Is there a reason as to why the majority of the characters and setting are scandinavian (germanic tribes)? Is there something about the plot that I missed or just plain random?
And about Levi, if we ignore his name factor, what nationality do you still think he is? Please discuss. Thanks.

Somehow Isayama isn't going to reveal who or what basis he did base his characters on. He got into trouble the last time he disclosed that kind of information and he went through hell with the backlash.
"Manga readers are annoying, all they do is complain or spoil the anime we discuss in an anime forum.
They should really do their whining at manga forums.

Survivors are situated in some Germanic setting? I dunno. Jotuns (AKA giants) are a big part of Norse mythology if that tells you anything.

That could just be Levi applying some first aid onto his wrists, but you never know eh? People don't seem to notice anything too strange about Levi, contrary to Mikasa (when Jean first talked to her, he said something about how different she looked).

True, true. Today, levi's side story arc just came out. The one run in ARIA. I'm watching closely at Levi's left hand but the author seems to 'hide' it. I will update more if I do find anything from this gaiden.

I know how you feel about writing out pages analysing things in this manga/anime.

I'm still not convinced Levi's Asian though, I mean his blue eyes are pretty damming evidence that he isn't, I've never seen an Asian with blue eyes before. He has to be at least half European.

Mikasa's eyes only have a blue tiny to them in that one scene, in all others they are black, Levi's eyes are always blue, it's just hard to see most of the time.

So in a few points i agree with you!
So i'm 99,9% sure that Eren is German, and he is not Jager but Yeager.
Annie is confusing because Annie=Russian and Leonhart=don't even know...maybe English?
Sasha same thing,Sasha=Russia, but her surname is Braus and it sounds like german...
About Armin he looks like English,Mikasa is half Japanese half???Acker came from German or Old English, meaning "field", and is also related to the word "acre". Therefore, Ackermann means "fieldman". Ackerman is also a common Ashkenazi Jewish surname.
So we can assume that Mikasa can be Japanese and German or English or ewen Jewish?...O.o (i hope not,not racist) ahah
I won't say anything about the obvius nationality of some characters (Bertolt....)
Since i'm a manga reader,it's hard to say something about their nationalities..

Well, Eren is a name in Turkey that means "holy", and with the fact that he has a more tanned complexion, I think Eren might turkish german.

"holy" is a very vague way to put it. Eren or ermiş is the person who had achieved his mystical or religious objective. "Er" means to arrive or to achieve and "eren" means "the one who achieves".

Trying to work out meanings out of the character names are useless, they have no significance.

Isayama Hajime should be awarded The Manga with The Highest Inconsistencies of Characters' Appearances.
He keeps performing multiple plastic surgeries on those Shingeki No Kyojin characters in a SINGLE chapter.
Yes, I've read up to the latest chapter of Shingeki No Kyojin manga.
Forced myself to read through the kidsketching chapters after the anime's ended. At least from now on, I only have to go through the hell once a month.
Patiently awaiting SNK TV/movie/OVA anime-sequel.

Makes perfect sense. How didn't I see that before? Mediterraneans are always pissed off too, so Eren most likely came from there. They get pissed off over the smallest things, and all they're good at is being angry while being all talk.

Anoo, ... moshi moshu?

The only thing about Erenq which would be difficult to nail in a real person, is the shape of his eyes - too cat-like and too big for a male, even for his 15s. Otherwise, I am pretty certain that dark brown hair, green eyes, and tanned complexion can be found anywhere across Europe, especially in the European part of the Mediterranean region, but not necessary in Turkey. I'd rather say they are rare there and the facial structure is even less typical.

About the names - Levi and Eren share some connotations as 'holy' and 'warriors', Mikasa is named after a war-ship. Instead of direct analysis of the names, the characters should have a concept behind them, relevant to the story. Maybe this is a better clue. Discuss, as is popular to say. :D

Anime eyes? Then again, this series tries to look more realistic with people.

I've seen people with such eyes, believe me. It's not unusual to say the very least. But we do get a lot of Mediterranean folks in Australia.

"holy" is a very vague way to put it. Eren or ermiş is the person who had achieved his mystical or religious objective. "Er" means to arrive or to achieve and "eren" means "the one who achieves".

Trying to work out meanings out of the character names are useless, they have no significance.

I know that but it's not relevant.
"Holy" fits better.
And no, it isn't useless ;)

I'm a Turk so trust me+ I live in Germany.

I am Turkish too but I don't see how you being a Turkish means the meaning of Eren's name has any significance?

I wanted to say: "I know it"

Eren has more meanings than holy.

It also means ´perfected or finished´ and "the brave HERO".

Well you've certainly put a lot of thought into this...I don't know if normal nationalities really apply in SnK considering it's fictional and I don't know if the world in SnK is the same as the real world, but if I really thought about it:
I always thought that Levi would be Asian, maybe Chinese. I thought Ymir would be middle-eastern or maybe Indian, and Marco struck me as being Italian. Erwin seems to be from England or maybe even America. I reckon Sasha is Russian and maybe Annie is too, but she could also maybe be German or even English? Armin I think is Scandinavian. A lot of the characters seem to be European and the setting itself seems to be very European-influenced...but as I said before, this is all fictional so it all means nothing really.
Anyway, that's as much as I've thought about it.

Look back to WWII...
Deconstruction ≠ Darker & Edgier
Trope ≠ Cliché (Face it, nothing is completely original. Can't make something from nothing so to say.).
Fanservice ≠ Ecchi (Though ecchi can please the fans!)
Popular ≠ Sucks... maybe
Seinen = K-ON! Shounen, Shoujo, Seinen and Josei are demographics.
Anime/Manga = Japanese Cartoons! Deal with it.
