In the introduction of the episodes we are recalled of what mushis are, how primordial being they are even more primal than animals (Animalia), plants (Plantae), fungus (Fungi), algae (Protista) and bacteria (Monera) as Ginko puts they are "life itself".

Why would they name this beings "mushi", if this word is usually referred to insects? There were people able to see tiny creature that most people couldn't and they would refer to them as they do to insects, "mushi". When other humans able to see and willing to deal with these "mushis" appeared the name pretty much stuck and they are basically able to explain what most of them are "tiny creatures" (in most cases at least) - I guess a fair comparison would be saying that a Goldfish is just as a fish as a Great White Shark.

Manga, Chapter 1
In the first issue, the translators had the care to translate what Shinra was writing on the pictures with the mushis, describing their movements, if they emit light, if it is an offspring.

At the first time the brush is made of bamboo, the second time it doesn't look like bamboo.

Midorimono is another word to refer to "mushi" that is used, if my memory serves me right, only here.

What makes people able to see mushis are something called "youshitsu" something beyond the five sense and some people have more or less affinity to it, but all have some amount of it.

On the manga extra info, it is pointed out that having a bathroom and inside at that time was something that only rich people had.

Renzu becomes something between a human and a mushi and Shinra, despite being able to see small mushis can't see her, which means either Ginko's eyes allow him to see Renzu, or his "youshitsu" is "stronger".

As stated in the banquet, the mushis knew that Shinra would have those "powers" which meant that Renzu's drinking the kouki wasn't the thing that triggered it, but an incentive for her to become a mushi and assist him in whatever he needed; unlike Tanyuu, which is something that passes within the Karibusa family.

Comparing anything is very difficult in fact, since, first of all, each has a plus and a minus. I just had a very interesting topic at the university about this, about comparison, and I explore one gorgeous site and found amazing material about comparison. Often, as for me, everything depends on what exactly the person wants to get, and one small plus can overlap all the advantages of another, if that is what the person needed.

Manga, Chapter 4

Right after Sui says "so you are coming?" we get to see Ginko on his way to that village, we see him climbing a mountain and what seems to be a waterfall.

Other than that, besides some order changes, it seems the anime follows pretty much the manga.

Some things that were left open though: why shouldn't one get inside the stream of light? Also what was that liquid pouring from Sui's eyes?

Edit: Answering my own questions: it might be that the stream of light carries only primordial beings and getting inside it might make any living creature regress to a more basic being. For the liquid that pouring from Sui's eyes, it seems to be just another mushi, the same one that Ginko applies on his glass eye so Sui can see again.

Manga, Chapter 2

The elder says on the manga that her grandson lost both of his parents, on the anime we only get to see him losing his mum.

Maybe because they were still consider how to draw mushis for the anime, we only get weird effects representing mushis when the elder gets home, on the manga we see mushis better drawn.

When the kid is in that veil talking about how loud mushis can be, his grandma is near on the manga, but not on the anime.

After the kid talks about how his mum had the same disease the translation on the manga goes on a different route than the anime.

Manga, Chapter 3

Yamamomo is a Japanese bayberry, just a curiosity.

On the manga, the people from the village whisper after the tsunami "why didn't he have a premonition?", and this didn't get to the anime.

When the guy cuts the pillow, the liquid seems dark, almost how blood is portrayed, on the anime it was orange.

Questions raised: if Ginko knew that dude's pillow was somewhat related to his life, why did he leave it on the fire? Or was he sure that the fire created by the mushi wouldn't destroy the mushi?

A Story of Not so Long Ago 1

Here we have the inspiration for "The Sleeping Mountain", the author's grandmother told her a story about her childhood.
