Accel World is probably closest. Both SAO and Accel World are based on novels written by the same author. Other anime with the "stuck in the fantasy world" premise include Log Horizon, Re Zero (currently airing), and No Game No Life.

I am so sorry that you had to suffer through such a horrendous anime. Come, I will show you the way. Here are some shows with premises similar to Sword Art Online, but without the one-dimensional characters and nonsensical plotlines (unless where intentional).

Similar Premise (Stuck Inside a Video Game):
.hack//SIGN
Log Horizon
KonoSuba
Outbreak Company

Similar Tone (Us vs. The World):
Gurren Lagann
Fate/Zero
Fate/Stay Night [Unlimited Blade Works]
Angel Beats

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."
