As the title suggests, I am looking for something that has a lone wolf character. Preferably male, but female is ok. A lone wolf would be a main character that is generally alone or with few companions. A character like that would not depend on others to get the job done, and is usually not sedentary (doesn't stay at the same place).

Examples of such characters would be Ginko from Mushishi, Nanashi from Sword of the Stranger (actually, any ronin) and Kintaro from Golden Boy,

There are also many other characters that could fit the description, like Spike from Cowboy Bebop , Vash from Trigun, Harima from School Rumble, even Takemoto from Honey and Clover. They don't fit the description as precisely, but are also what I am looking for.

Preferably, I would like the anime to be something I am not likely to have heard about. Here is my complete list.

The description you gave fits perfectly for the main character of Gun X Sword. Believe me it's exactly like the character you are looking for.

Thank You! Added Gun X Sword to Plan to Watch list (God knows when I'll actually watch it).
Berserk - yes, Guts is exactly the lone wolf type; unfortunately, I've both seen the anime and read the manga.

I see you have Kaiji and King of Bandits Jing in your Plan to Watch list. The former does not really fits your description, but still, it's about a lonely wolf, who has to overcome his hardships "alone!"
Also you might try Casshern Sins. A robot/human/droid or w/e wandering in the deserted world. It has a post-apocalyptic atmosphere.

Thank you all for your replies. I've seen Kino's Journey and Gungrave. Kaiji, King of Bandit Jing and Mononoke I will watch, sooner or later. Casshern Sins - I guess you mean the new one and not the one from the seventies; I might give it a try, though I never really liked the mecha genre.
