Best ADULT anime? Best ADULT manga?

Like take Breaking Bad, it is very mature and isn't meant for giggly high schoolers or edgy teenagers, or maybe it is idk, but either way it's also for adults who want a complex, mature story with realistic adult characters.

Is there any anime or manga like that?

I've seen the Monster anime, that was probably the closest thing to what I'm looking for, although I thought the "is it bad to kill psycho killers" thing to be pretentious.

I'm willing to settle for teenage/college characters as long as it also focuses on adult characters and is very serious and mature, as well as dark and controversial.

Read berserk, one of those engaging pieces of art that have come from Japan. It is everything you're looking for and then some, but it is quite violent, if that isn't your thing.

Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi-this is more on the fantasy side where it deals with immortality and those type of things. but this anime is definitely for mature audiences
Aoi Bungaku Series-a very dark storytelling series where each story has a different scenario but this is a very interesting and unique series
