I have alwyas wonder why?
well cept for nanoha/mamotte lolipop but for some series it takes forever to bring out a thinpack version I was sure they might put out air, kanon 2006 and shuffle thinpack i think it been awhile since they brought it out.
I'm more of a thinpack collector but waiting 2 yrs is long enough T_T

Because they make 2-3x more selling huge box sets, and 5-6x more selling DVDs individually.

They hate me and my nice, uncluttered living room. Well, the extra money they can make too.

It's not greed if you are a commercial business - the entire point of your existance is to make money. When people spend more money on DVDs, the companies make more money, and more money is invested to make more anime. Sounds like a win situation for fans.

So price gouging isn't greed? Monopolies aren't greed?

Yeah, that's what I'm getting at. For instance, Universal splitting up seasons 2 and 4 of Battlestar Galactica and charging full price for each half-season or a company releasing an anime series as Blu-Ray only and charging $100+ for it.

thinpack collection is the whole series :3 or part 1 of the series depends how they sell it like 13 eps or all of them like 24-26

Ah that makes sense, cuz I saw a welcome to the NHK thinpack (Which I want btw) and there was 12 eps in one and 12 on the other.

How I see it, thinpacks come out later because the companies have got to make their money back. If it's dub and sub then they not only have to pay for the licenses and whatnot but also pay the people that make the sub and the people that make the dub. So they try to make as much money as possible on that. When they are scrapping for money they will then pick up the people on the cheaper thinpacks to try to cut as much of the expense as possible. So unless things were already done (by Geneon for Nanoha etc) or there are no dubs (like Maria-sama ga miteru) I doubt if you'll see a fast thinpack.

The companies have to make a profit in order to make get the licenses so they have to use anything they can. (It doesn't help that it is too easy to not buy things retail price but that's the double edge sword companies have to face.)

If we got 80% or higher let me know! :)

Most anime DVD companies see thinpaks as a way to release the cheapest collection. Blame ADV -- they started the thinpaks = cheap, bare-bones re-release trend. So of course a company will wait to release thinpaks -- they want to put out the more costly singles and collections first! If a series gets multiple releases, of course the one that will result in the least profit for the company will come out last.

Make no mistake, though, some companies release series on thinpaks as a series' first and/or only release, although those generally tend to be things they don't want to spend a lot of money on and thus aren't charging much. And not all cheap collections are thinpaks; many cheap releases are in the form of digipaks, bricks, or repriced singles!

oh, these little earthquakes
