I've always wondered this and was never entirely sure I mean TV uses PG and G like the movies do but they replace R and PG 13 with MA and TV 14? Anyone have the reason why?

Movies / Music / TV Shows / Video Games are not regulated by the government in terms of ratings, these were set-up by the industry themselves.

Why they didn't just decide to all use the same rating? I have no idea.

Well, R ratings legally restricts people under the age of 17, and you can't really do that with television.

A minor can still see an R rated movie with an adult present, you're thinking of NC-17 as in no one under 17 can see the movie.

I know what it means. The R stands for restricted, it restricts minors without the presence of an adult.

It's a different regulating body. In America, movies were rated by the MPAA and television by the FCC through the tv parental guidelines. Both are independent of one another.

Good point but still odd they'd use some of the same ratings but change others.

Although while the guidelines were set, they were not enforced by law. So if (for some reason) they board that decides movie ratings were persuaded to make a rated R movie "pg-13", their would be nothing stopping them. Of course, this is not in their best interests but you get the point.

What makes it even more confusing is that G (general) is the lowest movie rating but is considered to be one of the higher ratings for television.

What do you mean higher ratings for television? For both movies and TV G means anyone can watch. Only one lower is Y and arguably Y7

With TV ratings G is level 3 of 6 (Y, Y7, G, PG, 14, MA) while with movies it is level 1 of 5 (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17).

Here in Canada we have 14A and 18A for movie ratings which children are allowed to watch with their parents and there is an "A" rating for porn. Because of movies being imported from the US PG-13 is also common, although it is quite similar to 14A.

Because there different organizations.

The MPAA rates movies.

The FCC rates TV.

The ESRB rates games.

Pretty much what has already been said. Different organization. Although, they're essentially classed the same despite the ages being different. TV-14 is TV's PG-13, MA is their R rating. Likewise, rating systems in every country tend to be different for movies and television, because as it's already been stated, different branches are controlling the ratings for each, but the classifications fundamentally tend to end up the same since they're all based on the same model -

there's the "all ages" rating, generally reserved for kids shows or general programming with no objectionable content, there's the PG rating, reserved for programs with slight objectionable content and small amts of maturer humor. sometimes there's a halfway point between the all ages and PG rating, on TV they call that the TV-Y7 rating in the US, although it's mostly ignored by parents being considered more "inappropriate" than G.... then there's the "teen" rating, where content becomes more objectionable and is intended for an older audience, but that audience is not necessarily adults... and finally R, where something is clearly aimed at older teens or adults and is absolutely objectionable to children. Seldom is anything like R-18, or NC-17 used, unless there is a huge amount of sexually suggestive content in a show or movie, and among that content generally, is male nudity, that's pretty much all that differentiates an R rating from the highest "adult" NC-17 classification.

The reason they do that is because movies in general are much easier to rate since their usually 2-3 hours long at max compared to a tv show which comes out every episode and has its own seasons.

Nobody is going to be rating every episode in tv show and deciding if its going to get an R rating or PG-13. If one episode might have nudity part in it and the other episode doesnt, it doesnt mean that the some parts of the series should be allowed to be viewed by younger audience since episodes are part of the whole series as a whole, not separated.

Just like anime where you have Shounen/Seinen audience the series gets the label who its being targeted at the beggining of it serialization which will allow writers and people who are in charge or rating to not have to worry about and review every TV episode that ever aired.

Huh? When Neon Genesis Evangelion aired on adult Swim some episodes were PG, some were TV 14 and some were MA. Not all shows always use the same rating for every episode.
