I'm looking for anime with a certain type of male protagonist (or antagonist as long as he appears throughout the series or movie). He should have something dark and mysterious about him. I don't really care whether he's ultimately evil or not but I have a thing for bad guys who are honourable in some way or when there's room for doubt whether they are actually as evil as they may seem.^^ I prefer black hair or at least a darker colour. Blond is a no no (white's okay though)!! A troubled past or otherwise intriguing backstory that has made him who he is today is always a big plus! He can have supernatural abilities or not, I'm fine either way. Some of my favourite male characters are Alucard from Hellsing, Xelloss from Slayers and Sebastian from Kuroshitsuji. Age rating of the anime is not my top priority but the older the better!^^

If said guy would also be involved in some sort of romance with a female character, that'd be great!^^ Well, I guess that's all. I've been searching for a while now and would be really grateful for a few suggestions (plz, also let me know even if a character doesn't have all the traits I mentioned, I'll be glad to check it out anyway)! :)

Cowboy Bebop
Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha
Ergo Proxy
the Kara no Kyoukai movies - female lead, but very dark, very mysterious.

Can't really think of many antihero characters at the moment, at least not from ones from any good anime. It sounds like you want to watch the movie Pitch Black though.

Gungrave

Troubled past, dark haired MC, impossible romance.
I am 99% sure if you like Alucard, you will like Brandon Heat too.
In fact take a look

while great action series, it features multitude of badass characters. Plus its new series, and no romance in it ( except in traces). Both Hellsing and Slayers are older shows.

I got the idea that the OP is looking for 1 badass character, black haired, troubled past, with some romance in series.

Fate/zero is a good show, but not a perfect match for this request imo.

Did you read the the whole post?
aside from code geass, the other two aren't really the type that the OP wants to see.

I would say Afro Samurai, Darker than black and as some mentioned Cowboy Bebob

why not? Durarara and Magi have dark male antagonist (Izaya and Judal), altough I dont really know if the one in Magi will appear for the whole time

I disagree. The only thing Fate/Zero doesn't have going for it is that it is, like you said, newer, but OP said age is not his/her top priority.

Emiya Kiritsugu, the protagonist of Fate/Zero:
Black hair. Check.
Involved with some sort of romance. Check, his wife Irisviel.
Honourable in some way. Check, his sense of justice.
Dark and mysterious. Check.
Troubled past. Check, check, and triple check.

except the fact that there are so many characters, and the pace of the show is distributed in a way they all receive a lot of screen time and story.

I think OP was asking more for a one man show.

What's wrong with the fact that there are many characters? OP may even take a liking to some of the other main characters; for example, Kariya is quite a sympathetic character and has traits of an anti-hero that is ultimately trying to do "good." The more characters up OP's alley in an anime, the better. There is absolutely no indication of OP wanting a central main protagonist other than the anime examples that he/she gave that included her "favourite male characters." I'm not trying to attack your opinion, I merely don't understand why you're opposing F/Z as a completely valid option for OP to watch.

I dont oppose any of your opinion on the Fate/Zero. Its a good show.
I oppose it as a recommendation for the request OP has made, because it doesn't fit her request. Heck Gilgamesh gets so much screen time he could be an MC. And look at his blond ass

He's very cool btw ;)

And I do think she is more inclined for one man show or less characters from "looking for anime with dark male protagonist/antagonist" instead of "looking for anime with plethora of male characters with different hair colors".

But, I think its pointless for me to explain further since its up to OP to decide which of the recommendations in this thread fit more closely to what she is asking.

Thank you all so much for your numerous and quick suggestions! Some look really rather promising (like Gungrave, loving the screenshot)! :) I've added most of them to my Plan-to-watch-list and can't wait to check them out once I have the time! Oh, and to clear up any confusion: I'm not only looking for a one man show or so. There can be other protagonists too and any genre goes as well. I always enjoy trying new anime!

Thx to you all once again (and more suggestions are of course always welcome)! <3

(And I'm a girl btw! XD)
