I'd say don't feel bad because high school sucks. Anime makes you think you're missing out because Japan's work culture after high school makes you believe the best time of your life is high school.

To be honest, I found college to be MUCH more fun than high school. Loved college so much that now I work in collegiate athletics as an adult.

I don't know what to suggest from an anime viewing perspective to take your mind off of it. Maybe something like Golden Time? (Since it's set in college?)

I have watched Golden Time and I enjoyed it fully, without the bitter taste left from school animes. Of course I hope college will be better :)

My question is more, what is their lifestyle? Their worldview?

One group of friends cares only about a few popular TV shows and studying. The other is mainly interested in shitty memes. These are toxic groups.

Their lifestyle varies. Some are like me, introverts who enjoy movies, anime and books. In fact it is because one of them that I started watching anime. Others are in all honesty rotten, we have a drinker and a junkie, but I somehow feel relatively close to them - closer than to anyone else, at least. Most of them have a pessimistic worldview, but I do, too.

It's weird how you sometimes feel connected to people vastly different than you.

Do you like that lifestyle, though?

Anime distort the reality of high school. In reality, high school period sucks. There is homework everyday, there are written or oral tests all the time, etc. I could quite easily pass tests (with good score) without much studying but homework was always extremely annoying. I could probably repeat university experience but there is no way I would ever want to repeat high school experience.

Sometimes. Sometimes I feel too alone. Sometimes I see the benefits.

Those school life anime are a heavily idealized vision of what anime/manga creators wish their school life was. If it's any reassurance, keep in mind that actual Japanese high schools tend to contain a lot of teach-to-the-test drudgery, hours of semi-mandatory after-school club activities, cram schools, and mega high-pressure highschool/university entrance exams that consumes nearly all of students' time. Not much time for romantic hijinks and other forms of goofing off. So basically, if those characters really existed, their school lives likely wouldn't be better than yours. Despite numerous romantic failings, I certainly wouldn't exchange my American high school experience for a Japanese one. No matter how short the fashionable uniform skirt hemline may or may not have been in the late 90s, lol.

Everyone has benefits and drawbacks. The question is, how satisfied are you with them?

If you're not satisfied, you must find another group. It won't be easy, but I found one and my life drastically improved.

No, I want more - closer friends who understand me better and I understand them too. Anyway, big plans for the future, but they'll have to wait - until my university life starts.

Then you will have to enlarge your social circle, look for more people until you find people you can connect to deeply.
