasted the whole lot of them, the whole party likely would have died.

All of this. Rudy's earth spell had nothing to do with the mud covered black bears. They were a seperate group. In fact if he hadn't casted the spell the white bears might've reached the group before the mage could finish his chant so his instinctual combat awareness was on point.

It was another group of bears sleeping in the mud, its in the LN, the fight also plays out way different in the anime. In the LN and manga, he just steps up and 1 shots everything like he did at the end of the fight in the anime.

WTF THIS FITS THE PLOT SO MUCH BETTER.
It would also solve the problem of him apparently getting over his depression midway through the episode only to be depressed again in the next episode. the direction is rather bad. Missing Kazutaka Sugiyama so much this season, choppy incomplete animation and so many off model frames
