Okay so I'm a newbie to Lolita, although I know most of the rules. I don't own anything that is Lolita just yet, but I'm desperately making my own clothes. If anyone has a preference could you tell me what are the best types of fabric to use for a lolita dress, skirt, or bonnet? I have sewing experience, I'm fairly good with my hand sewing and I even own a sewing machine. I only know a little about using the sewing machine though, so I may ask you a lot of questions when you reply.

Thanks for the help! :D

So I read up on it a little bit, and it turns out Cotton fabrics are best. Do any of you know about the pettycoats? Sorry I'm such a lost cause. ^_^;;

Yes, cotton is the best and is easy to find. I suggest using a sewing machine for your wearable items as much as possible so your clothes don't look cheap or tear apart easily. Also, be wary when you buy lace! Cheap lace will make you an 'ita-loli,' that is, it hurts to look at you.

As for petticoats, ehh...material for those are quite different. Google gave me this:

Many materials have been found useful in the making of petticoats. Pique, for instance, has been found almost shadow-proof—as are also sateen and satinet. These materials may be used to advantage in making petticoats for wear under light wash dresses. For the better petticoats, one may use taffeta, silk jersey or a heavy crepe.

I think buying a petticoat somewhere would be better if you're not an expert seamstress.

Although most people seem to like cotton, I honestly prefer linen for skirts. It does wrinkle easier, but usually it's just a nicer fabric all around and won't have to be lined like some thinner cottons. Of course, if you can find a nice, soft, heavyweight cotton, that's fine. Also, some petticoats are thick enough that a lining isn't necessary.
