No offense towards those who disagree, but while I enjoyed the series, I found the ending to be undesirably sad in a painful and very depressing way. I really don't mind sad scenes as long as it has a happy ending that fully counteracts the sadness. I try to avoid watching stuff that has a depressingly sad ending, but this one caught me off guard. After watching the preview, for some reason, I thought that he would be able to save her in the end, what a crushing disappointment... /sighs

FYI: another huge landmine is an anime series called "Tsukihime" (moon princess), really enjoyed it, but the ending left me very sad and painfully depressed... /sighs again

Did anyone else have a similar experience? ...or have a list of similar landmines to avoid?

You may want to check out the Episode 12 discussion.
I just now finished the series, so it's still all sinking in, and I'm going to need to watch it again before I fully understand it. However, while I don't feel the same way about sad endings (though to explain this would undoubtedly digress), the ending is actually happier than you might think depending on how you look at it.

His wish was to be able to watch over her without causing her pain; Yukito didn't have the power to save Misuzu from the curse and he knew it.

i loved air's ending. there are some series that are cliched in the romances, and air was NOT that. quite the opposite. I think the point of the anme was not to save Misuzu, but rather, to make her live while she was alive, and to make her know real love. She got that. Yes, the ending was incredibly sad, and i've never cried so much in my life, but it was perfectly appropriate.

I agree. However, due to the overwhelming sadness of the previous scenes, it's hard to see that bit as something "happy" for the two of them... I was so sad after watching this, it physically made me depressed and to this day, I get a tight sensation in my heart whenever I think about it... Yet, I think it's one of the better visual novel adaptations I've seen so far... and I want to watch more of this story. Me, masochist, much? :P

The sadness was good. I needed a good, sad ending. You never see those anymore. :/

Depressing end has no bearing on whether the story was good or not as far as I am concerned. Besides, Yukito DID save Misuzu. Explanation copied and edited from my comments in the Misuzu Club:

No matter what happens, Misuzu dies in the end. The point is freeing her soul, not her body, from the curse so she can live out a full life with Yukito.

After Yukito releases his power, he dies and reincarnates as Sora. The reason his past incarnations/ancestors have failed to save Kanna's soul is because they actively tried to prevent her from dying inevitably getting closer to her and making her suffer from the curse. When Yukito becomes Sora, he takes an observer's point of view and is unable to directly "help" Misuzu.

After the point that Yukito died, Sora is able to continue observing Misuzu as she falls deeper into the curse. His sacrifice ends up letting Misuzu become closer to Haruka, the same thing that Kanna wanted to do with her mother. Yukito's sacrifice allows Misuzu to break the curse but is unable to keep her from dying. However this ultimately allows Misuzu and Yukito to be reborn as the children playing on the beach except this time, Misuzu will not die prematurely from the curse as a result of their bond.

In other words, Misuzu/Kanna finally gets the happy life she truly deserves.

Forgive me for my brevity but it's been a while since I watched it.
