I'm looking for something new to watch and am in a bit of a space mood. Interested in something somewhat realistic. Is there an anime similar to The Martian in terms of exploration, getting abandoned, etc? Sort of looking for something like that in terms of planet exploration. Currently trying out Planetes. Prefer dub with newer animation style.

I'm also looking for something with a similar setting to Gurren Lagann, but less/no mech. I tried Desert Punk, but it was a struggle getting through an episode. I'd love something with that sort of setting but with a less pervy or older character.

I was also looking for the name of an anime I saw on here. It mentioned something about an alien race taking a human who was powerful and could save them from annihilation or something similar.

In Ergo Proxy the characters travel to different places in a post-apocalypic world. Still our Earth, though, probably Eurasia, but there's a strong theme of exploration.

Uchuu Kyoudai focuses on astronaut training, but there is a story arc where one of the brothers travels to the moon and does some exploration. I've only watched a couple of episodes of Moonlight Mile, but that might fit your interests as well.

There's Uninhabited Planet Survive, where a group of children get marooned on an alien planet. It's a bit on the "kiddy" side, but still quite good for a children's show.

Not one of my favorites, but Suisei no gargantia sort of fits what you're looking for...

Was about to say Planetes but realized you are already watching it. I hope you like it.
That last description reminds me of Heroic Age, but it's probably not what you're looking for. It's still a space-alien anime though.

Heroic Age is the title I was looking for, thanks. For some reason, the two site I use for dubbed episodes both have non-dubbed or subbed episodes after the first one.
