Strong and smart protagonist who are not naive and dense especially in war anime/manga

The way I enjoy a story is strongly dependent on the protagonist. If the protagonist is bad, no matter how good the story is, I cannot enjoy it, in some cases, I can't even bear to read it. Now...

I've gotten enough of seeing naive protagonist in lots of series. They tend to have so much leeway as to talk to their enemies when they have a big chance to immediately kill them and win. And often, they end up prolonging the whole war because the enemies escaped/countered after the protagonist gives them enough time by talking/persuading them. "Kill and end the war when you have the chance" is what I'm asking.

I've read Drag-On Dragoon - Shi ni Itaru Aka. I like how the protagonist didn't hesitate to kill to end the problem. But they're too merciless for me.

I enjoy adult content Guro/slavery/extreme actions such as bandit raiding a village and do what they normally do to the village woman (Don't judge me...). But only as long as the protagonist is not into such a thing.

I cannot stand a Godless protagonist or a revenge-driven protagonist. So I want neither of them. By not wanting a Godless protagonist does not necessarily mean I want a strong believer. Just one that does not ridicule God would be fine, or that he believes in a different God from the rest of the world.

Basically, I ask for a protagonist who would not hesitate or delay killing or at least incapacitated his enemies when he has the chance. He is not naive, nor weak towards a woman. I'm fine even if his strength is mediocre or he runs away often. But not because he's a coward, it must be because he is smart enough not to fight someone stronger than him head-on.

Preferably:
1. Male
2. Works as a hired blade/mercenary/or just a single guy doing odd jobs.
3. He travels around and doesn't stay in one place for too long.
4. Has a big romance element or He is (Intentional/unintentionally) looking for a woman to settle down or there is a woman after him.
5. He is not such a smiley guy.
6. Stoic and pragmatic

I know that's a lot to ask for, that's why something close to it would be fine. all help will be appreciated. Thank you very much.

My favorite type of character.

Code Geass - manipulates people to fight for him to their death. also personally kills a bunch as well. he is however, both godless and revenge-driven.

Zetsuen no Tempest - not exactly a war anime, but there is kind of a battle for the survival of the world going on. The protagonist is not physically strong, but handles the situation very well for being suddenly introduced to the crazy circumstances. described by other characters in the show as "cunning" and "not afraid to pull the trigger"

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei - starts off looking like a school anime(which it is) but there are real battles involving military. Not only is the protagonist smart(super smart) but also ridiculously strong and absolutely does not hesitate to kill. in fact he even goes well out of his way to eliminate the enemy if they mess with his sister.

Alderamin on the sky - protagonist is a prodigal military commander that would rather be lazy. prefers to not kill if possible but definitely doesn't hesitate to if he knows it would be difficult otherwise.

Misfit of demon king academy - plot is a bit weaker but the main character definitely fits the criteria. one of his enemies was being annoying so he killed him, then brought him back to life so he could kill him again. hilarious.

Aldnoah Zero - smart but not physically strong. though its a mecha show so physical strength doesnt matter much anyway. pretty emotionless guy that thinks up strategies to beat the much more technologically superior enemy.

Lelouch was good and all, but as you mentioned, he's too revenge-driven and obsessive for me.

I completed Zetsuen no Tempest and gave it 7/10.

Already watched Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei too.

I've Alderamin on the sky on my watch plan. how good is the war?

Misfit of demon king academy sounds pretty much like "Isekai Mahou wa Okureteru!" But this's new to me. I'll give it a try, thanks!

for some reason I've been avoiding Aldnoah Zero for years. what's so good about it?

Thank you for your recommendation. I really appreciated it!

I believe the protagonist of Gundam X fits your criteria. I also recommend Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans, but you may not like that its protagonist is emotionless.

Sukeban Deka has a female protagonist who otherwise fits your criteria.

I also think you'd like X, but the manga is on permanent hiatus.

Mm, I stop following Gundam series. by "Gundam X" Do you mean After war Gundam X?

Sukeban Deka - a detective story? I guess I'll give it a try.

X does seems interesting! I think I saw it's cover in my childhood. Too bad that it's on hiatus though.

Anyway, thanks a lot!

I guess you could try:
Grancrest Senki: War themed anime. Has the brutality you asked for. Has an adult side. Has romance. He isn't dense and takes initiative both with war and women.

Also, I recently finished Arslan Senki. It has the weak and forgiving Mc you dislike. But the character development is pretty good and the MC grows along with the story. I think you might enjoy it.

Alderamin is only 13 episodes so it doesnt get too deep into the war but in addition to the actual battles, it does have some stuff on the more behind the scenes things thats necessary to war, such as supply routes, scouting, formations, using terrain appropriately, morale, etc...

Aldnoah Zero wasn't particularly great, and is probably only liked by people who like this kind of smart non-naive main character. It does however, have an insane soundtrack.

Mm, was hesitating about it Grancrest senki. But I guess I'll try it. Thanks! Does it has anything to do with Record of agarest war? cause I played that game.

I watched a few episode of arslan senki. Can't bear it... Maybe I'll give it another try.

I assumed so. But futuristic space stuff like that doesn't sit well with me.

Ayanokouji from classroom of elite, it’s not actually war but there’s a lot of battles (mental and physical) especially in light novel.

It starts off similar to the game but the plot is entirely different. The similarity might just be a coincidence though.

Even I absolutely hate such MCs but by S2 I started to really like Arslan. It's really worth watching if you wait for him to develop into a leader. The plot is actually pretty good the further the series progresses.

I'm about halfway watching grancrest now. the way I see it is not exactly a strong mc. But rather, mc that is controlled by the woman. He does take initiative, but not good enough. in the end it looks like he's the woman's puppet. But well, I enjoy it quite a bit.

Mm, fair enough. let's see how much patience I got in store, haha. Thanks mate!

Kingdom huh. That Li Xin guy was always keeping me from watching it. Looks like the kind of reckless kid I don't like. People seem to like the series though. I guess I'll give it a try. Thanks.
