I just finished the first vol. of the Death Note manga, and i rly liked it.
Then i found out there was also a Anime about it, and (to be honest) im more of an anime person.

Is it worth to stop reading after this volume and start watching the anime (i heard the story is almost the same) or should i keep reading the manga?
(or maybe both :S )

Well, I am a manga person myself so I'd read the entire thing by the time the anime started. They are basically the same, which is why I stopped watching the anime. Death Note, for me, doesn't have much re-watch value unless you give it some time... so since you prefer anime I would say just to watch it... I can't say how closely they stay the same past the first 6 episodes... but you're probably safe going with that. And if you really like it... then read the manga like 6 months later.

I think it's more fun to read the manga first, then watch the anime. You should both read it and watch it.

I started off watching the anime...but got annoyed with the release times, so I gave up and read the manga. I really, really, enjoyed the manga and dropped the anime. :)

I read the manga and didn't have the interest to watch the entire anime. the anime (from what I've seen) stays really faithful to the manga so you can watch/read either one and not miss out on anything.

and with this post my post count has increased, making me 1 post cooler than before

I started the series first, watched an episode or two and then decided to read the manga. I finished it in a weekend and really, really loved it.

The anime sort of ruined the manga for me - even though I loved it, after the anime turned out to be such crap I started to wonder if the manga was really just as bad and I hadn't noticed it or hadn't wanted to notice it.

I read the manga before watching the anime and the main things that kept me watching the death note anime was the brilliant voice actors, music, shiney effects and well tbh the general atmosphere.

But i prefered the ending from the manga to the one from the anime which seemed rushed/cut down to fit time slot.

Not much will change if you give up the manga since the anime follows it closely albeit some minor changes (as usual 'manga is better')

You will like the anime up to ep 7 I think and then you will probably think the rest of the eps where rushed. Read the manga when you start hating the anime and you will have a much more pleasant experience.

The story is essentially the same, just a couple of extra scenes thrown in for heavy-handed overtones. Reading the one is the same as watching the other.

No the anime is way more rushed
. Its enjoyable till that part then it just seems like its a totally different anime not worth watching.

I couldn't stand the anime after that, so I ended up reading the rest and putting the show on hold. I think allot of people feel the same way. The anime was lacking.

I repeat. "Reading the one is the same as watching the other."

You just summed up how most people feel about the second arc, animated and on paper.

How can you say watching is the same as reading? The manga is not rushed! When reading you actually feel like the story fits together, unlike the anime where it's like what the hell is all this other crap being added to the story and why isn't it being explained like the whole first half of the show? There's no problem with reading and watching together, but you will definitely get more out of the anime if you read the manga. There's definitely no way you can say they're the same.

How can I say such a thing? Easily.

Although I should begin by pointing out that I deliberately did not quote you on "Rushed," but rather the second half of your post "Then it just seems like its a totally different anime not worth watching"; the majority of people I've talked to seem feel that the second arc was not as well thought out as it's predecessor, and even those like myself, who actually enjoyed the second act, slowed in both my reading and interest considerably (particularly after vol. 9). Still, the story remains the same, even if presented slightly differently.

Oh yes, and I dislike the ending, which I do believe could have used a rewrite in both cases. Deal.

Well, I agree that I didn't like the outcome of the end... but I have to say that Lights reaction at the end was one of the most satisfying things about that choice in ending. I liked Light for the most part and while a lot of people were upset with the way he reacted I thought it was totally brilliant and so suited to how Light would react given that ending. He was such a megalomaniac that it was so perfect.

Oh no, Light's reaction is brilliant. That's not that part that irks me, I assure you. Rather, more the cause than the effect.

I started with the manga and was blown away! when I got to the tennis match in the manga. I switched to the TV series and dropped it, out of bordem, at the part where Light is in the cell w/ L watching him.

I also started with the anime, then switched to the manga. Either way, when you are done, i remember reading a really good 'fake' ending which is definately worth the read, It's easy enough to find.

is this it?

the first 2 pages are stupid but I like what happens once he gets to the shinigami world. it would be nice if this was put after the actual ending in the manga

the thing that made the anime so good was the director with his crazy effects and camera shots, the manga is really basic and therefor it is lacking

I planned on writing a detailed comparison about this a couple of months back when I was re-watching Death Note, but never got around to it. Nonetheless, I did make some notes. Mostly, it comes down to whichever medium you prefer. The anime and the manga follow roughly the same route, but they do one-up each other occasionally.

The anime sometimes does things for styles sake and loses a sense of context and coherency a couple of times. It was a really big and successful production though, and I feel the staff successfully brought the manga to life. It can be so cinematic and well acted sometimes that it really blows me away — I've seldom seen anime come close to the height of Death Note's quality. The score is another huge plus, and I also feel as though the anime does a better job in exploring the duality of Light's persona.

On the other hand, the manga has an interesting epilogue and some important inner monologue that is missing for some of the prominent characters in the anime. The endings differ slightly, but I don't think either is necessarily better than the other. The manga also has Takeshi Obata's God-tier artwork.

Honestly, I wouldn't hesitate to consume them both, but if you're more of an anime person then watch the anime. There is some original material in there (some I could do without and some I quite like), but I think it's among the most faithful manga to anime adaptations.

Well, I just realised this thread is over ten years old.

In what way is the manga basic? The artwork is very detailed, and for a hugely dialogue driven series, it is incredibly gripping. You highlight the camera work in the anime, but many scenes were adapted verbatim, angles and all. The anime is certainly high on the ol' aesthetic and is very cinematic and well directed, but let's not pretend the manga doesn't have any of the crazy expressions and moments of action and superb tension.
