i just said something about kamen rider and got my head bit off lol i think
but im actually SERIOUSLY curious
what do u like about kamen rider?
please let me know
when i was younger i watched vr troopers, power rangers, masked rider (kamen rider) haha even big bad beetle borges.....but after a while i got tired of the cheesy monsters, and sparks flying when i see a slash lol the MAKE MY MONSTER GROW! i got tired of it, but ppl are still watching it....is kamen rider that bad ass??????? if so then maybe i saw the wrong season and you should tell which one to go watch and i will sit and watch it.
It's really tough when you equate the somewhat poorly made, American Power Rangers from the 90's with the new, Japanese Kamen Rider series.
Okay, so I LOVED Power Rangers as a kid, and I still enjoy it from time to time. So part of the reason why I like Kamen Rider is the nostalgia. Yeah, sometimes the monsters are a bit cheesy but that reminds me of the Power Rangers I watched as a kid, which I loved. I also enjoy the action. Maybe it's something to do with brain chemistry, but I get a real kick out of it (no pun intended)!
But there's more to it than that, which is on the surface like icing on the cake. Most of the series have interesting plots and characters. My current favorite was Kamen Rider Blade, which was pretty dark. It had its cheesy moments, sure, but the overreaching plot was damn interesting.
It's especially interesting to me when a Kamen Rider is secretly not a human being. Blade's token non-human rider was one of the most awesome characters I have ever seen. He began as a the usual dark and mysterious stranger, who turns out to be a Kamen Rider they didn't know about. In the end he's also an enemy and a monster who has the power to destroy the world, and how the save the world AND him was all kinds of awesome!
Look at me gush.
It's hard to explain my fandom to someone like you, who is so dead set on making that comparison. Let's get your facts straight:
Every American series like Power Rangers, Beetle Borgs, and Masked Rider were based on a Japanese TV series. Power Rangers was made from Japan's long-running children's franchise, Super Sentai. Specifically the original PR was made from Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, if you're wondering. Mighty' Morphin Power Rangers (and every series since) was made by cutting together the Japanese action footage and new scenes with American actors. The acting was bad, the cuts were bad, and the dubbing (of Rita Repulsa) in Mighty Morphin' was bad. Every Power Rangers fan agrees on this. It's still pretty bad, even today with better technology. The story and characters are usually weak and, yeah, meant to appeal to children. Don't get me wrong. I DO love Power Rangers. As a matter of fact, a couple series have been an improvement on the Super Sentai series they were based on. That's a matter of personal opinion, though.
On the other hand, the Japanese series ARE made for children, especially Super Sentai which I don't watch on a regular basis, but have stories and characters that also appeal to adults. I'm talking about Kamen Rider, but there are a lot more of these kinds of series in Japan than Sentai and Kamen Rider. The genre these shows are a part of, by the way, is called tokusatsu. The term literally means "special effects" but has come to refer to superhero shows and monster movies, primarily. The production values are higher, because these series have been going on for almost 40 years (in the case of Super Sentai) and have devoted fan followings and a permanent place in the hearts and minds of Japanese.
You know, the Masked Rider series of the 90's in North America was based on a series that was made in the 80's in Japan. That picture you posted is a rendering of one of the original Kamen Riders, from back in the 70's. As a matter of fact, there were no Kamen Rider series made in the 1990's. Fans separate the two eras by the Emperors that were ruling in Japan at the time. The original series are Showa era. The new series are Heisei era. Heisei series are quite a bit of an improvement and some of rather dark tones and aren't just about beating up bad guys.
Bleh. I could go on and on for hours.
Tokusatsu series have been made exclusively for adults, you know. GARO, for example, as well as some Ultraman series. Because there's an adult market for these kinds of shows. If you really think Kamen Rider isn't worth your time, then maybe you should try out GARO instead?
Or maybe you'd prefer the boob-tastic Cutie Honey? ;)
Look, this is Asian Drama Addicts. You won't find too many other Kamen Rider fans here, you know? Trust me, I've tried. A better place to ask this, if you're really curious,s the tokusatsu club here on MAL:
By the way, asking someone why they like Kamen Rider and tokusatsu is like asking someone why they like anime and Asian dramas. Why do you like anime? Why do you like dramas? Whatever your reasons, you do. Every kind of entertainment has a variety of fans and value for its fans. Therefore, everything is worth seriously watching at least once, because you can't know what you'll like until you try it.
SEE
i just learned a lesson!
tho i knew all the stuff about super sentai because i wikipedia'd it a few years ago i think, and i had heard about that from some1 when i was like in 4th grade, and i watched some of the old episodes from the 70s 80s and 90s
where should i go to watch it? the GARO that u were talking about.
haha cutie honey is wack tho, ive seen maybe 2 or 3 eps of it..
maybe your right, maybe the nostalgia plays a big part in it, like sometimes ill watch get the urge to watch wrestling or fox kids on saturdays so i can understand that
i think i watched the 1st two episodes of a kamen rider where in the OP there were a bunch of roses flying around and someone was making a violin, and i saw the 1st episode of blade i think.
You can grab GARO with English subs at TV-Nihon: http://www.tvnihon.com/ Kamen Rider and Sentai subs too.
The OP with the roses and violin was for Kamen Rider Kiva. Now, Kiva was pretty silly series. It's my least favorite Kamen Rider series so far. The concept was kind of cool, but in the end the characters kinda sucked, the story was all over the place (tons of unresolved plot holes), and they tried way too hard to be funny. But Kamen Rider Den-O was a hard act to follow, so I can understand the producer's attempts to make another "fun" series.
The only problem with Blade is that it takes about 10 or so episodes to get going, and it's not until episode 20 or so that the story really takes off. The second half of the series was just amazing. Kamen Rider can take a bit of perseverance at times. Blade, Den-O, Kabuto, and Faiz are four awesome Kamen Rider series worth checking out.
Garo0 is only 26 episodes long so it's not so much of a long haul. The Ultraman series made exclusively for adults, Ultraseven X, is only 12 episodes long so if you want a quick hit of tokusatsu check it out. I haven't watched it yet, though, so I can't attest to it how good/bad it is.
Can I be honest? I've never watched Cutie Honey in any form. XD
ohhh, ok, im going to watch that probably right now...im downloading joint security area (kmovie) so i have time.............oh ok, maybe thats why i didnt like it then....ill try garo and den-o first......then ultraseven x........then the others pending on how i feel.....
to be honest im an EASY person to please, really easy, so if u say its good it might be and i might like it, im open minded, if i wasnt then i wouldnt be curious at all...
cutie hnoney was terrible lol the girls were cute tho, but dont they have to be??? lol
Compaqmac321 said: ohh, haha well which one was darker? blade?
Blade. But both are awesome series for different reasons. Blade is dark, as is Kabuto and I *think* Faiz/555, but I just started watching it. Blade is basically all seriousness, and has all the dark themes and violence. It gets surprisingly bloody for a KR series near the end, too. @_@
Den-O was not dark at all, but featured a fantastic cast of characters and a great storyline. It's probably the most popular Heisei series in Japan, and with good reason. It's so funny!
I agree with what Susan said earlier. It's kinda unfair to compare the American versions such as Power Rangers and VR Troopers to the Japanese stuff like Kamen Rider 'cuz the American versions are just copy cats and not quite the same "quality" as the real stuff.
Of course, the Tokusatsu stuff isn't always gonna have like the best looking graphics, but for some of us, there's just something addictive and entertaining about such series.
I for one don't necessarily like ALL of them, but I've developed an interest after watching such series as Garo.
Also, I might note, there's no point in trying so hard to understand why people like something. It's either you like it or you don't, but there are obviously people here that like stuff like Kamen Rider.
i mean.....i guess i get it more now.......like i said garo's 1st episode was good, kiva wasnt good tho.....neither was cutie honey.....ill watch more.....i wasnt really comparing it to american versions, i was saying why i stopped watching the american versions.
susan the fighting in garo tho was good, the girl in it was cute too...u already know i had to mention the girl lol
Yeah, I'm basically a brick wall with boobs and feet. XD My Dad is 6'4", so it's all genetics.
A lot of toku is like watching good anime. =P I mean, special effects and what not give it that anime-ish feeling. Some of it has the solid storytelling too. But like sakura_r0se said, it's not all good effects, and not everyone will enjoy it. As I said, I have a soft spot for Power Rangers, but I don't watch Super Sentai. I managed to watch one series but all the other ones have just not interested me in the least.
ohh, yea im 6'3 but i dont know where i get my height from, im the tallest one in my house lol...........
yea....its an interesting show, ill keep watching, question
in garo, does he fight a different person each episode, or does at some point he fight or try to get to this one person for the rest of the series
yea, they just mentioned that he has to kill her no matter what at the end if he doesnt want to end up like his father, so, im looking forward to hearing what thats all about
ive seen enough anime and dramas to have a pretty good idea about what happened tho
