This is for those otakus who have been to Japan or are currently living here to share their experiences or pretty much anything that comes to mind about their life in Japan...and perhaps set up gaijin otaku meets etc in Japan...

I'm currently living in Osaka and god do I love it here...:D

The convenience stores... Oh are they so good.

The cost of living is much cheaper than where I live as well. I enjoyed strolling around in Akihabara as well as Hiroshima and Kyoto. The anime convention at Tokyo Big Sight was really cool as well.

I plan to be back in Japan again in a few days for the next convention.

Where the heck did you live? The cost of living in Japan is astronomical.
Japan was an okay experience. There are so many fucktards in the stations, wasn't good because this was an every day routine for students.
And don't label yourself as an otaku.

I would think the cost would astronomical now only because of last year's earthquake? I don't know. I do think the idea of living in Japan for a while is interesting.

I just wanted to chime in and say that self-proclaimed "otakus" are probably blinded by the glorified parts of Japan highlighted by Anime. Once the initial excitement wears out, Japan is probably no more exciting than living any where else.

Oh my gosh I just got through watching vids like that on YouTube. When I first thought of Japan I thought it'd be like, super easy to relate to people and fit in but it seems a little more difficult than that--being a foreigner and all, lol.

So what is life like there? Do you get a lot of stares? Any rudeness? Are you originally from North America? If so, do they have American food in the "foreign" isle/section? Lol. ^_^
I haven't found a really good anime in a really long time. :(

Funny I practically lost all motivation to watch anime ever since I moved here 3 1/2 years ago. Most of the anime I tend to watch, I will watch in theaters. I spend most of my time outside though I still read plenty of manga.

I currently live in Saitama, but will be moving to Utsunomiya at the end of this month for my new job. I have lived in Ibaraki, Kagawa, Ehime, Hiroshima, and Niigata as well. Tokyo and the surrounding area is expensive, but Hiroshima and Shikoku (and I also believe Kyuushuu) is pretty cheap in comparison.

Well, most of the jobs and the foreign population is concentrated in Tokyo. But if you apply for the JET program upon university graduation, they will put you in the sticks.

But the longer you here and make more connections, the more opportunities you have to advance. Usually, people who come here to work as an English teacher stay one to two years.

I'm not an expert, but what you said is true, but only in the city life. If you live outside the city it's much better. But it's the same for pretty much all countries XD Personally I'd like to live in Japan outside the city. But the worst problem is that it is harder to get a job and somewhere to live outside cities >_>

No I don't label myself as an otaku but I just wanted to share my experiences.

Makes we wonder how "in-depth" you need to be in order to become an "otaku" in the first place though.

7+ years of living in Japan now. Now Japan is just like anywhere else home is. There's good and bad, but in the end it's a place to live and work. The novelty is looooong since passed and it's just my regular life now, but that's the best part. Despite maybe sounding dismissive about it I do generally love it here.

Man honestly anime hasn't really been that relevant to me for years now. After moving here I started watching less and less and now I watch almost nothing new and the anime culture I know about I learn from just picking it up in day to day life.

The Japanese and Foreign idea of an otaku is totally different. What are labels anyway.if someone wants to call oneself an otaku so be it...
anyway that aside Japan is a great place to live but you have to dig deeper...when I first got here I was a little shocked as well.I mean being on the other side of the world you'd think from all the anime you watch everyday that Japan is your ideal world, your heaven so to speak but its not.Its not.

Its just another country on the planet with its own interesting culture. Its a love hate relationship with Japan. You'd hear a lot of gaijin staying here say that...But if you are here and really think about it you'd find that its a great place to live your life.I came here expecting Japan and the Japanese to be something straight out of an anime show...And at first there were a lot of things I hated about Japan cos I was disappointed at how different it really is but having spent two years here now...I am starting to see the upside of things and I'm really starting to like it here. You do get stares and there is some mild racism and there are people who hang out with you just cos you're a foreigner and they have a lot of stereotypes associated with the country you're from but I've made some good friends here and more than anything else I love the culture and being someone studying architecture I'm starting to look at Japan not with my anime goggles but a whole different set of em and I'm glad to say that I like it here.I love my life here, the people, the culture, the architecture, the efficiency of pretty much how everything around me is run and the customer service is the best...and oh yeah the most important part it takes year and years to understand the japanese...I'm not even half way there...learning the language is very important and I'm not talking about simple conversations but really learning the language helps...well have loads to share but for now thats about it...off to do some laundry :D

Well, I move and travel around the country a lot, so the novelty is always fresh to me.

Wouldn't say a large Japanese audience uses the site b/c all the people in the thread seem to be migrants.

Probably doesn't count, but I lived in South Korea for 2 Years and visited Japan often.

I would love to live in Korea again! Japan not so much.

The whole traditional/spiritual aspect of living in Japan makes it appealing. For me, at least.
I know not to expect too much out of it.

But Korea has North Korea and, as we all know, they could end the world as we know it at any second.

NK has something like 8000 artillery battery pointing at Seoul at any given moment iirc. But its unlikely they'll start anything soon since they'll get their butts whooped with fire and sword by everyone if they try it.

@mikozee 11 years old late, but "Japan is probably no more exciting than living any where else." ONLY if you leave it this way, if you don't work for anime experience in there

And that dosent imply in japan only, but anywhere else, if you don't work for exciting life in any country, you won't get it

Why does it matter where you live? You will be a slave to the Illuminati/capitalism, no matter where you live. You will not survive NTHE, no matter where you live; no matter who you are. When human extinction inevitably arrives, you ain't safe anywhere on this planet. Definitely not in Japan.
