Don't get me wrong, Hunter x Hunter 2011 is fantastic. I started off watching the newer series, but when I found out there was an older Hunter x Hunter series, I just had to check it out. Overall, it seems like the older one was better, up to the end of the Yorknew arc at least. Greed Island was done much better in the newer one.

The music was much better, the art-style was way more detailed, and the storyline was almost exactly the same as the newer series. I've heard people say the older series was super inaccurate, but it didn't seem inaccurate to me at all. Sure there were a few differences here and there, but I didn't notice anything significant. Oh, and the older series had Kite at the beginning?

I have already stated my opinion on that matter and I agree with you.

"For me it is better than the 2011 version at least until the Greed Island arc after that 2011 is better imho. Well maybe better is not the right word, I just personally prefer the execution of the original anime. The atmospheric music and dark animation used in 1999 version create an atmosphere and a feeling of a more mature and deep anime which suits better for this show. Some details are done differently in the old version, other details are completely left out in the new one. This has as an effect different character characterizations which seem more deep and more fitting for some of them plus the fillers of the 1999 version are really well written and enhance most of the characters of this show. My preference is not based only on nostalgia and you can deduce that by yourself if you have watched the 2011 version try the 1st episode of 1999 and see for yourself ( how the music and animation create a more dramatic and mature feel). That being said I think 2011 is incredibly well done and its a safer recommendation for new watchers of this series."

Heavens arena arc and GI arc I think is better in 2011 though. I just really like how in the 99 the relationship between him and his aunt Mito is portrayed (we can see how much he values her and their relationship seems deeper. After Hisoka hits Gon in the hunter exam arc the only thoughts Gon had while agonizing was of his aunt Mito... that was really beautiful)

That's a fact, why would you state it as a question?

BTW I agree with everything you stated

I just found it perplexing is all. Why wouldn't the newer show have Kite at the beginning as well?

I feel the exact opposite. The newer series has much better music (except Gon no Tema from the first one. I really liked that theme), and handles the storyline in a much better way.

Who cares? If the only competition that could conpare to a series is its older self, why not just watch either?

I think the 2011 version is a better adaptation overall but the 1999 version does do a few things better, in particular a certain filler episode that fleshes out Leorio's character more. In the 2011 version, it does feel like he's being thrown off to the side after the Hunter Exam despite being one of the main characters (the manga does this too, but has given us a little detail about his strengths such as with the testing gates at the Zoldyck mansion).

I didn't say pick one or the other, it's not a competition. They're both great.

I feel like there's this aggressive stigma whenever someone brings up both series in the same conversation.

Well it's pointless to argue, both will lead to the same point so whichever or both you watch is not that important

No, it's not only you. i think the old show is better too. better art, better atmosphere, good fillers (pakunoda's death for example, it was even better than the manga) -except for heaven arena- SO MUCH better soundtracks.
2011 show is amazing too ,but the 1999 show one is obviously better. it's even better than the manga.

1999 was also a tad more consistent in terms of animation (which is mostly overlooked due to how most of the artwork had been portayed.)
But, I'm guessing that has to do with the length of either series.

Idk even though I think the remake is better, I remember liking the original more. Idk if it's because I had to watch a show weekly that I had already marathoned a couple of times 5+ years ago. I might rewatch the original one of these days to see if my feelings change.

I haven't actually watched the entire 1999 series (but I might someday) so I can't say. However, based on the parts of it I have seen, I think the 2011 version is the better adaptation in the sense that it captures the spirit of the series better. I was impressed by how well-crafted the bits I watched of the 1999 version were, but overall they were rather monotonous; generally dark and serious. The thing is, though, that the dark and serious aspect of HxH is only one side of it. The series is built on a dichotomy of light and darkness existing simultaneously, and IMO the madhouse version captures that essence better, starting out extremely light-hearted and kiddy while hinting at the darker aspects of the world's universe's, before slowly transitioning into that hidden darkness by the time the Chimera Ant arc rolled around.

Before I get started I just want to say that this is all a matter of preference (unless of course you watch primarily for objective judgement) also just want to say that I watched the 2011 version first followed by the 1999 version, so no nostalgia for me.

Now then, the only thing I liked about the 1999 version over the 2011 was how it actually portrayed Kite in the first episode, it's an obvious mistake in the 2011 version to leave it out that's for sure

For why I prefer the 2011 version overall would be because of absolutely everything else really. One of my favorite aspects about this show is the chemistry between Gon and Killua, and the rich and vibrant animation style really compliments the lightheartedness of that which I find much more appealing.

The music in the 1999 version does certainly fit pretty well with most if not every situation, however much of the music is somewhat generic and just overall forgettable (imho) but the music goes well with the dark animation style, with the 2011 version though many if not all the songs are overused the distinctive feature I find to be stronger is with how some songs excel at delivering their purpose and go beyond by increasing the state of my emotions at whichever given point (IE during the confrontation between the Zoldycks and Chrollo the song "Hashire" set the mood followed by the song "Riot" to play during their fight), and with how well the 1999 versions music complimented the animation style, the music does the same in the 2011 version with it's animation.

Now this is probably irrelevant but ED1 of the 2011 version is my favorite ED of all time, one reason why the Hunter Exam is my favorite arc strangely enough. It just added so much satisfaction to my ears that it added more happiness to an already overly-happy mood.

Anyway that's my own opinion sorry if I may have offended anyone, nonetheless I think we can all agree that Hunter x Hunter is awesome :)
