Had a lightning strike real close once, static blew the mouse, speakers and usb hub, along with a LAN card.
Although almost no one uses phone line for internet, I still use the modem for faxes though.

My goodness, I'll be shocked if you also used surge protector and this happened.

Japan's internet was slightly slower in the dial up age than the US and Europe.

Their 33.4k vs our 56k modems

A surge protector wouldn't have helped. Only the static from the lighting did that. If lightning decides to strike your house directly, and you dont have a good ground, no surge protector on earth (well consumer at least) will help you.

That's true but industrial versions do give moderate protection from static and a direct strike, but in that setting you still need backup generators in case lightning strikes more than once.

Surge protectors dont do anything in a storm, except protect you from changes in the electricity. (example: 110v shoots up to 220V) I've seen ton of surge protects fail to protect the important stuff. Also, surge protectors are one-shot only usually. SO they aren't good anymore once you have a real surge.

Which is why you still need a generator in a factory or in your garage because lightning can strike more than once.
