| Okay, a mathematical brain teaser this time... x and y are two positive integers (that is, a number above 0, with no decimals). IF x^2+(x*y)+x+y equals 143, what does x-y equal? |
| i saw the math and wanted to cry, and then i thought about it The answer is 7 x^2 +(xy)+x+y = 143 factor out the x in the first two terms to get x(x+y)+(x+y)=143 factor out an x+y from the two terms to get (x+1)(x+y)=143 the only factorization for 143 (besides 1*143) is 11*13 therefore x+1=11 => x =10 x+y=13 => y = 3 x-y=7 |

| lol this thread has been dead for a week now... *casts Life2* Relatively easy riddle: Two men go into coal mine to mine coal (go figure). At the end of the day, one man comes out sparkling clean and the other man comes out completely covered in soot and stuff. When they get to their respective homes, the clean man thoroughly cleans himself off before eating dinner while the dirty man simply sits at the table without washing himself off. What happened? |
